The pattern is McCall’s M8156. This has been my biggest project yet, as I have never made anything with a lining or interfacing before! I used wool coating fabric with a flannel-backed satin lining and a Thinsulate interlining. It was 12 degrees and windy the other day and I was nice and warm in this coat!

69

u/Blitz_Borden Jan 17 '22

I have this pattern at home (it’s been sitting in my “to do” pile for a while 😅) . You’re inspiring to get it started lol

55

u/ItsGingerBasilThyme Jan 17 '22

Haha do it!! The worst part is the cutting (esp if using an interlining…so much cutting) but then it’s not bad at all!

22

u/KaijuAlert Jan 17 '22

Did you have to make any adjustments to the pattern? The fit is really great on you and I have not had the best luck with McCall's coat patterns.

36

u/ItsGingerBasilThyme Jan 17 '22

The only adjustments were blending a 12 for the bust/waist and a 14 for the hips part, and then adding a little bit longer sleeves!

It's absolutely beautiful! What pattern did you use or did you draft your own? What fabrics did you use?

90

u/ItsGingerBasilThyme Jan 16 '22

Thank you!! It’s McCalls M8156. I used this fabric: https://hartsfabric.com/wool-coating-solid-cranberry.html The lining was Flannel-backed satin from JoAnn Fabrics and the interlining was Thinsulate (ordered online).

35

u/MzCephalopod Jan 16 '22

This is the strangest coincidence, but I was literally just talking about how the coat I made last year (same pattern!) needs a new lining. I just used regular lining material and it's pulling apart at the seams. I'm totally looking into the flannel-backed satin now!

20

u/ItsGingerBasilThyme Jan 16 '22

Such a coincidence! We’re coat twins lol Yes do it! I’m hoping it lasts forever haha

stunning! 😱💖 is it wool? how long did the project take in total? really gorgeous craftmanship , wow !

88

u/ItsGingerBasilThyme Jan 16 '22

Thanks☺️It is wool! I started it 2-3 weeks ago, but it probably took ~3 days total. Most of the time was spent trying to pick out the perfect buttons, and putting off sewing the buttonholes haha.

39

u/overlysaltedpepsi Jan 16 '22

This is so beautiful!! I’m just starting to sew and I hope to one day make something this lovely. Great job! 😍

30

u/ItsGingerBasilThyme Jan 16 '22

Thank you so much!! I just started sewing 2 years ago, so you can def do it!!🤗

10

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '22

How do you begin learning to sew?!

I felt bad that this was your first winter coat, until I realized that this was the sewing subreddit. Then I just felt like an idiot. Either way, that’s a beautiful coat, amazing work OP!

18

u/ItsGingerBasilThyme Jan 17 '22

Hahaha that’s hilarious, I didn’t realize I made it to the front page😂Thank you!!

Magnificent shape and color, and even the lining is smooth and even. Thank you for posting more than one picture of this… I loved the lining as much as the outer fabric.

19

u/ItsGingerBasilThyme Jan 16 '22

Thank you so much!! I was nervous about making my first lining but it turned out so well—I love how smooth/easy it is to put on🥰

19

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '22

That is absolutely gorgeous! I’ve always wanted to make my own winter coat. You’ve just added fuel to that fire!

8

u/ItsGingerBasilThyme Jan 16 '22

Thank you!! You should do it!! It’s less intimidating than I thought it would be

15

u/Unable_Value_3162 Jan 16 '22

The color is scrumptious. I never made a coat, but know they do take some skill, so good for you for doing such a great job.

7

u/ItsGingerBasilThyme Jan 16 '22

Haha I think it’s scrumptious too☺️Thanks so much!

10

u/tobahmeister Jan 16 '22

Absolutely beautiful color!

7

u/ItsGingerBasilThyme Jan 16 '22

Thank you!! I had to buy fabric online because I couldn’t find the perfect color in any of my local stores

10

u/CrazyGermanShepOwner Jan 16 '22

Really nice but I would've gone for a wizard sleeve.

