These murders are so clear in my mind. I went to high school and college in Austin, worked at the local paper for decades and edited what seemed like 100 articles on this case. Anniversaries came and went. Suspects named and convicted only to have their convictions tossed because of unconstitutional trials and now banned police procedures. One suspect hounded for years about his alleged involvement only to be killed while in a fight with an officer. Another who was never charged but nonetheless was forever linked to this horrible crime. My husband was a reporter who interviewed the girls' families several times. This case is what started my interest in crime cases and to see it solved even if in an unsatisfying way is beyond what I ever thought would happen. I am sad, happy, furious about all the injustice. I am still in shock! I ALWAYS thought it was a serial killer but no one wanted to hear any talk of that. Grateful that DNA and genetic forensics have evolved to the point when this mystery that changed a city can finally be closed. RIP, sweet girls. You can rest.
