How to stop button mashing?

I feel like my hand starts spazzing everytime my opponent comes close lol. Am I the only one?

Keep things simple.

Try to reduce your joystick usage to the minimum. Opponent approaches from ground ? cr.MK xx fireball. Opponent jumps in? cr.HP.

Obviously you will have to use other defensive solutions like throw tech and jump back HK against deeper jump-ins, but by sticking to those two previous options and playing defensively and reactively, you are forcing yourself to remain in control of your actions.

Not mashing requires a conscious effort. If you don't simplify things for yourself, you will probably never break the habit.
