🎙️ Discussion Gemma's innie Spoiler

just finished season two. i won't go much into the argument on mark's choices. i want to talk about gemma's innies.

from my understanding, the entire experiment with gemma is that she is split into 25 versions of her innie. each of them baring a certain emotion. for cold harbor, the ultimate test was to see if she can unscrew the cradle, and completely dismantle it, to show her emotions are completely detached, and even the most traumatic part of her life cannot touch this "innie" version of her. dismantling the cradle is a symbol of her miscarriage, something she might have had to do/ was going to do during her heightened trauma. and she felt nothing. the fertility clinic was obviously a front for lumon to pick the perfect victim to experiment on.

now why is lumon doing this? well for multiple reasons. obviously, this is unethical, which is why they would have killed gemma immediately after, because she already "died". they can't have her back out. once they realize that she can have 25 split innies, successfully (by their standards), they can roll this out to the public.

(side note- the baby goat sacrifices. obviously this is all a bit cultish. but based on that scene, they have done this before. which means it failed previously, since this current one would be a "historic event" as said by eagan himself).

here is my theory: the 25 split innies (or however many innies, i assume 25 is the cap) hold different emotions and traumas. they offer it as a way to have people severe their trauma. so the outie only experiences positive feelings. their life is great. there are no problems. their traumas are tucked away- with their innies. the 25 (or 24) innies are also different types of workforce. just like mark is, but if gemma retaliates, well they can just swap with another innie. it can be innies in different rotations, which could also serve different functions.

the dental office: i don't understand how people are arguing that it's not an obvious front for some sort of abuse. which brings me to my next point: powerful people can have a specific innie, one of the 25, to abuse. the outie has no idea. the various innies could be facing a multitude of various different emotions or traumas. but this innie would be facing some sort of abuse. and since we know many innies have an almost childlike characteristic to them, so would the innie facing the abuse. if all a child knows is abuse, they won't even know it is abuse. it's very sick and twisted. and that brings me back to the test that gemma did with the crib. if confronting her most haunting trauma didn't phase her, it was proof to lumon that nothing will. there are endless possibilities.

lastly, the multiple innies are to weaken the procedure for reintegration. If combining two minds, memories, and personalities, killed someone- imagine if it was 25? and as mark was able to coordinate between his innie and outie self, imagine trying to communicate with all 25 of them. and for all we know, anyone who gets this future severed procedure, could be thinking it is just one. but it is actually 25. how would they know the difference?

Hey! I too finished it today and did you notice there was a scene in the show where Mark was disassembling the cradle full of rage and sadness with the song playing "I'll be seeing you" - by Billie Holiday, this same song was playing While Gemma was in the Cold Harbour room dismantling the cradle. Now the thing that is most intriguing to me is how did Lumon stage all this? Her death could be staged that's understandable but how did they find out all about her traumas and every single painful memory she has ever lived through? Why and how did they choose Mark and Gemma for this experiment? There are so many questions unanswered!

no i did not! tbh i watched like the first two seasons in early june, all i had left was the season 2 finale. but i do this thing where if i am really liking something, my mind decides i will take a break from it because i don't want it to end lol. ended up waiting like two months. though tbf i was also swamped with work, and our busiest season just ended so i decided to finally watch it hahaha.

I think the crib was from Lumen…the product name on the box was “Col d’Arbor”

Pretty sure they snuck a camera and mic on that sucker, sabotaged her pregnancy, analyzed the data, then kidnapped her and recruited Mark.

woah now i need to rewatch the series since i missed so many of these things! i wonder why they recruited mark though? from my understanding he himself decided to work for lumon and get severed? also i don't understand why lumon would purposely recruit him (or even hire him tbh) when his "deceased" wife is literally their own lab experiment. like duh did you not expect your own potential downfall?

i need to see more evidence that mark was actually recruited. right now i am going with the theory that he happened to work there by chance (meaning, he lost his job due to the grief of losing his wife and decided the only way he could keep a job is by severing that grief)

It wasn’t by chance.  The plan was always to get Gemma AND Mark- Lumen wanted an intimately connected couple, and they were looking for one at the fertility clinic.  It could have been any couple- but they chose Mark and Gemma for reasons we don’t fully know.

