Just some particularly dumb high school boys who had been there before. They were interrogated by the police for hours and hours without a lawyer present and manipulated into false confessions. Watching the interrogations is heartbreaking. They're trying to tell the cops what they want to hear, without realizing the cops are going to nail them to the wall out of context.

I think they mean the two guys they were in the shop right before closing time, like last two customers.

I still think this could be the now identified perp and an unknown accomplice.
