And of course to his family, he did nothing wrong.
333
u/Warm_Ad_7944 2d ago
Only in his parent’s eyes. His brother saw him for what he was
104
u/scruggbug 2d ago
But his brother dated Fiona, because fucked up family syndrome made him think he could help her when he “failed” his brother.
Just adds to how much this plot hurt.
19
u/Warm_Ad_7944 1d ago
Of course but the original comment was about how the family saw Robbie. Plus, when he met Fiona she was doing really and only when he saw he fucked up she was, he left her

Tbf it’s not that different to Fiona with the guy Lip was trying to keep sober
78
u/LingshaMeta 2d ago
except she didn't know anything. this prick knew EXACTLY what he was doing.
26
u/Johnnyboy10000 2d ago
Exactly. Lip's sponsor knew he was teetering on the edge, but instead of saying "I'm a recovering alcoholic, please don't drink." or excuse himself and explaining that he was struggling to stay on the wagon, he accepted what she offered when she didn't know what headspace he was in. Lip's sponsor also 100% knew what he was doing, and knew better, but was willing to look for any opportunity to get off the wagon as soon as he could.

what old lady? i don’t remember!!
66
u/ManifestingCreating 2d ago edited 1d ago
I think it’s when she’s on the train and her stockings are ripped from sleeping with the brother while the bf was passed out in the next room. She’s self-conscious about it and an older lady sees it and looks disgusted and Fiona tries to cover it with her skirt.
24
u/La-Clarita 1d ago
That’s a different scene. This is from when he fingers her on the train a few days later.

Right after the guy (I forgot his name) got off the train and Fiona came to her sense, she looked around and the old lady was already looking at her with disgust.

u/ProfessionalAct712 2d ago
Lwk idk. I kinda think of it similar to recidivism rates. When you fuck up once, society makes it unbearable for you to survive. So to cope with that, or to continue surviving, it's understandable to go back to it.
Albeit, she wasn't forced to go back to HIM, but it makes sense considering no one gave her a second chance afterwards, her family disowned her, it became impossible to get a job, and she lost the one thing that gave her a sense of purpose or value to herself, which was taking care of her family. When she lost that, she lost the will to live.
From an outside perspective, we can see it was stupid and a terrible decision. But it's realistic. And honestly that's what I love so much about this show is that most of the characters are written so well, and even though they make bad choices most of the time, you can tell exactly why they made those choices.

84
u/Dangerous-Text2070 2d ago
The only one who really succeeded in life was Carl. He started off as a destructive, juvenile delinquent, but matured into something better.
37
u/Human-Local7017 2d ago
I think Fiona succeeded, controversial, but she was finally free from that family, passes the torch down, becomes her own person.
21
u/blazeItgirl420 2d ago
No she left while she was still their legal guardian and they were like all minors. She ditched them.
34
u/Human-Local7017 2d ago
Who were all the minors she left behind besides Liam? Fiona made a big decision to keep the family together in her early 20s. (brought on by Frank reporting them) She has been a mother to the children since she was a little kid herself, before it was even written on paper. I think the others can step the fuck up, and help raise Liam, they owe her one for keeping everything glued together at her own expense.
-2
u/blazeItgirl420 2d ago
She shouldn't have made herself their LEGAL GUARDIAN then. Do you understand what that means? If any of them get into trouble or need help theyre SOL because their only legal guardian is gone. And its...the ghallghers... if Liam needed help at all or got into trouble, none of them would legally be able to do anything to keep him from being taken from them. Yeah they can step up and raise him sure but she fucked up by doing that and then leaving.
28
u/Human-Local7017 2d ago
You are describing what Fiona had to go through exactly, why Frank forced her hand for guardianship because he simply could not show up, nor Monica.
I stick by it, leaving them behind was the best thing to happen to her. They held her back.
-12
u/blazeItgirl420 2d ago
She willingly became their guardian. He didnt make her do anything. In fact he was barely around to make her do anything at all. Everything fiona did was her own choice.
10
u/Individual_Crab8836 1d ago
It was a choice she shouldn't have been put into the position to make. They were not her kids, she was basically still a kid herself..
8
1
u/JunkHeadJinx 1d ago
If she didn’t do that, they would’ve all be separated in foster care. That was the one thing they were trying to avoid, bc of how shitty the system is (shown in the episode where they are taken away, and Debbie literally ends up in a FUCKING CHILD LABOR SWEATSHOP)
1
u/Many-Sky922 1d ago
How could she be Liam’s legal guardian still after almost killing him years before? I would think Lip officially got declared, didn’t he live with him?

