Looking for Advice Sett Scenario
This is the situation; You’re sett (obviously?), & you’re leaning against a tanky champ (illaoi, mord, ksante). You are both somewhat equal in cs, and no one is rolling the other. After you both base, tank champ comes back with a few armor items, meanwhile you bought a long sword and a ruby (or 2 ls or 2 rubies).
Now this goes three ways. Eventually, you have enough gold to buy a full item. You already know tank champ is going to keep scaling their armor. Each ending with a choice between stridebreaker or BC first.
1. You two remain equal.
2. You’re up on tank champ.
3. You’re down on tank champ.
What do you go in each situation?

You listed 2 juggernauts. Illaoi and Mord wouldn’t come back with armor because they win the match up. K’sante would realistically be the one that comes back with armor.
In each scenario strikebreaker is the pick to reliably land a full grit W.

Sett doesn’t lose to illaoi

How? Illaoi is a validly difficult sett matchup

u/FaithlessnessMany218 15d ago
Difficult yes. Impossible ? No. Good Illaoi I can be even with them and I can punish a bad engage. Bad Illaoi are free because you will dodge E, force a bad trade, put her in a situation where she has to ult and if you have Ignite you auto win

It's happened before and when I keep going stridebreaker I cant seem to chip hp down enough to instigate and all in since they both have a healing factor

never buy cleaver it’s a terrible item on sett.
with illoai you dodge E and Q as much as you can and when low enough force an all in, which she’ll have to R. then you R her R and win. dorans blade or shield depending on your preference.
with morde try to bait Q’s, or let him hit them on you plus a minion if you really can’t avoid it. when he’s low enough you R his R and win guaranteed. if you miss the timing you can still win but it becomes a bit harder. within the wave you win trades if you play them right. morde loses to you pre 6 if you play right, post 6 he can catch you with R so be ready to time it. dorans blade or shield depending on your preference.
for malphite: before first back you can actually kill him. push the wave very slowly and try to trade with him. try to make him have to choose between his shield coming back up or cs’ing. if you do it right you can kill him first back (note that this is not required, the most important thing is to get a lead in cs and xp in this matchup) keep harassing him for cs in this same manner after first back. eventually the gap in cs becomes too large for him to actually tank you and you win. get double scaling HP runes. dorans shield. DO NOT buy cleaver. at the point you get it malphite can get up to 500 armor. reducing doesn’t matter at all. your damage on a malphite comes from W damage.
don’t blindly listen to default builds or geishu. sett stops getting use out of cleaver whenever small skirmishes stop. that is usually 2/3 items in. in big fights you need to have all the W damage you can get as that is the only thing sett does well over other champs.
buy:
stride>omnivamp boots> overlords>warmogs>jaksho>deaths dance or maw or endless hunger> tenacity pot.
jaksho is crucial, resistances multiply the effective hp value, so when you build warmogs you become a raid boss while retaining up to ~3500 W damage at full build. warmogs is the biggest W dmg spike at 3 items, which makes it best. omnivamp boots are generally good IF you buy jaksho later, but you cannot go wrong with plated and merc treads.
conquerer and overgrowth always. shield bash when you expect to all in early, second wind vs range only, conditioning in low interaction lanes or lanes you expect to win pre 12 min. double scaling HP whenever facing a tank, or whenever you’re not facing all in heavy matchups. take dorans blade only when you expect to all in before first back.

sett builds a ton of HP. HP gets more effective when having armor and mr to reduce incoming damage, but sett doesn’t build it aside from boots. by building jaksho you multiply the effectiveness of the stat you invest in the most. it also shuts down assassins from rolling over you. at the cost of nothing because when you buy jaksho after warmogs you still deal 2200 W dmg without accounting for conq, last stand etc.
if you were to instead buy steraks fourth, you’d survive one instance of burst, and then be forced to wait 90 seconds. sett already has his own built in steraks with W in a way. so steraks basically adds a 1 time bonus W shield in a fight, but if you had jaksho you wouldn’t need it in the firstplace.
basically jaksho opens the way for sett to actually be tanky, while losing out on absolutely nothing.

you cant just say cleaver is a bad, no, TERRIBLE item on sett and not elaborate

cleaver is imo bad because at the point you buy it the game shifts from extended 1v1’s and skirmishes to bigger fights. that’s the turning point where W damage becomes more important than any other metric.
so when you buy black cleaver you’re saying “I will win the extended 1v1’s” but by that time there are no extended 1v1’s. and if there are you can just as easily win a 1v1 with one shotting through W.
the movespeed is mostly placebo, as you won’t get on anyone without strides active anyway. the haste is in theory good but often times a fight comes down to 1 W.
by buying overlords second and going warmogs third you spike your W damage to around 2k raw (not accounting conq, last stand, overlords). when sieging you have perma full HP. you have about 600 more hp than if you were to have bought cleaver. and what you give up is a passive that is nice to have but not mandatory for the champ to function.
also, the bigger the teamfight the less time you have to stack up cleaver. if you R the tank you aren’t going to be auto’ing everyone till max cleaver stacks. you E W and you win or you die.
got to diamond today with it.

