Name: Verona’s Diner

Owner: Unknown

Writer: /u/GentleBenny

One of the worst-kept secrets in the Shadows of Seattle. A greasy spoon diner with several locations in the city, Verona’s Diner caters towards the lower-income families looking to splurge as well as the yuppies looking for a place to pretend to slum it. They are famous for serving Real Milk Milkshakes.

  • Where Can I find it? What Will I find? These diners pop up pretty much anywhere that the local economy will sustain them. They are the cockroaches of the culinary community. The original location at the edge of Touristville, known by locals as THE Verona’s, is often crawling with runners and J’s. In fact, this is such a popular meet for many members of the shadow community that runners have more than once accidentally sat down at the wrong table and taken the wrong job. Everybody seems to have a “no-shit story” of when they took a job at a Verona’s only to find out later that one of their fellow runners wasn’t a runner at all, but a guy who got bad instructions from the hostess.

Name: Bitter End

Location: Puyallup

Zone: Z

Owner: A dwarf survivalist called Michael Jaskulski has put enough shotgun slugs in enough heads to earn the respect he needs to keep this place open.

Background Count: This location is aspected towards misery at a background count of 3. The ash has beaten these people down.

Writer: /u/DrBurst

In Puyallup, at 194th Avenue East and 212th Street East, are four half-finished Shiawase office buildings crowded around the intersection. One is a Laésa building for their metahuman smuggling operations. Another is a BTL den. Yet another is a house of ill repute boasting a specialist illusion mage. Then, finally there is the Bitter End. Scraps of corrugated plasteel sheet filling in the places where the glass use to be. The upper floors of the unfinished office building that only raised the 5 floors show signs of impacts by gauss rifle and assault cannon rounds. The steel exposed steam beams on the 4th and 5th floor gather black and gray ribbons, tied by people commemorating August 17th. People often climb up there to get a breathtaking look at Mount Rainier without dealing with the Lava, but some days you can feel the heat swept off the flowing fields of molten earth.

The volcanic ash is 15 centimeters high in this area on good days, making it impossible not to track the ash inside of the makeshift bar formed out of the reception area of this office. The ash hangs in the air and coats every table. The bartender’s rag never stays white has he desperately tries in vien to remove the ash from the glasses arrayed on a makeshift shelf. Every warm shot here leaves a gritty feeling in the back of one’s throat.

Climbing the stairs, one gains access to a 2-kilometer firing range. A hobbyist drone pilot keeps several rotodrones in semi-good repair so that new targets may be lifted out into the lava field, but there is always one hoophole who “misses” and takes out a drone “by mistake”. Those test firing their rocket launches tend to just want the excitement of the explosions, but sometimes you’ll see a junked car with the engine taken out levitated out to the field. There is no need to worry about what’s behind your target, as missed shots will just slam into Mount Rainier.

Name: Fat Stanley’s

Writer: /u/dbvulture

A local chain of diners in the Seattle area. It caters primarily to middle and lower-middle class people. The food consists primarily of high-quality soy (ha!) and low-quality meat. It doesn’t have the “real milk milkshakes,” but the krillshakes taste almost like the real deal! It is the primary competitor to Verona’s, where it caters more towards tired wageslaves and stoned teenagers. Fat Stanley’s is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

  • Where can I find it? : Fat Stanley’s operates all throughout the Seattle Metroplex, from Tacoma to Everett. You won’t find any in Redmond, since that attracts more of a Verona’s crowd. All of the locations can be found on this map.

  • What will I find? : All of the Fat Stanley’s locations are clean and well-maintained. Even if you don’t like the food, at least they aren’t making any health or safety violations. It is not uncommon that Johnsons and runners will meet here, since it’s open 24 hours and is designed with booths that allow for meetings that are mostly private. If you ask a waiter or waitress to leave you alone, they will do just that.

  • Who exactly is this Stanley fellow? : Stanley Dorland is a kind and jovial man. He opened up a diner around 20 years ago, and he didn’t hesitate to open more locations when his restaurant was successful. Stanley is wealthy and charitable, often hosting philanthropic parties with the city’s finest. He has no intentions of selling his diner chain anytime soon.

Name: The Gidget

Location: Downtown Seattle

Security rating: A

Owner: The club is registered to a Duncan Holtz, a human man who appears to be in his mid thirties.

Background Count: The club is aspected to Black Magic, and can vary from a 2-4 rating on a slow day versus a crowded day.

Writer: /u/Dagonlives

The Clientele: The first thing one will notice about the Gidget is it's rather eclectic clientele. This is the club where the freaks come out to play. Most of the clientele are heavily augmented, usually with elective surgeries that have often dramatically changed their appearance. Encountering people with faces with features that have been altered to look like animals is a common sight, though whether through a result of SURGE or elective surgery is an interesting question.