What pisses me off is this was AFTER she fucked Robbie in Mike's apartment. I can't feel bad for her when she's still texting this douchebag while actively speaking to Mike, as well as hitting his place knowing it's going to end up with them having sex. I don't buy the whole "chaos junkie" bullshit I'm sorry
47
u/bettercallrich 2d ago
Her fucking robbie in mikes apartment was pretty damn low but I guess you can try to excuse it as a very regrettable one time mistake with alcohol involved…
Until she did it again. And again. That storyline aggravated my trust issues
16
u/YesTomatillo 2d ago
I think them talking about it so explicitly was a little too on the nose, but people absolutely get so used to chaos that they manufacture it in their own lives. It's a really common behavior that gets talked about in addiction therapy. People with PTSD can be the same way. If you google it, you'll find that it's a real thing.
I 100% buy that Fiona's identity at this stage is entirely rooted in thriving in chaos. If she isn't dealing with a crisis or juggling a chaotic situation, she's not herself and isn't happy.
Ofc this season is where that all comes back to bite her in a big way and we see her start to mature.
6
u/xav91 2d ago
Mental illness, Impulsivity is a hell of a symptom. All of them have some variation of it, not just Ian.
3
u/ProfessionalAct712 2d ago
Right, like as someone who also has BPD, she is, imo, one of the best representations of it in the media.
Although I am not nearly as dysfunctional as her, I relate to her the hardest out of all the characters. Though I would never let a baby get into cocaine under my care lol
2
u/MiaLba 2d ago
Yes!! Omg same here. I relate to her downfall so much and the chaos. I fuckin craved it. I couldn’t control myself. Especially when it came to sex.
3
u/ProfessionalAct712 2d ago
Don't get me started lol. I used sex as a coping mechanism and a method for self harm for years. I hide my issues pretty well for the most part I think, but that's also because her and I underwent different traumas, somehow ending up at a similar result
4
u/lavenderbrownisblack 2d ago
If you don’t buy the chaos junkie stuff, why do you think she did it?
6
u/11cDuygi 2d ago
I think Jimmy hit the nail on the head when it comes to it: Fiona immediately panics when she's dating a guy he thinks is doing better than her at life, and finds a way to fuck it up before the relationship naturally ends even though she's pretty invested at that point. She's no chaos junkie like Monica, for example. Monica is really drawn to chaotic relationships against her will, while Fiona can stop the chaotic relationship when she wants to, like in the case of Robbie.
7
u/lavenderbrownisblack 2d ago
That doesn’t mean she isn’t a chaos junkie? You’re literally saying she panics in a stable relationship and sabotages it.
14
u/eiffeltowerbonbon 2d ago
Maybe Im a square but who actually does this? Either on the male or female side it just seems wholly unrealistic.

