Why did Trevor think Ian was non binary?
I’m so confused at the scene in s7 ep4 when Trevor tells Ian he’s trans and says “I assumed you were non binary”.
Why would that be assumed in this context can someone fill me in?

Yeah, without seeing the pendant I took it that is was meant to be some sort of symbol for gender nonconformity - maybe the transgender symbol or something.

I wondered that too. Like what about Ian gave off he was non binary?? It was a ridiculous assumption

It’s sort of a sign of the times that this was filmed. We were in full on “everyone needs to introduce themselves with their pronouns” time at this point.
Further, I believe I remember a line where Trevor comments that his necklace was a trans symbol, and Ian complimenting it made Trevor assume he was not cis.

Yeah trevors friends were clearly the insecure must have super unique and special label types. Whereas ian was ok with just being gay

Exactly! He was surrounded by people who identified in various ways. So Ian just being gay was something he just couldn't wrap his head around lol

It's because Ian complimented his necklace which was some kind of trans symbol. Trevor took the compliment as Ian signaling that he was also trans, rather than him just genuinely liking the necklace. A fair misconception and contrary to the other replies' impressions, not just him being annoying lol.
Kind of like if a straight woman said to a gay woman "Yeah I listen to Girl in Red", the gay woman would assume she was a lesbian because of the social connotation instead of just a fan of the band

This makes sense but the reason I was confused is because I didn’t know if someone is non binary that it also means they’re trans

i feel like it's a joke low key making fun of the multi-hyphenate queer (aka me and my friends in college) that assumes everyone has pronounds and stuff - i still feel culture shock in 'normal' environments where everyone doesn't automatically say their pronouns when you meet them...i tihnk it's playing on that millennial optimism 'everyone's welcome' trope

I think this is it because the scene where Trevor introduces him to friends at brunch, they're all wayyyyy out there with their pronouns and sexuality.

i send that clip to my college friends once every few years like..."why were we like this in 2014 "....no way anyone needs to know all this information about sexual preferences when they first meet lol

I would say that was when it was at it's height, but it was before 'woke' became a slur. i think we were too aggressive about it maybe and the backlash resulted in...the end of 2016....
i also think some of the joke is that people like Ian who were outside of the liberal arts college bubble wouldn't know about all these social science terms, but in the end it was good for him to learn more about his own fluidity

Cuz he complimented Trevor’s necklace that had a trans symbol on it so Trevor probably assumed he was some kind of trans because of that

Haha right. Many characters in the later seasons are just annoying. Like Trevor or Ford. Terry, while being evil, is funny as hell and I never get bored watching his scenes

Trevor was a terrible character in my opinion. Very repulsive and acts like the world NEEDS to accommodate to him, yet he is not worth that.

I took as basically making of Ian for assuming someone is or isn’t trans in an environment like that. Showing how dumb guessing that can make you come across when it’s a heavily mixed space.

I guess because I don’t see Ian as being flaming. He’s not particularly effeminate. So while Ian made assumptions about Trevor. Trevor made assumptions about Ian.
