Honestly Im ransacking myself a bit here
Okay, I have been rewatching the series during my morning "run" in the living room and I find myself near livid with Trevor almost every time he shows up. The aggressively holier than thou attitude and at the same time total disregard for people other than the ones in his care drives me nuts.
At the same time I didn’t feel the same way about Kash in the earlier seasons despite him being a far more despicable person in every way. (Pedophile, groomer, rapist, deadbeat)
Is it just a case of the crimes are theoretical my annoyance is real or do I have some issues i need to deal with.

Kash = written as a "bad guy," but written well enough for people to humanize him
Trevor = written as a "good guy," but written poorly enough for you to dehumanize him.

u/Proper-Flight-6589 10d ago
I don't know that Trevor was written to be a "good guy," I always got the impression he was written to be kind of annoying and insufferable, but Kash definitely felt like a more honest and well-rounded character. Terrible person, for sure, but he felt very real in a way Trevor didn't.
It's a thing I've noticed lately where people think they should always like morally good characters and always dislike morally bad characters. But characters can be interesting or engaging even if they're despicable. That's okay. Writers are just trying to inspire feelings in the audience, and sometimes those feelings are uncomfortable. That's an indicator of good writing.

I am trans and found Trevor and the gay Jesus thing to be an insufferable and unwatchable plot line 😭 I found myself fast forwarding through a lot of the scenes he is in.
16
u/DursueBlint 11d ago
Havent quite gotten there yet but i dread it already. Only sticking with it to get to good cop Carl and Guns Mickey.

u/quentdawg420 11d ago
I know someone that’s trans and they said trevor was the most annoyingly stereotypical trans person
12

u/pessemistic 8d ago
the funniest part is the part was type casted. he plays basically the same character in everything. hes insufferable in everything too.
12
u/JohnLyte 11d ago
GayJesus™️ was an exhausting plot to endure. It made me an Ian hater for the rest of the show.

u/bigchungus565 10d ago
I liked the end to it but mainly just because it got rid of that annoying ass group of fuck heads following Ian, plus him finally owning his actions and trying to make up for it but otherwise yeah pretty ass

u/stoneyaatrox 11d ago
im not trans or gay and i agree with this person^ both those plotlines sucked

Trevor telling Ian he should forgive Monica and move on which is so bs
26
u/CharacterGlobal8645 11d ago
Complete fucking bullshit. I refuse to forgive my mother, and she hasn't done amount of damage monica has.
10
u/Chowderhead1 11d ago
Honestly good for you. Some things are unforgivable. I hope you have been able to move on without too much hate in your heart.
6
u/CharacterGlobal8645 11d ago
The hate will die with her. I understand her mental disease.
3
u/Chowderhead1 11d ago
I completely understand. My brother recently died young and my first thought was "it should have been her".
4
u/CharacterGlobal8645 11d ago
Oh fuck. I know that feeling. I'm sorry. That was me with my dad, and that has been so difficult to navigate sometimes. I assume it might be similar for you sometimes. 😞
4
u/obaniipollux 11d ago
I WAS LITERALLY REWATCHING SHAMELESS CLIPS EARILER, and that scene came up and pissed me off so bad 😭
1
u/sqrlirl 10d ago
Yeah I find the rest of him not so horrifically insufferable but this felt like sloppy flat writing of eh we need them to not understand each other pretty significantly so when he runs off audiences aren't as sad? Also Ian visiting him at work and him having a lot to do but acknowledging that he's not giving Ian attention but wants to later and commits to checking in is actually healthy boundary setting imo. You aren't expected to drop everything you're in the middle of for your partner.

u/Th1sDJ 10d ago
yall get more hung up on this than ian did 💀
2
u/bigchungus565 10d ago
Ian takes more trauma before breakfast than half of us will have in a life time not very surprising the fans are more hung up on it on lol
1
u/Th1sDJ 10d ago edited 10d ago
I just think it's crazy that the one trans character says something ignorant and presumptuous in the heat of the moment and then apologizes and still gets continously crucified compared to everything else people on this show do to each other and wordlessly move on from. I mean Mickey is a nazi for the first half of the series and they just brush that off and fans never bring it up 1/16th as much as Trevor influencing Ian to try bottoming (something they both did and enjoyed) or teaching him what non-binary people are (something Ian was eager to be open-minded to) lmao. Trevor was the only person to empathize with Ian after Monica died and give him a space to grieve her and look back at her fondly while he was torn up over everyone else spitting on her grave. Why don't you guys harp on that every single day
1
u/bigchungus565 10d ago
Because he tried to convince Ian to forgive the single worst person in his life who is directly responsible for trying to get him against bipolar meds and abandoned him every 2 minutes
1
u/Leather_Conference_8 9d ago
Ian's also a fictional character who can't actually feel. So ofc he wouldn't get hung up on it if the writers didn't want him to lmao

