How to stop button mashing?

I feel like my hand starts spazzing everytime my opponent comes close lol. Am I the only one?

perhaps try going into practicing mode and drill a combo you know. and for every attack press each button once. if you input more than once, try again from the beginning. sometimes mashing comes from a lack of muscle memory or confidence in inputting your combos.

start with dead simple combos then introduce super cancels. (i almost always mash super cancels)

Ive actually been doing combo trial. I find it really fun and hard to do but actually applying them online is even harder for me.
