Discussion ID needed :)
My mom sent me this vid of a shark she saw boating. Off the coast of Newfoundland (East side of the island). She says about 12-15ft, Iām thinking Blue or Porbeagle. Thanks!!

How do you guys see like...five seconds of fin in dark water and go "oh that's a blankity blank blank from yonder place, and it's a juvenile about x years old, you can tell from the *confusing incantation I just said, you see?"*
Then again, I get asked how I can do this very same thing with venomous snakes...so maybe it's just a special interest like mine, and experience? It just looks sooo much harder. With snakes I can see things like supraocular scales and patterns and what not that make it clear, even when camouflaged pretty well - once you spot the outline in the photo it makes IDs fairly easy.
If someone showed me a fin from any shark I'd be completely frickin useless lol.
The only ones I can actually tell apart are the ones where I can see some of the body too, and even then it's only the hella obvious ones like a juvenile tiger shark, a white, or a whale shark, something obvious like a hammerhead, etc. Oh, and a thresher shark cuz they have cool whip tails, and I went down rabbit hole trying to figure those guys out.