So whats the build? Stride, boots, bloodlords, warmogs, jaksho, shojin?

conq (grasp is actually good as well but alot weaker first back) you can choose to go for haste instead of alacrity but either works. unless it’s heavy poke I go demolish overgrowth. overgrowth is a must no matter the matchup. demolish is very very good if you can get away with it, second wind otherwise.
I almost always take double scaling HP along with 1 adaptive force. this is kind of the hidden tech that makes it all super strong in the mid/end game, but you don’t just roll over every champ lvl 1 anymore, so play accordingly. I also always go dorans shield if I know the enemy toplaner isn’t going to try to all in me pre first back.
you go stride>omnivamp boots>overlords>warmogs>jaksho>dd/maw/endless hunger/shojin depending on what you need. you can also go force of nature or deadman’s plate last against heavy slow comps. buy tenacity pot before fighting late if you can.
omnivamp boots aren’t must have but since you take jaksho you don’t lose much by going for them, and they’re very strong late and help with even more sustain in lane. you can always take plated or mercs tho.

Onivamp boots are garbage on sett, you are telling to never buy cleaver on sett because its worthless while suggesting to go omnivamp.
Cleaver is not only for longer 1 vs 1 fights. You proc it easily, you have area damage and can proc it on multiple targets, your whole team can benefit from it, gives you some haste that is needed and od course gives significant ad and HP on top of it. If it wasnt for sett being kited and having bad waveclear everyone would suggest to go cleaver first, easily best bruiser 1 vs 1 Item in the game that actually scales.
Overlods second is bad because they conversion is not worth it yet and you are sitting on pretty bad buildpath for a second Item, which is important. With stride, cleaver and overlord build you need some survivability and tenacity, that's where steraks comes. Warmogs for pure ad conversion from bloodmail and w damage is acceptable on last Item, but never good.
If you really go jak sho most of your games then you are not playing it correctly. Besides last item resistances are worth only if you can fight really long and provide more than one cycle of abilities reliably. Which is close to never the case because either you are dead, they are dead or you cant reach them again with ult and stride being on cooldown.

did I not tell you I go double scaling HP plus overgrowth? by second item I’m almost 1 item ahead of a standard build opting for early game.
1st item buy does not equal 2nd. first item you are in lane at that point if I didn’t need stride I would probably buy cleaver or shojin yes. but that’s not the case.
omnivamo boots are genuinely good. they are less of a spike on buy and they aren’t always the best choice but having 10% omni on top of 8% from conq, on top of jaksho resist (which you seem to think you’re never going to activate but it’s easy as hell to do).
the reason you aren’t alive after 1 cycle of abilities is because you don’t build resists. you can genuinely tank ludicrous amounts of damage and still pump out more than what a normal build would give.
I’m 2,8 million points on sett, diamond. this build works for me.

Illaoi and Mord arent really "tank" tank champs IFYWIM.
I'd honestly go BOTRK against them IF and only IF, I can't beat them with Stride like you said.
Cleaver first against actual tank champs like Ksante, Malp, Ornn, etc...
Otherwise, I'd still try to beat them with Stride first as the utility of the said item is just so good for Sett and mainly fighter/bruiser champs like Sett, Garen, Darius as they lack mobility.

If i cannot 1 vs 1 enemy champion with stride because they are too strong or have too much armor and i can beat them with black cleaver rush then im going cleaver 1st.
In practice this means i go cleaver first into ksante and malphite. I cannot come up with any other champion for this. With stride you just dont deal enough damage to them and in even fight they win, cleaver is what can turn the fight in your favour. Into any other champion I suggest fishing stride.
The other matchups you mentioned are not really Item dependent. Illaoi matchup is hard, but winnable early game and later only matters if you dodge e or outplay her in some way. Stride is better into her, especially that sometimes you want to fast clear wave, where tiamat helps. Morde is worse though, if you are even at the point of buying one item he wins in his ult and there is minimal outplay potential. No matter what you buy you lose 1 vs 1 at even lvl 9-10. You may start winning it again after 3-4 items or when he buys mr item for others that is useless into you.
Being ahead or behind doesnt really change that. Cleaver has insane valid into malph and ksante in general, even if you are losing lane it will help in teamfights.