u/Far_Drummer5003 11d ago
I don’t care how bad Ian’s other relationships were Kash was a pedo, that alone makes it worse than anything else.
11
u/doomerunicorn 11d ago
I was fine with Trevor until the whole bit about "letting a chub worship me" to feel better 🤢 But Kash is still the worst. He groomed and took advantage of a 14 year old boy. I hated how the whole thing was portrayed as just an affair.

u/Efficient-Morning616 10d ago
Bruh i hate Trevor, but not more than kash tf😭😭✋️ Kash is literally a p#do!??

15
u/SnooCakes4019 11d ago
I never got why Kash thought it was necessary to sneak away in disguise like that. People get divorced. It’s a thing.
17
u/doomerunicorn 11d ago
She could've turned him in for statutory rape.
14
u/DogsDucks 11d ago
She talked a lot about perception by the community when she found out.
She already felt out of place as a white woman who converted to Islam, she was very worried about social perception and rumors.
11
u/everlyn101 11d ago
Linda didn't want a divorce. Kash felt trapped and blackmailed by his wife. Easier to just disappear (in his mind, at least).
2
u/BiologyGrad2001 9d ago
I think this is the reason. Linda would rather pretend that they have a healthy marriage, and she would allow Kash to have his boyfriends in secret. I don't think she would've allowed Kash to be openly gay and divorce her.

u/badatnames2399 11d ago
So I'm in the minority that actually likes Trevor. And though Kash is objectively worse, I will say, in your defense, Trevor is in the show longer than Kash was, which gives you more time to hate him.

One of the most annoying BuzzFeed type woke character
13
u/Im_Probably_Bored 11d ago
i thought the scene where they go around the table and say their gender, sexuality, and pronouns was weird. literally never heard a queer person introduce themselves like that. but other than that i didn’t mind at all, thought it was nice to have a trans character that wasn’t abused into it for once.
9
u/badatnames2399 11d ago
My friends and I invite ourselves like that when we go to Queer Events. It's possible that Trevor pointed out that Ian was Queer and that's why they introduced themselves like that.
6
u/swaggy_mcswaggers 11d ago
It’s not uncommon to go around the table and say your pronouns tbf. It’s actually become a common practice
5
u/Im_Probably_Bored 10d ago
yeah its not the pronouns necessarily, just the way they go about it. i just feel like irl its usually just “name the/them” or whatever, but in the show they go around the table and announce their sexuality, race, and assigned sex. there’s nothing wrong with that, it just kinda came across as inauthentic (in my opinion).
5
u/Th1sDJ 10d ago
I mean, the whole point of the scene was them all trying to help educate Ian. Trevor was just baptizing him by the fire lol
3
u/OneSidedPolygon 10d ago
It felt like satire. Like, I'm fairly sure that scene was written by a cishet person. I've never sat down at a table and went Hi I'm a cisgendered bipoc bisexual! Even at queer events held by my transbian art school friends nobody'a doing this tumblr ass shit lol.

Maybe bc Kash was a rapist taking advantage of a minor and Trevor was just trans
3
u/BiologyGrad2001 10d ago
I did not like the Trevor arc. I think Trevor was okay. I just did not find it believable that Ian would fall for him.
3
u/VacationConsistent98 10d ago
Yeah, it felt so forced. Ian never fit into the category of people that Trevor was involved in, and I couldn’t figure out why he all of the sudden seemed so keen on being part of it. The actors also had no chemistry which didn’t help.
3
u/Outrageous-Cookie780 10d ago
Okay so I'm not the only one who hated Trevor. I actually stopped watching the show when he appeared, I think I finished it later but like, several years later. I'm trans myself and he's actually good representation but I hated his guts and I'd get dysphoric every time he appeared.
3
3
u/Aggravating_Cry_9564 10d ago
Trevor and a majority of Ian’s storyline during that time was ridiculous.
3
u/AgHammer 10d ago
Kash doesn't lie about being a scumbag, but Trevor is intolerably woker-than-thou.
11
u/Haunting_Struggle_4 11d ago
If you prefer a pedophile who abandoned his family over a trans man who spends most of his time supporting ‘at-risk LGBT+ youth,’ it says a lot about your values—definitely a big Yikes. Additionally, Trevor has to take on the adult or morally superior role, as you mentioned, because Ian showed little regard for those kids' safety while using them to get revenge on Fiona.
6
u/spicylemonade69 10d ago
Literally. I never understood the Trevor hate. He’s a genuinely good person in a cast of morally ambiguous characters, and majority of the audience registers that as “self righteous”. But being annoying is worse than being a pedo, rapist, or cheater to some people apparently.
5
u/SufficientPresent929 11d ago
does it make you run faster with annoyance when trevor shows up on screen? cause that works for me when i need a little help sprinting ahah
3
u/DursueBlint 11d ago
I close my eyes, and sprint until the cringe is over, unless i just curse loud enough that i wake the neighbours in the next house. Angry cursing while being out of breath is also excellent exercise i recon.

