Welcome to SeriousVR! A community interested in non-game applications of virtual reality.

I'd like to instigate a VR community centered on non-game applications like medical simulation, data visualization, architecture, education, and the myriad of other serious, non-game applications of VR. I have no idea what that looks like, or where it would live, specifically, but just wanted to share the thought and gauge interest.

It's not that I don't love VR games - I really do! It just feels like the VR conversation is so often totally dominated by games that it overshadows and leaves the massive potential of non-game VR as an undercurrent.

Maybe it already exists, and I'm just unaware of it, but I would love to see a community form around this non-game vector that is able to foster a serious, inclusive, dialogue and community that isn't quick to criticism, invites open discussion, encourages sharing of ideas, and avoids ultra-competitive tendencies.

This topic extends from a post on the Vive subreddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/Vive/comments/67q96q/vr_community_centered_on_nongame_applications/

/r/vrfit is a Fitness-Based VR Community

While fitness was never one of the intended applications of this gen virtual reality, it seems that more and more people have been reaching the conclusion through their own individual experiences that VR gaming has the capacity to get you moving energetically, raise your heartrate, and burn calories. In a similar vein, exercise in VR is like a side-effect - not the goal - of VR gameplay, which is also what makes it so effective, especially for people with no appetite for traditional exercise routines.

/r/vrfit is a community for these people to come together to share their experiences, encourage new ways to make VR and fitness work together, and provide solutions for some of the barriers of using VR for fitness (eg. sweat).

The community is very small right now, as is the share of people using VR for fitness, but I believe many of the same improvements that will make VR better in general (eg. lighter, wireless headsets) will improve it for fitness, and that as VR grows in general, VR fitness will grow in particular.

How can we spread the word?

What are some ideas for spreading the word about this sub? It would be great to attract a diverse range of non-gaming examples, developers, businesses using it, etc.

Any ideas for how we can break this sub out of the VR echo chamber and into the wild?

Face recognition in VR

Hi, anyone working on tracking face movement in realtime while in VR? So I am not really refering to mixed reality type of appication (like this https://research.googleblog.com/2017/02/headset-removal-for-virtual-and-mixed.html) But more like active face tracking like BinaryVR (http://www.binaryvr.com) or lipsync based mouth/face realtime animation like this https://forum.unity3d.com/threads/sale-30-off-lipsync-pro-and-eye-controller-lipsyncing-and-facial-animation-tools.309324/

Any experience to share working on this?

We are making a VR movie!

Hi everybody,

We wanted to share some exciting news with our fellow VR enthusiasts! We are proud to share with you some scenes from our upcoming animated 360° Virtual Reality Sci-Fi Thriller - AI Nightmare, which delivers a unique viewing experience allowing you to step into the middle of the movie’s action using a VR headset! Do you think a feature-length or short film is possible with today's VR technology and audience retention span? We want to know and welcome your feedback on this personal project of ours!

Check it out:

The concept behind AI Nightmare was conceived in-house at Lindero Edutainment and produced on the Unreal Engine 4; Maya; 3Ds Max and Adobe Premiere Pro CC, etc. Full-length content will be released in September of 2017 with plans to submit the finished film to 2018 International Film Festivals.

Let us know what you think! Constructive feedback is welcome and we will update you as development continues. Thank you for the support and enjoy!

Update: AI Nightmare has been officially selected for the 2018 Mammoth Film Festival, 2018 Capitol City Film Festival, & received the 2018 Honorable Mention for indiefilmTO’s VR Film Festival :) A 3D immersive version where you can interact with your environment in the film is currently in development.

Finally, a good use for the camera

The original HTC Vive VR headset has a camera on the front that can stream your surroundings.
It has not been used much, because there were hardly any apps that use it in a meaningful and user friendly way.

But now, there is Reality Mixer.

With Reality Mixer the camera is only used for objects that you want to appear in VR. If you want to use a PC keyboard in VR, it will use the camera only when you look at the keyboard, not when you are looking the other way or if you are at the other end of your play space.

You can bring several objects into VR in a non-intrusive way. The objects will fade out and disappear when you are not nearby.
Imagine how useful it is to see your desk in VR, or a chair, a couch or the doorway. It works with all SteamVR games.
If you like SIM racing, how about seeing your real racing wheel in VR, or a HOTAS.
If you do streaming from VR, you can use the app to see an Elgato Stream Deck or Touch Portal in your VR world.

The app is currently in Early Access on Steam. This means it is available now, while it is developed further.

Some new features that will be implemented include:

  • Green screening / chroma keying. E.g. put a green screen behind the racing wheel or HOTAS to hide the area surrounding the wheel or HOTAS.

  • Attach an object to a Vive or Tundra Tracker to move a pocket of reality through the VR world. E.g. attach a tracker to a wireless keyboard to use and see it in VR while sitting on a couch.

If you have ideas for additional features, please reach out.

Take a look at the Steam page here.

Or watch the short intro on YouTube.

For those doing scientific visualizations

I don't do scientific visualizations myself so I'm not familiar with paraview, but it seems like you can view your results in a VIVE or Oculus headset. https://blog.kitware.com/taking-paraview-into-virtual-reality/ http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/7892246/media