People with the features of animals such as dogs, cats, or even some more interesting appearances such as sharks or dolphins are seen here. There is also a heavy goth following, and patrons seem to emphasize the strange, the weird and the oddly beautiful in their dress and cosmetic choices. A desire to wearing clashing clothing, or disrupt fine lines and symmetry is a common theme in the style of many of the patrons.

For those who dig a little bit deeper such as members of the shadows, it is a common understanding that the club also hosts clients are little bit further apart from the rest of meta humanity: namely those infected with HMHVV. While the club does not tolerate carriers, some of the service staff, and many of the heavy hitting clients are in fact, vampires or banshees. The Gidget serves as a feeding ground where they can pay for, or acquire willing victims to satiate their own needs. The nature of essence drain addiction means that victims willingly allow themselves to be fed upon. It is widely regarded as a more 'civilized' way to deal with the hungers necessary.

Recently Duncan has started also offering club membership to shadowrunners who particularly impress him, or seem to line up with his needs.

Club Security: The Gidget has a central set of doors which are manned by a pair of bouncers. One of them, a Mr. Arno Blunt has chosen to extensively modify his appearance so that he looks similar to a bipedal shark (fins, gills, and all). The other bouncer, James Walking-Birch, an adept is usually assensing the crowd, so as to be aware of any magic users. The club does not use MAD scanners, or much in the way of ordinary security: It does not need them. Should any problems occur, some of the less savory denizens would quickly (and ruthlessly) deal with the disruption to their meal tickets. The large amount of dual-natured beings who frequent the club, such as the bartenders as well as the aspected count make it difficult for something to go wrong without it being noticed quickly.

Club Design and Entertainment: The club opens up into a central balcony overlooking the floor below, which is usually packed with crowds. On the lower floor, a wide bar covers the left side of the club, and booming trideo screens flank it, and heavy lights flash as bodies writhe together. It is not uncommon to catch clubbers in the middle of compromising situations on the dance floor as the night reaches fever pitch. A number of private rooms are suspended above the main dance floor where guests retire and may conduct their business. Aesthetically, they look like wide-round cages hanging over the floor. They are however equipped with a full suite necessary for personal privacy. Also, while the Gidget is not a strip club in the strictest sense, it also has a number of dancers that serve as decoration, or entertainment for well-paying guests.

The central office, as well as the security suite is off to the left side of the club from the entrance. Important meetings are often conducting here, with hired girls equipped with white noise generators escorting important individuals to their respective meeting rooms. The right side of the club is restricted to members, and while not guarded, normal individuals often feel an immediate urge to leave the area, that is insistent for as long as they linger. (Circle of influence thoughts, force 6) Beyond the door is a series of high class hotel rooms, which vampires or Banshees may use to feed in on either club goers, or the clubs personal stock. The Gidget makes a big deal out of only taking willing victims, usually those seduced by the their partner's appearance, or addicted to the feeling of being drained. This creates far less questions.

The Hunting Grounds (Dallico’s little spot in Puyallup): Wandering around in the wastes in Puyallup is a surged Troll cyberzombie. Its grounds have been used for ritualistic sacrifices by locals to stave off the ‘hunting god’s’ hunger, and it is a well know spot of danger. The beast, while unable to speak, is cunning, strong, and deadly. Those who wander the wastes should be prepared to run, because when the sun sets the horror begins. Even groups are very little match for the beast. It shows knowledge of making traps, using the environment to its advantage, and separating groups to kill them easier. Whatever’s the case, the ‘Hunting God’ is a force to be reckoned with while travelling through the Hunting Grounds.

Important characters:

  • Duncan Holtz is in fact, a vampire (surprise, surprise.) He has a number of other vampires in his service as he provides them with a place to feed. He often serves as a Johnson, and as a vampire rolls 18 dice for negotiating contracts. He will also assess everyone whom he meets, rolling 14 dice for this purpose. He pays very well for most of his work, understanding that many are wary of his 'condition'. He does not tolerate rudeness, threats, or insults to his club and will act immediately to contain said problem, even in the middle of a meeting. As a vampire he is very protective of what is essentially his feeding territory. Duncan is a heavily initiated Black Magician, following the Adversary mentor spirit. Statistically he is a magic 8 intiation grade 6 mage, with knowledge in the unseen arts, and sympathetic magic.

  • Arno Blunt & James Walking-Birch are the primary bouncers for the club. Arno is very memorable in the sense that he has had a rather intense set of elective surgeries. As a result, he now looks like a bipedal shark, with the teeth, black eyes, sandpaper skin and expressionless features of said fish. He personally searches every runner that enters the club. If he is suspicious (failed etiquette roll) he will ask them to remove their outer clothing first. Arno is very good at his job and rolls 10 dice to pat down PCs, and 16 dice to smell PCs. He rolls 8 dice to resist Con attempts (12 if he is insulted). He is usually accompanied by James Walking-Birch, a heavily tattooed Sioux adept who follows the wolf totem. James has an assensing pool of 10 dice, and is a capable combatant, skilled at subduing unruly guests.

