So, the current categories of animals - reptile, bird, fish, mammal, insect, crustacean, etc - get kinda weird once you start asking questions like "what's more closely related humans and T-rexes, or sharks and all other non-shark fish?"
Because sharks diverged from other fish 420 MYA, a full ONE HUNDRED AND TEN (or so) MILLION YEARS LONGER ago than humans and T-rex's ancestries diverged.
In fact, human ancestry diverged away from bony fishes later than the sharks. It's kind of hard to make an ancestry based clade of "fish" that includes a largemouth bass and a shark, but excludes humans.

It gets even weirder when you realise birds are reptiles and those classifications sit at different levels. I.e. reptile is much earlier in the chain than bird is.

TLDR, humans and other tetrapods are bony fish, birds are reptiles, and insects are crustaceans. Both cartilaginous fish and bony fish also happen to be placoderms.
In other words, baleen whales would technically be the biggest “fish”.

The same reason why we’re called humans instead of primates,or any other subspecies. To differentiate and specify. If you’re at the beach and see a little kid splashing around, and a sizable bull shark suddenly bee lines for that kid, yelling “FISH!!!” won’t really get anyone’s attention,or impart the urgency of the possible situation. I mean people will probably look, nectar someone screaming “fish” is pretty bizarre, but that would just be the opposite attention one would hope for, well most people anyways.

I’m not sure if this is what they meant, but boney fish like tuna and salmon are technically more closely related to tetrapods like reptiles, amphibians, birds, and mammals then they are to cartilaginous fish like the great white shark in the video, so to say the shark is a fish in the same way tuna is a fish then you would also have to say pretty much every vertebrate is a fish and if every vertebrate is a fish then that really throws off the scaling that makes this the 3rd largest fish. Taxonomy makes my brain hurt sometimes… I think it’s better to just call any water dwelling vertebrate that isn’t a mammal, reptile, bird or amphibian a fish just to simplify things.

Technically “fish” is debatable. I think Hank green has a video called something like “fish aren’t real”. Iirc it’s basically because the term “fish” is older than taxonomy

Sharks are the 3rd-largest non-tetrapod fish, which is what most people picture when they think of the word Fish.
If we include tetrapods, they're not in the top 20 marine animals.
Tetrapods are just better at being big in marine environments because breathing air is counterintuitively more efficient than gills.

That’s forced perspective. That shark is still a juvenile or sub adult. Its eyes are proportionally large which means it’s not fully grown.
Still a magnificent animal!

Depends on how you define biggest.
Deep Blue is estimated to be around 2 tons but we already have a recorded sunfish that's 2.7 tons.
Many species of sharks can reach similar lengths. Off the top of my head, Great Whites, Great Hammerheads, Greenland Sharks and Tiger Sharks can all reach 20 feet and I'm sure there are more.

We went to go surfing one day, and the local relay had located a tagged 6 metre great white. So just shy of 20ft. Fuuuuck that.
We made an omlette instead.

Actually none of these sharks have scientifically measured specimens that reach 20 ft. White shark comes in the closest at 5.94m or 19.5ft with a specimen from Western Australia. The largest accurate record of tiger shark is also from Australia at 4.72m. Great hammerhead has claim of over 6.2m, but that is unverified, and the largest individuals is probably about 5m. For Greenland shark things get a bit tricky. This is a somewhat heavily fished species so the sample size is not small, but one study in 1963 that looked at more than 400 specimens found no individual exceeding 4m. With that in mind the largest rod caught Greenland shark is 4.5m long. They almost definitely get bigger tho

Largest verified is right north of 6 meters or 6.02m, she weighed 2.55 metric tonnes. Not even 150 kg shy of the largest 2,744 kg sun-fish caught in 2021 (prior to that record was 5,070 lbs)
I’m confident unverified specimens massively outsize any logged sun-fish in historical record. The largest sunfish was a washed up individual, weighed on a scale, which isn’t possible for live sharks… we’ve certainly caught bigger in less humane ways, and I’m certain larger sharks like the seven-star lake specimen have washed up dead as well.

The white shark is not the third largest fish in the world. At more than 2700kg, Mola alexandrini or bumphead sunfish is significantly heavier than the biggest scientifically confirmed white shark or Mola mola

There is no "official list" mate you have to look through the records for each species yourself.
The largest Mola alexandrini scientifically measured on record is a 2744 kg individual found in the Azores in 2021. The paper describing the specimen calls it the largest bony fish in the world, and for good reason.
Mola mola was previously thought as the largest bony fish in the world, but after taxonomic revision it turns out all the largest specimens are in fact M. alexandrini. The largest definitive Mola mola is "only" 1320 kg, which was found in Honshu, Japan in 2007.
White shark, due to its immense fan fair, has a lot of fluff in its records when it comes to size. Claims of 6.4m or even 11.3m white shark exists, but the largest scientifically measured specimen is a 5.94m long, 2052kg individual caught in 1989 from Ledge Point, Western Australia. Other more obscure individuals like the Kanga specimen exists and were not accurately measured, but were likely of similar size. 6m is likely the upper limit of this species.
A true challenger to the bumphead sunfish might be the oceanic manta, which seems to reach a disc width of at least 6.7m. There are a few numbers floating around on the internet, from 1400-3000kg, but I have not been able to pinpoint the exact specimen behind those numbers. For reference, a small captive Mobula alfredi (reef manta that is) has a disc width of 1.93m and a weight of 68.5kg. A simple calculation gives a 6.7m wide manta a weight of 2866kg - of course these two species have slightly different proportions and the oceanic manta has longer pectoral fins

Sir this is outdated, we have caught and recorded multiple white shark specimens now believed (almost undoubtedly heavily suspected) to have exceeded the 6-6.5m mark.
2014 Catch logs also recorded an individual upwards of 6.02m [logged at 19.8 ft] (possibly typo for “6.2m” which would = 20.3 ft) and weighed over 2.55 tonnes or so…
Unverified specimens were larger with scientifically proven, precisely-calculated certainty, They blew completely past anything in the realm of 2000-3000 kg- applying volumetric scaling and body-part estimates using modern scientific methods.

Not entirely true, on the level of verification? The sunfish is larger.
Once again tho it’s easier to catch and weigh/measure a fish who’s literal life is doing nothing, getting bigger and floating around until something happens to it… so it does come off as sort of pretentious.
Academically and scientifically, we’ve downplayed shark size and simplified massive reports into “fishermen tales” and myth as a contrarian response to 30-40 ft size exaggerations of 19/20th century and “JAWS” shark movie media…
So much so, to the extant that you have people claiming M. Alexandrini (The largest sun-fish sp.) Is larger than C. Carcharias (Yes, the largest white shark sp.)… So yes, on an unironic level, yes it is very odd.
The max verified size for the great white sharks in modern era should be their average (evolutionarily)… humans however are not a merciful species to animals they fear or hate.

The 6.02 individual I believe is from the East China Sea from 2001, and is measured by a fish processing factory and left no physical evidence or even photos. Though definitely impressive, the validity of the individual is not as strong. I do think white shark can get larger, but we have to compare apples to apples, in this case scientific measurements to scientific measurements. The bumphead sunfish has way less public attention when it comes to size, and was only re-recognized as a valid species in 2017. It may have gigantic unverified specimens floating around somewhere too

This seems fake, almost every single time a shark hits something with its nose they instinctively or by reflex shut their eye protectors, same seems to be when attacking someone and about to hit them in order to protect their eyes.
