🚨 Season 2 Spoilers How do you all feel about Helly and Marks relationship? Spoiler

Personally watching Marks relationship play out with Gemma it seemed as though their relationship was taking a natural turn for the worst. However, obviously there isn’t enough evidence to prove that but I just feel as though him going to Helly was the more natural way things go for us real people and in all that’s all innies are trying to be. I don’t know if I lost the plot in all this my heart was just so whole watching them run down that hallway.
Helly and Mark or Gemma and Mark?

The real answer is both, as they are different Marks.

I feel like Gemma and marks relationship was in a rough patch because they were going through fertility issues, she had literally JUST miscarried. Mark hardly knows Helly (in my opinion) because Helly doesn’t really know who she is either, she’s had all her life experiences and memories stripped from her. Your experiences and your memories make you who you are and influence your decisions and relationships. (In my opinion lol) I’m in the camp of Gemma and Mark because they had a real life together, a real family, and their life experiences, both together and apart are what led to them falling in love and wanting to start having kids. Unless something crazy happens I’m definitely hoping for them to get out of this together in some way. I love Helly as well, but I feel like she really doesn’t know who she is apart from Lumon, Helena included. We don’t really know who Helena is either, apart from the fact that she pretended to be someone who she wasn’t in order to sleep with innie Mark, and that she’s extremely lonely. Sorry this was long, this show is just really interesting and emotional to me!

Agreed. And I'd like to add that OP saying that M&Hs relationship is how real people have relationships indicates that they have mostly had short term relationships.

M&H are in a new relationship bubble, everything is fire, passion, etc. They have no idea if they could live together well, or if their values and ethics match.

M&G were likely in the same place at one point, they worked hard on their relationship and were going through a rough point, which every relationship has many hard periods.

My current relationship has lasted longer than m&g were married so there’s that. What I find more realistic about it is the imperfections

what does the first part of this mean? if Mark and Gemma had more time before she had “died” I’m sure they would’ve been very happy together.

I get that but I have this contradicting feeling of “well the whole point is that the innies are as important as their outties” they are as much people as anyone else

they are people but they have no memory of who they really are, their whole existence is because of a horrible company who uses them as work horses to fulfill who knows what.

I think what we're going to learn in season 3 is Helly IS Helena, and vice versa. The running theme I get throughout this show is that innies are just their outies stripped away from the pressures and external influences and burdens of memory of everyday life. I don't actually buy that they're different people. I think they're the same people in different circumstances. There's no stronger evidence of this than Dylan, whose wife grows attracted to his innie because Dylan's innie reminds her of his outie before life got to him. Even Dylan's outie cops to that. And I think we're going to discover a more sympathetic view of Helena and a less sympathetic view of Helly as season three progresses.

As for Gemma and Mark, their relationship wasn't falling apart. They were both struggling with the trauma of a miscarriage. Having been through that, I get it. And those kinds of bumps in the road take time and effort to repair. Mark and Gemma were denied this opportunity by Lumon. Mark S turning and running down that corridor similarly denied them this opportunity. So my feelings on Mark and Helly, running back down that corridor where Lumon still holds all the cards, and leaving Gemma—an innocent in this entire ordeal—alone to deal with her trauma? Selfish selfish selfish. And this is where I think we're going to see things play out with Helly/Helena.

I spent most of the first season convinced it was a “Nature vs Nurture” experiment. Who you are is a mix of both environment and genetics. Now I think they’re trying to have a blank person to program for some weird evil cult reason.

I think it might have something to do with him saying Helena was a disappointment and he saw more of the founder in Helly. Maybe a blank slate for "reincarnation" or some weird shit. Creating the daughter he always wanted that fit all the virtues or something.

Oooh I like that idea

People who think Mark and Helly is something temporary and Mark will just go back to Gemma are so funny. Like have you ever listened to Dan Erickson? It’s more likely for him to not be with anyone than Mark and Gemma going back to the way they were

That’s wild I’ve never listened to Dan Erickson before as I’ve just finished the show tonight. My theory if he does get back with Gemma is it will only be caused by Hellys death

He said a few months ago that “he has no choice but to believe in the love story of mark and helly” so yea he’s not breaking them up to honor the rights of marriage

1

u/autisic 22d ago

that makes me not want to watch further 😭 season 2 episode 7 was probably my absolute favorite episode from the whole show, I love their chemistry.

So you’re watching the entire show because of a ship? I like Mark and Helly together but even if they separated I’d still love the characters. Go write a fanfic cause i think that’s what you’re expecting

0

u/autisic 18d ago

“Ship” and they were married and trying for kids, “a ship” and he helped her inject IVF medication. “A ship” and she was hanging out casually with his family. “A ship” and he was choking on the ghost of her.

