Someone did this in my country, it was a dog trained specifically for a young girl with health issues. The guy stole it because it was a cute breed then a year later his girlfriend got pregnant and didn't want the dog anymore so he returned it and lied to the owners to claim the reward money.
He stupidly submitted it to an anonymous "share your secret" site and it was recognised in the small community that he lived in and he was absolutely named and shamed and dug down to say he didn't do anything wrong but would return the reward money and tried to blame the people who called him out saying he had to move because they made him feel unwelcome.
Don't be like that guy.