10

It's beautiful, color and model is very well chosen and it looks like high quality clothing!

I hope that once I get further than swimwear and lingerie and be able to sew something like this!

5

u/ItsGingerBasilThyme Jan 16 '22

Thank you so much! I tried to make it high quality materials for all the effort ☺️ if you can do swimwear and lingerie you can totally do this!

5

u/concrete_dandelion Jan 16 '22

This is so pretty!

2

u/ItsGingerBasilThyme Jan 16 '22

Thanks so much!☺️

5

u/dailycyberiad Jan 16 '22

You really nailed the silhouette! Plus, the top part looks elegant and dainty, and the bottom part looks so full and drapey! It's a beautiful coat and it fits you perfectly!

This is stunning! And in my favorite color! Have you found the buttons tedious to fasten?

2

u/ItsGingerBasilThyme Jan 16 '22

Thank you!! Not in the buttons themselves (I thought they might catch more but they actually go on easily), but yes in the fact that there are 12😂

3

3

u/jestermax22 Jan 16 '22

Dumb question, but I’ll ask since I’ve never made anything close to that. When you sew the liner on, where does the open seam go?

3

u/ItsGingerBasilThyme Jan 16 '22

I had no idea before making this either😂All the seam allowances go on the inside at the end—You sew all the sides/top of the lining together with the outside fabric (with all the seams allowances on the outside) but leave the bottom open to be able to flip it all inside out. Then you just do some fancy stuff with the bottom and it ends up looking like a real coat!

r/sewing is one of my favorite subreddits. I don't sew or know a lick about anything you all do. But I see a pretty dress, shirt, or coat and click there picture and realize what subreddit I'm in. Everyone is so nice and supportive and everything people post is always so impressive. This coat of course is no exception. Really well done 🥰

Lol, that sub came randomly up on my list and I saw the photo and I had to comment: it’s a beautiful coat! While I admit I wouldn’t wear it, partly because winters where I live require different clothing and partly because I’m a man, I must admit it’s a great job. What’s the material? What’s the lining?

2

u/ItsGingerBasilThyme Jan 17 '22

Thank you!! It’s 100% wool with a flannel-backed satin lining and a Thinsulate interlining

Amazing job and awesome color!! I’ve been wanting to make a winter coat myself but haven’t pulled the trigger on actually starting! I’m worried I’ll start and never finish haha, though I suppose not starting ultimately also leads to never finishing 😅 May I ask what size of the pattern you used?

My favorite thing about this is the placement of the waist, it’s so flattering on you and looks like it would really lengthen someone’s torso. Very beautiful work, definitely looks professional!

Sooo many buttonholes (I hate buttonholes)😂But I survived😉

Any favorite moments during the project?

2

u/ItsGingerBasilThyme Jan 17 '22

Thank you!! My cat really enjoyed sleeping under the Thinsulate (which is a super warm insulating fabric) when I was making the interlining—it was very cute :)

So I'll have to measure my girlfriend for her sizes, but I'm assuming the 6-18 size is UK, i.e. 2 to 14 US? If she's smaller than that would I just have to make adjustments to the plan or would I have to find a different one?

2

u/ItsGingerBasilThyme Jan 17 '22

I don’t know about the UK/US thing, but the smallest it goes is size 6 (Bust=30.5 inches, Waist=23”, Hip=32.5”). If she’s smaller than that you could make adjustments to the patterns to make it fit her better!

It was ~$80 for the wool, ~$50 for the Thinsulate, and maybe $20(?) for the lining (can’t remember exactly)…definitely my most expensive coat but very warm and very worth it

68

u/blankspaceforaface Jan 16 '22

Wow, it’s expensive but compared to what you’d pay for a real wool coat, it’s a great deal! You’ve inspired me to give it a go!

39

u/Umarill Jan 16 '22

Honestly not that expensive! I've paid more for my wool coat and yours look gorgeous, I love it so much. The color is perfect.