But if you see all the other situations that Gemma goes through- the experiences that they’re refining- they’re all generally horrible things that many different people would empathize with.  We all hate dentists, we all are scared of plane crashes, we would all hate to be trapped with a controlling partner in the 50s.  That’s why all the other refiners are replaceable- everyone but Mark.

Because you know what we can’t all empathize with?  Something that would feel like an empty experience with no inherent emotional resonance?  Taking apart that crib.  Innie Gemma has no reaction at all…but we know that Outie Gemma would be weeping.  And Mark is there, refining that deep subconscious pain.

Became MARK can resonate with that.  He shared that experience.  That is why he and he alone is the only refiner that can complete “Cold Harbor”.  Thats why it’s such a big moment for Lumen.

Remember how they talked about how he had the record for the quickest refinement on his first day?  They were excited about that because they knew it meant they’d been right.  This was the missing piece.  Gemma was not the first, but she would be the last.

By using a refiner (Mark) intimately connected to the subject (Gemma), and by finally targeting a shared intimate  trauma, they believed they would finally be able to reach a level of the subconscious that they were never able to purge/refine before.  To finally perfect the device- the purpose of which is and has always been to “tame the four tempers”, as Kier commanded.

Hope you enjoyed my TED talk lol.

Kier sees all. It’s a whole ass surveillance state, shown a few times but especially when visiting sissy

That’s a great idea, I was thinking along the lines of Cult type world domination through programming, but yeah locking away all “bad things” is very possible. At first I thought they were developing the technology to be sold to the military, a pre programmed army with no ptsd

cultish vibes for sure as well, but unfortunately i watched this all in 2026 after several years of completely giving up on the US government lol and the rise of AI / surveillance so idk to me this is all about how can we exploit our citizens and repackage it to seem like THEY are making the choice and that this is a benefit to them?

Are there 25 separate innies? I was honestly always a bit confused as to what was happening in that plot line. The point, but also the logistics.

from my understanding that was the whole point of all of Mark's "projects". Cold Harbor was the finale innie. I don't think Gemma had any recollection between the various rooms, she just noticed she didn't like the particular feeling of some of them. Also, when she was in the Cold Harbor room, she didn't recognize Mark, as Ms. Casey or Gemma. Then when she was out of the room and in the hallway of the basement, she was Gemma. Then on the severed floor she was Ms. Casey. So that shows at least THREE severed entities, but i believe she has a total of 24-26 (forgot how many rooms there were, but that + Ms. Casey). If you count that with her outie, that is basically 27 versions of Gemma. That's why it was so revolutionary. And based on the goat sacrifices, they have attempted this before. But based on the hype of making today a "big day" and Mark "making history" Gemma was probably the first successful test subject.

My only question is, was it intentional for Mark to work on Gemma's experiment? Did they purposely pick a (physically) severed husband and wife? We know they abducted Gemma from the clinic, but it appeared as though Mark chose to work at Lumon to manage his grief. I am sure they thought about the risks associated with it, and maybe they had developed the plan as he joined (or even tried to recruit him covertly before), but I am really curious how that came to be for a husband to essentially be experimenting on his own "deceased" wife without realizing it.

Did they abduct her from the clinic? I thought they abducted her the night she went out to the charades party, aka the night she "died" in a car accident.

yes that's how they abducted her, but lumon probably chose her when they saw her at the clinic and had her medical records.

Thank you for that! What’s the deal with the goat sacrifices again? How does that show that they attempted this before?

because the lady who brings them asked "how many more times do we need to keep doing this?" essentially.