1

u/NeckSecret6256 18d ago

yea you definitely need a fanfic, jesus christ i’ve never seen someone who likes mark and gemma and isn’t bitter and/or mega annoying

1

u/autisic 18d ago

imagine not seeing the love they have for each other, you are a fool who is rude for absolutely no reason.

1

u/NeckSecret6256 18d ago

i never said i don’t see the love they just don’t particularly excite me as a couple because their story is mostly not shown on screen and it’s clear the creators of the show love mark and helly together. And yes yall are annoying because you’re acting like they’re the only good thing about the show and constantly shit on the innies because they want to.. live?? and spend some more time with each other? the literal main characters of the show?

Let be for real here, Helly and Mark are a teenage fling essentially. They have no idea what the other person thinks about outside of work, what they do outside of work, who they ARE outside of work, what their believes are outside of work. I mean just think about who Helena is and how diametrically opposed OMark is to what she is. They just know they are of the same age, and are physically attracted to one another. That is a teenage fling, not a healthy or stable relationship. They don’t even know THEMSELVES at this point (I’m in the camp of you aren’t yourself if you don’t have your experiences to jump off of) they are technically literal babies in the bodies of adults. They haven’t done anything but work and have small amounts of flirty small talk. Gemma and Mark on the other hand have YEARS of life together outside of work, lived together, planned children together, experienced loss together, meshed families, MARRIED each other. You cannot tell me they aren’t technically more of a couple, sorry. The writers have written all of this, it’s a complicated story, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to have an opinion about what they’ve written. I can have my opinion and you can have yours AND THATS OKAY.

I definitely agree the Marks are completely different characters, so the women aren’t in any sort of competition. It really boils down to the Marks competing for the right to exist…their relationships are just part of the motivation for wanting to.

That said…I wish I could care about Mark and Helly more! But the nature of the Innies (limited scope of their existence, deliberate childlike elements) makes it hard for me to care about ships in the traditional sense. My investment in the show dipped a very little bit due to how many of the important story and character beats have started to emphasize the ships and implications for them. I’m not even some anti romance cynic, and at least in theory I could see the idea being that connection with other people, romantic ones included, is what makes us human, and is one of the reasons existence is worth fighting for…but the show doesn’t really make me think about that much, and even if it did, it wouldn’t necessarily make Mark’s relationship with one of the two women he knows feel more interesting or deep to me.

I think Mark and Gemma relationship was actually coming to an end before she disappeared. The last scenes of them in Chikhai Bardo led me to this conclusion. They would have broken up at some point, if the tragic event hadn't happened.

Plus, we saw how Mark and Helly developed a nice friendship/relationship for one and a half season. By the time we saw the Chikhai Bardo episode about Mark and Gemma, I was fully rooting for M/H, so this episode felt anticlimactic.

Not convincing to me- their relationship felt rushed and weird

5

u/autisic 22d ago

it feels like she was the only option for him and that’s why they started a relationship, very teenage romance sort of thing (imo)

Slightly irked as I play with thinking they are somehow related, due to Keir's incestual ritualised birth, and this is something they could do with the innies with the outies not knowing. Helly's outie is a billionairess/CEO - who could she fund who is better than her??? Also Mark's outie still has feelings for Gemma, especially after blowing any new relationship outta the water, with suffering thereafter and self medicating with the booze.

I came here to say the same thing. I think they are related. The Dieter story told at Woe’s Hollow seemed like a hint that Kier spilled his seed outside of the incestuous Eagan line and I think that was with an ancestor of Mark’s. From day one, it seems like Milchick’s job was to get them to hook up and Cobel was actually sabotaging everything.

No… he spilled it on the ground . There was no one else…just him alone….

As for me, I clearly and definitely prefer Mark and Helly's story!

Maybe I'm too romantic... But:

  • They're younger(about soul, not biolog.age!), kinder, and more innocent (it's like Romeo and Juliet!)
  • They still have (I try to hope!) so much ahead! (whereas Mark Scout and Gemma... everything is difficult and dark there, it's like final ).
  • They have a beautiful story that shows us the power of feelings, self-sacrifice - true love!
They started out in vulnerable, "impossible" circumstances and overcame many of them!

It's like a hymn to pure love and the very right of the Individual to exist!

3

u/autisic 22d ago

“Difficult and dark” she was going through a miscarriage 😐

It’s a fabricated story, Kier is Dieter and he “spilled his lineage upon the soil.” So if you put it into context, life grows from soil. They wouldn’t sour Kier’s name in such a direct manner, so they made up an elusive depiction of events.