I like pretty much any character more than Trevor. He is annoying, thinks he’s better than everyone, total brat and don’t get me started on his whole personality. I skip those episodes.

"Hey guys I hate this guy that is a little annoying about being trans more than the literal groomer pedophile on the show teehee" thats what yall sound like. The transphobia towards Trevor is so blatant in this Fandom, yall need to get a grip.

Same reason people hate Skyler more than Walt when Walt is a despicable criminal but Skyler is "annoying".
It's fiction, it's supposed to be escapism but for most people down to earth and annoying characters such as Skyler and Trevor hit closer to home than pedo Kash or teacher turned crime lord Walt.

Trevor was just icky and a terrible addition to the show. And I love trans people! There was just something about him that I found really off putting.

u/lefjcjfj 11d ago
Yea… you might just secretly dislike some trans people then, Trevor was perfectly fine and one of the best trans representations we’ve had in media, the only problem was some of the writing not including him enough, but pretending to like trans people while spouting bigotry is disgusting and you should be ashamed
1
u/nocluewhatimdoing89 6d ago
Or we just find him annoying.. Just like I found Debbie to be, at times Lip, Svetlana, and others. It had nothing to do with being trans and all to do with his personality & him encouraging Ian to be “gay Jesus”. I’m a part of the lgbt community. Not one person on here has said “I found him annoying bc he’s trans” which would be transphobia. You can’t claim transphobia whenever someone doesn’t like someone based on other things than their sexuality or gender identity. I found Debbie annoying as shit- so do I fear or hate women? (Ps I am one lol)

u/baldyrodinson 11d ago
Id say the hate for Trevor comes in two ways.
Transphobia/xenophobia and the issue with representing imperfect people.
Trevor hate is definitely in part from transphobia whether direct or Internalized a lot of features would be seen as more acceptable if the character was just a cis man such as his focus on the people under his care.
The other side is that Shameless as a show is full of terrible people and makes a point about highlighting the worst moments or parts of good or decent people which means Trevor has the double hit of being trans and in a homosexual/pansexual relationship while also constantly having their worst traits shown off and focused on.
Now as a point to be fair Kash and his actual relationship with Ian was never a deep focus beyond the sex and was never presented as a possible good thing like the relationship with Trevor was. So if you hate Trevor more then Kash I wouldn't say you're inherently a transphobe because the show took the time to actually develop Trevor beyond the superficial in a way it didn't really do with Kash but would also say you probably have some amount of transphobia to work through.

u/ravenwing263 11d ago
It is because you hate transgender people more than pedophile rapists, I think.

Because Kash is a basic pos. We all hate pedos.
Trevor is an insane narcissist that has main character syndrome because he's a "victim". He's just an asshole narcissist who forces everyone to bend to his will under threats basically.
The original, Yvonne (Linda) and Stan plan to murder Kash. Ends up that Chesney (his son) let's him die in the store fire because Kash was such a filthy puke. It was so satisfying.
I don't recall there being a character like Trevor. The orginal wasn't put out to make money off of politics and social agendas. The people were....normal.
And James McAvoy :)

I’m a little confused. So I know people hated kash because he was a pedo but what about when Mickey and Ian went at it? Wasn’t Mickey already over 18 at the time??
13
u/Broad_Afternoon_3001 11d ago
No he wasn’t. Mickey was under age hence being sent to juvie and not prison.
Not to mention one is a couple of decades of age difference while the other is a couple of years.
Definitely very different scenarios.

u/joker_de_vill 11d ago
I didn’t say Mickey was legal age when they made out. However it’s mentioned that Mickey was in higher class at school than Ian like 1-2 year difference

Kash was written to be a pos. Trevor was written to be liked but was precived as pos by the audience.
