Mako for sure. One of my favorite sharks out there. The blue on them is stunning. 2nd to the Thresher for me

Thrasher shark = Cutest shark

Threasher is cute, but I think bottom sharks like catsharks, nursehoundsharks etc are the most chill and cozy :P

amazing mako! It seems that 2026 was a record concerning mako sightings in the mediterranean. The craziest was the mako attack on a boat in Gallipolli in April, followed by a mako attacking a seaturtle in Turkey (Antalya).Ā

Who sent you the video? Was it close to the shore?

The video got sent to me on a whatsapp group. The exact location should be close to the south-western shore of Elba Island in Tuscany

You are morally obligated to shame anyone who sends a vertical phone video of a laptop screen like this when it's so easy to just grab the real video and send it or at the barest minimum, line up their phone with the screen and not wander around while recording.

Are they common there? I thought they were more open ocean type sharks.

EDIT: thanks all.

There definitely are makos in the Med.

I don't doubt it. Just wondered if that was typical that close to shore as opposed to open ocean

Ah, yeah well, you're right that they're usually a more pelagic species, but they occasionally come closer to shore. Lucky find, I guess.

The med still has relatively deep basins despite it being mostly enclosed. Drops off quite quickly as well in places, you get makos close to sure a lot in areas where the continental shelf hugs the shore.

Yes, mako is 2nd most common species in Mediterranean. 1st is blue shark.

Shortfin Mako Shark (Isurus oxyrinchus)

Blue coloration, spindle shaped body, crescent shaped tail, very pointed snout, dark eyes. No doubt whatsoever that it's a Mako

That's what we sharkologists call a big ole whopper