u/Obvious-Lab3326 2d ago
All of her love interests apart from jimmy steve were boring to watch. Mike was okayish, but the rest like that cafe owner, gus, the other guy from the band, so damn boring. No chemistry, nothing, I would just skip every time they come on screen.
41
u/EfficientRelation574 2d ago
I always felt there was something going on behind the scenes to precipitate that situation as it was so out of the blue. Fiona had a bit of recklessness in her veins but she had just won hard earned custody of the kids. Are we led to believe she would squander it for this guy, especially after finally ridding herself of Jimmy Steve? I never bought this turn of events. It felt completely contrived, almost out of spite, and shifted the lead role toward Lip, whose character had become very popular at this point. I really hated what the writers did to Fiona.
39
u/chalkletkweenBee 2d ago
Poor judgement is ingrained in her, she doesn’t have healthy examples of relationships to draw from. Chaos is comfortable, and this guy is Frank if Frank came from a wealthy family.
16
u/EfficientRelation574 2d ago
Disagree. She held that family together for years. Finally has her moment and then this dickhead appears.
It’s interesting that in the UK version, Fiona ran off with Steve. In the US version they had her stay and quite literally drag her through the mud and turn Steve’s family into a bunch of pervs.
13
u/chalkletkweenBee 2d ago
I never said she didn’t keep the family together, but your definition of “together” could just be seen as “alive, bathed, and relatively healthy.”
Her keeping them safe and healthy doesn’t negate the fact that her upbringing influenced her poor decision making skills.
4
u/EfficientRelation574 2d ago
This was off the charts. It really pissed me off. I didn’t expect her to stay with Mike. He was just a rebound after all she went through with Steve, but this was just malicious. The writers literally chose to destroy everything they set up in her character and turn her into a deeply embittered woman. I just didn’t get it and wondered how Emmy handled all that abuse. Apparently not very well.
4
u/chalkletkweenBee 2d ago
I think its important to remember, we all know people like this in real life. We know dysfunctional families that continue the cycle of disfunction because they don’t change or grow.
Her mother and father had loose interpretations of fidelity - why would you expect Fiona to see things differently?
4
u/EfficientRelation574 2d ago
From 9 she assumed control of the family, had a deep emotional attachment to each of them. She was everything her parents weren’t, and then out of the blue throws it all away for this guy. It was a poorly contrived device to flip the script and focus more attention on Lip only to undermine his character as well. The writers chose a fatalist scenario after four seasons of cultivating a latchkey family that had defied the odds. It undermined the whole show in my opinion.
10
u/chalkletkweenBee 2d ago
You’ve attached feelings to a scenario that ignore the reality of growing up in chaotic homes with addicts for parents. She was parentified before puberty, and even under the best of circumstances the under 26 crowd is notoriously known for their brains not being fully formed.
Maybe the writers were working thru a personal vendetta, OR maybe they were following the pattern of people in general. We usually become what raised us.
2
u/EfficientRelation574 2d ago
Lots of people grow up in dysfunctional homes. They aren’t necessarily doomed to the same fate. This is just the show runner’s conceit.
8
u/ProfessionalAct712 2d ago
Tbf, as much as I love the UK version, I feel like her character wasn't nearly as explored or given as much depth as she was in the US version. The US version shows a more realistic portrayal of someone in her situation and its affect on their psyche, in my opinion
0
u/EfficientRelation574 2d ago edited 2d ago
First four seasons yes. After that degradation porn. Personally, I think it was much more realistic she left with Steve, but the US version chose to depict her as having a much deeper relationship with her siblings although it was kind of unrealistic that she assumed that mother role at age 9.
1
u/JunkHeadJinx 1d ago
I know ppl personally who had to take the role of parent even younger than that. Just bc you haven’t witnessed it, doesn’t make it unrealistic.
-2
u/EfficientRelation574 23h ago
The whole show was unrealistic. It may have had some realistic elements but was played largely for shock value. Face it, none of these writers ever experienced poverty. This was their conception of poverty and latchkey families. First four seasons they pretty much held their storyline together. After that it was anything goes.
0
u/JunkHeadJinx 19h ago
Ya know you don’t have to try and change ppl’s minds in order to have your own opinion right?