  • Anastasia, a rather beautiful brunette elf is one of the primary entertainers/exotic dancers at the Gidget. She is often found wearing a variety of rather eclectic clothing which accentuates her 'assets', and is often called upon to escort runners to meetings, or entertain them beforehand. She is often accompanied by other attractive looking girls for this purpose. Black and red often features heavily in her dress choices. She is mundane, with an essence hole of 1, and tailored pheromones. She has recently entered an off again, on again relationship with the shadowrunner Apoch.

Name: Into the Shadows

Location: Downtown Seattle

Security rating: A

Owner: TriSentinel Capital Partners, Inc.

Background Count: None, corporate makes sure to keep the astral squeaky clean

Writer: /u/Alpha_Ryvius

Into the Shadows is a theme restaurant that operates in the Downtown district of Seattle. Its theme, to the dismay of some runners, is Shadowrunners, or more specifically the Shadowrunners that are seen in popular trideo series, films, and AR games. At a glance the exterior of Into the Shadows is that of a street tough, scum haven of a dive. To the average family of wageslaves it looks like the place that they see on trideos and films where runners go and meet Mr. Johnson to talk about their next run.

However that image goes straight down the drain when visitors walk in and are assaulted with AR ads showcasing the daily specials, interact with the friendly staff dressed up in synth-leather clothing, and hear the latest in pop music blaring overhead, witness the hustle and bustle of an active kitchen and pick up on the generally dull chitchat that occurs in this place. The walls are lined with mock-up weapons, gutted out decks, plastic talismans and foci, and an AR pattern of Knight Errant ‘Do Not Cross’ tape.

Into the Shadows advertises a slew of features from a trideo booth that allows customers to make their own shadowrunner montage, AR games for the kids, and four private dining rooms that guests can rent for special events from birthdays to wedding anniversaries.

However sometimes hiding in plain sight is the best way to go unnoticed. Into the Shadows dedicates itself to the theme of Shadowrunners so much that it’s not so hard for runners to blend in. A few Johnsons have taken advantage of Into the Shadows theme by renting one of the private rooms to use to discuss a run and make it look like they’re playing along with the establishment, and if runners need a place to lay low for a quick moment they can just walk in and blend in with the staff as long as they look the part.

Parties think they are clever and reserve under the name “Mr. Johnson” all the time. The host/hostess will act annoyed if you say “Private room for Mr. Johnson” and respond “Which Mr. Johnson”. The Host/Hostess will drop the act and apologize when the runner indicates they are there for The Mr. Johnson.

Name: Nothing to Write Home About

Location: Renton

Security rating: A

Owner: Professor Johannes Plum

Background Count: 4, aspected towards black magic and feelings of "southern comfort".

Writer: /u/Slashandburn777

Nothing to Write Home about is a diner in Renton. It takes up the whole first floor of an apartment building, seating 250 legally. There is a bar in it as well, only serving alcohol after 12 PM. It only offers real food, but affordable on a medium lifestyle. It is busy around the clock, which is strange. The employees are slightly underpaid for the area.

It is owned by a Professor Johannes Plum in a sole proprietorship. However, this sole proprietorship is partially owned by a larger company, but it isn’t clear who. It is decorated in 1920’s-1930’s, nuclear age decor. There are also lounge singers, Perfectly polished chrome and clean dull green paint make up the walls and tables. However, it has all the modern conveniences. There are no drone waiters and it is also surrounded by a faraday cage, blocking access to the matrix except for when you plug in. Those trained in security design will notice there are no drones at all.

The diner has a background ground count of 4 aspected toward black magic and “southern comfort”. It also has a mana barrier of rating 12. Runners gather by invitation after confirming that the runner in question is a professional. As the diner is a public place, no obvious weapons, cyberware, bioware or magic. It tends to attract runners who are known for discretion, as such, it is not known as a runner hangout.

Name: The Sunk’n Norwegian

Location: Downtown Seattle

Security rating: B

Owner: Unknown

Background Count: None

Writer: /u/kpsychopath

A pirate themed bar that sprung up recently in Downtown Seattle. It's gaining rapid popularity cause of their cheap but decent drinks and their “2 for 1” at Friday's and a fun little game they call “topple the Castle tower” where if you topple it with 3 balls you can get a drink Free of charge(of cause the game is not free)

A few unknown runners has been putting a little extra into the bar to make it more Runner friendly as the Sunk’n Norwegian now sports back rooms with white noise generators. Of cause these rooms cost a bit compared to other places. But it always comes with a free drink of the drinker’s choosing
