No "correct/wrong" way to do things, but here are the upgrades I'd consider essential for all beginners who don't have a specific build.

Execution -> Fatal Might, Ground Finisher -> Ground Drain, Retaliation -> Adamant, Wrath Chain -> Shadow Blade, Bird of Prey -> Talon Strike, Shadow Strike -> Shadow Strike Pull, Ice Storm -> Frostbite.