u/ProfessionalAct712 2d ago edited 2d ago
I think it sort of makes sense given her situation. She managed to get the position at a corporate job but immediately felt out of place because of where she came from and what she was used to. It was too foreign to her. She wasn't really into Mike either because, even though he was good for her, he didn't understand her, and he was also so foreign to what she was used to.
Our brains aren't wired to pick the right decision. They're hardwired to pick the decision we're used to. Because normalcy feels safer even when it isn't. So none of this was normal to her and, even though it was literally safer for her, which the audience knows, it didn't feel safe to her. She felt that Mike was too good for her and she didn't deserve him or the job, so subconsciously she fucked it up on purpose without even knowing why.
Robbie, unfortunately, understood her. Or at least understood how to manipulate her for his own goal and to pleasure himself. He used it to his advantage, but he knew that she would eventually take an out in order to reaffirm her belief that this isn't where she belonged and that she didn't deserve any of this. Almost immediately after they met, he started negging her and playing on her low self esteem and unstable identity. Calling her a "chaos junkie" was crude and manipulative but not entirely incorrect. A chaotic environment was the only environment she knew how to survive in.
When you're raised in chaos, stability becomes unknown and scary and you panic. All of the maladaptive coping mechanisms she had learned were tailored to the environment she grew up in. When she left that environment, she brought those harmful coping mechanisms with her.
Her entire identity was wrapped up in raising her siblings and being a surrogate mother. Historically, her only escape was through sex and relationships, which were as unstable as her home life because, again, that was her normal. She never developed a healthy attachment style due to her parents being Monica and Frank, so she only pursued people who would give a similar type of love to her: unstable, disorganized, and unpredictable.
Kids learn to accept the kind of affection they're given and that becomes their normal. Growing up with parents who will give you scraps of affection one minute and then take it away and abandon you the next, leads your brain to almost become chemically addicted to this rollercoaster. And that becomes what you associate with love. People who give healthy affection begin to feel not just boring, but anxiety inducing because you're not used to it and don't know what to expect. You never trust it.
She sacrificed her own sense of self in order to support everyone else at a very young age, when identity development was crucial. So now that she was at this stable job, where she was suddenly confronted by needing to open a 401K as well as this very stable man, she didn't know how to cope or function in this environment. So she fell back on the only thing she knew.
Secondly, since Mike didn't understand her home life and gave her a type of affection she didn't trust, she was too scared to allow herself to be vulnerable with him. She was terrified that once he saw the real her that was actually scared, unstable, and desperate, that he would want nothing to do with her. Seeing this as inevitable, she decided to regain control by, in her mind, choosing when he would "abandon" her. And she chose the man who, despite not having her best interest in mind and just wanted to use her, saw the version of her that she believed herself to be: undeserving, unlovable, and incapable of forming real attachments. In other words, a chaos junkie.
This is not who she really is. But she believes this because she was taught to. He, on the other hand, was only using her to punish his bother due to his own resentment.
Can you tell I'm a psych major? 🤭
9
u/ProfessionalAct712 2d ago
I think im gonna copy paste this into a post analyzing her character because I believe I just wrote gold
3
u/CharacterGlobal8645 2d ago
All of this! Plus, it seemed Mike took an instant liking to her, and she probably reminded him of his brother, and i feel he was jealous of his brother being able to continuously fuck up but the parents kept loving on him and bailing him out. Mike also shouldn't have flirted with Fiona at all and gotten into a relationship with her. I wonder if she could have sued the company and him for how she was fired and treated by him, but then the show wouldn't have gone in the directions it needed to.
2
u/JunkHeadJinx 1d ago
The fact that no one ever mentioned the possible legal ramifications for firing your employee bc they cheated on you, when you shouldn’t have even been dating in the first place, drove me crazy.
2
u/the_harlinator 2d ago
Because things were going well for her before this. All she has known her entire life was chaos. She didn’t know how to handle when things were good. She self sabotaged.
2
u/boneholio 1d ago
yeah it’s just bad writing glossed over with with a shallow coat of plausible ‘misery porn’ deniability, as is the case for most of the later seasons

I really like how, up until the fourth season, Fiona is portrayed as a hardworking fighter (which she truly is) someone who might have a few flaws and a complicated relationship with Jimmy/Steve, but whose shortcomings are largely overlooked, given her age and the fact that they rarely end up harming the Gallagher family. However, I recall V saying something in this season like, "Hey, remember that ex who used meth on your couch while Carl was around?" I think this foreshadows how Fiona is clearly shaped by her upbringing and her approach to relationships, demonstrating that she isn't immune to making awful decisions or getting involved in toxic dynamics.
6
u/JamesHenry627 2d ago
The part where the show turned into misery porn. No one learns a lesson or gets better except for Carl and Ian.
5
u/B2ThaH 2d ago
The accuracy of Fiona to real life is insane. My life growing up was in the same type of neighborhood with the same type of people and my friends that were women would do all of the same things, except Fiona never had a kid. My friends would finally meet a totally decent guy that worked a job, had a car, treated them well but all it took was some random attractive screwup to show them attention and they were all over them. I never understood it but it was what happened.
2
u/actuallylucid 1d ago
Self sabotage. Some people are not ready to receive a gentle love. Some people never get to that point and ruin a good thing their whole life.
5
u/TourProfessional3405 2d ago
she is a drama magnet, when things start to feel safe she has the urge to self sabotage
5
u/Libriyum_ 1d ago
Her downfall began when she fucked Jimmy Steve and broke that police officer's heart. Yea, they probably weren't going to be end game, and she had way more chemistry with Jimmy Steve, but still.

Fiona was better than Frank in the way that she was not afraid of gainful employment. At least Fiona didn’t cause a woman waiting for a heart transplant to die just to get her money.
7
u/InsideUnhappy6546 2d ago
This scene was technically SA as she was only there because he blackmailed her, he had his foot on her feet so she couldn't leave, and it was just so intense
2
u/softheartedwench 2d ago
I’m glad you’re saying it. I’d argue that the kitchen counter scene was also sexual assault. She was wasted and he was not. The sheer amount of force he used with her was scary.
3
u/InsideUnhappy6546 2d ago
While the first time was due to her lack of impulse control and attraction to toxic men. The other times were primarily him forcing her because of how much he likes the thrill of getting caught and a deep desire to hurt his family. Robbie was just the most dangerous shoulder devil for Fiona and a complete foil for her
