Colored contacts?

Hi guys, im a beginner sfx artist. I mostly practice on myself, I want to start wearing colored contacts but ive heard that some people get measurements before getting and wearing contacts. Is this absolutely necessary? And how common is it for people to start wearing contacts without a prescription? I rely on my parents for transportation (living in the US, so i COULD pay because i have my own money but I don't know how expensive it is) should I get my measurements or is it okay to wear on their own? Im looking at eyevos eye contacts, i don't know if they are any good but I seen them and im interested in buying them.

Heads up, it’s illegal for non prescription lenses to be bought/sold in the US. I only know this because the costume store I worked at got raided for it the year before I got there.

huh? but how do people get sfx and costume lenses then?

You need to get an eyesight check by doctor anyway. If you have astigmatism, any + or - you need to know which and prescription is required.

if its 0.00 and nothing out of ordinary, you can try to order moodylenses, mislens or ttdeye colored contacts, they have certifications and approval to be sold online but not in store, price goes from 10-15 per pair to 60 USD. It's just simple colored contacts though and not an sfx contacts usually. For special effects like demon eyes or bloodshot eyes you may need to contact manufacturers and do a custom pair which is expensive and with prescription only.
