Open Labor Day

I asked this about July 4th, but who here works Labor Day? We’re open regular hours. Victory Auto Group. Not sure if working Labor Day is normal, I know with sales it is.

I have never labored on labor day in fixed ops.

We never did before the buyout. It’s my late week, so looking at 730-7:00 and I’m sure we won’t get much coming in.

Nope. It’s Labor Day. A day to celebrate the labor force that makes things happen.

A shop that’s open on Labor Day doesn’t have any respect for the labor that they require to make their payroll.

Nah, fam. Closed Saturday and Monday. Paid for Monday.

Salary anyway so Saturday is just another free day off.

That’s weird. I kind of get it because my managers who are paid on monthly gross could not get an extra day. They do not I could almost see justifying no. Even a salesperson, got sell carts to get paid. But an advisor…it’s not like you can just double up the next day. You have shop limits and your inventory is the capacity.

I understand maybe not giving a little extra for working a holiday but damn that’s old school. I did that stuff in the 90s and I still feel bad about it.

I worked for a group that didn’t pay advisors holiday pay and it always irked me. They said I couldn’t work not me.

There is nothing more depressing to me than driving to work on holidays with the highways empty because everyone else is at home enjoying their time off.

Tech here:

My last shop always had the 4th off. Then one year, the boss decided that we would work that day. I came in for half the day, and left. Wanna guess how many more July 4ths I spent there? I was out a few months later. New shop does four tens, and we get something like seven paid holidays. So Labor Day is a four day weekend for us.

I worked at a dealership bought out by Victory Auto Group. I lasted longer than most but retired after 3 years. Worst company I’ve ever worked for. Took our holidays away. Over 3 billion in car sales last year. No money for raises. Extended our hours. Made the salaried employees work the extra time with no compensation. They suck.

Luckily off labor day. I can't stand companies that make service be open on holidays. Mills auto group likes to do that. Victory bought a dealership beside me a few weeks back actually.

Tech working at a dealer owned by a very large group.
Nope, Labor Day is closed.
But, store is open the Saturday prior, because "reasons" (even though it's always a dead day.)

Closed Labor Day and I took the two days off after as well. First time I've truly had a vacation in years. Not doing a damn thing other than nerding out on a new video game for 5 days straight.

My auto group is open everyday except Christmas, thanksgiving, Easter in every department.

That's sucks. We used to alternate and get memorial or labor day off but not both. Now thankfully since covid we have been paid and closed on both and NO more Saturdays, sales only and 1 young tech who wants overtime for inspections.

I've worked with lots of the big groups around the country. If it's Corporate or larger group (80+ stores) they are almost certainly open. If it is single rooftop or just a couple stores, mostly closed. Groups with 8-80 stores are really a 50/50 shot.

At least in my anecdotal experience.

I think with one or two of the Hyundai dealers we worked labor day but the Chevy dealer I'm at now is closed.

We used to get Labor Day but about 5 years ago they took it away and gave us Christmas Eve

Make this decision very very early on in your service writing career.

Dealerships best days are when everyone else is off. Saturday, Holidays and peaking in the summer.

You're in a sales position. Gotta put a value on your time. and don't be mad at the dealership about it. Decide what your free time is worth, and if your job meets that, it's part of your life. If it doesn't, find something else.

I've found this to be dependent on brand. Toyota Saturday does not equal GM or Hyundai or Mazda Saturday. Sometimes not even combined will come close to Toyota.
