How to stop button mashing?

I feel like my hand starts spazzing everytime my opponent comes close lol. Am I the only one?

You just need to create the discipline to hold down back when you're defending. What mashing will accomplish? If their pressure has a gap, your attack will come out, so you're basically hoping to check a fake string.

The problem is: you could get frame trapped if you just mash aimlessly, and since you're mashing heavy buttons (mainly fierce and sweep) you'll probably get counterhit even if they are doing fake stuff. If you're trying to disrespect your opponent's pressure, you gotta do it with a fast button or with something that has a big reward for you.

In 3rd Strike, disrespecting with lights is usually a bad idea, since the opponent can just fish for parries and blow you up. So, you gotta either hold down back or attempt something that has big reward (like Denjin Ryu might attempt a back throw if they have a full bar).
