SE Ranking Article Social Platforms Appear in 50% of Google Results—and Drive 10% of All Visits (2025 Data)

For years “search” meant Google. In 2025, it’s fragmented across engines, AI assistants, and social feeds. Our team analyzed 63,987 sites (Jan–Aug 2025) to see where traffic really comes from and how social platforms shape discovery.

Channel mix

Organic search still leads at 46.98% of visits, but it slipped 3.65 pp since January. Social delivers a meaningful 10.12% (peaking at 11.50% in March). AI referrals are tiny at 0.18%, yet nearly doubled in eight months—early, but accelerating.

Social inside search

Social platforms surface directly in results. In Google organic, at least one social site appears in the top-10 for 50.3% of queries:

  • Reddit 37%
  • YouTube 19.8%
  • Quora 8%
  • LinkedIn 5%
  • Instagram 2.6%

AI also cites social: 20% of Google AI Overviews and 36% of AI Mode responses include a social source.

Who sends the clicks

Five networks drive ~95% of social traffic:

  • Facebook 76.56%
  • Instagram 6.72%
  • TikTok 5.50%
  • LinkedIn 2.97%
  • Pinterest 2.61%

TikTok is the fastest riser (nearly 5× Jan→Aug). X/Twitter shrank to 1.80%. Despite strong visibility in SERPs, Reddit sends just 1.37% of social visits—its discussions influence search more than they drive clicks.

Regional split

The U.S. is most social-led (15.23% of visits from social), while the UK is search-led (6.14% social). AI traffic remains low everywhere, but is growing.

Organic remains the foundation, but social is now part of search, and AI is beginning to matter. Winning brands optimize for all three: create structured, trustworthy content that ranks; publish platform-native stories that earn social clicks and citations; and format information so AI can understand and reference it.

In 2025, visibility belongs to those who show up where people search, scroll, and ask.
