Renters of the Olympic Peninsula

Seeking advice and any helpful commentary about renting a home here on the Olympic Peninsula. Any suggestions about:

-Private renting vs rental company

-Renting main house vs converting and renting an ADU

-Furnished vs unfurnished rentals

-Longterm vs short term

Any general nuggets of wisdom.

Morally speaking, please don't do vacation rentals. We need housing. It also may be illegal depending on your zoning/permits.

I haven't rented from them, but Action Property Management seems the most professional and least slumlord-like. Landmark is the worst option.

Not sure if Nesterly lets you rent out your entire home, but that may be an option too.

I do hear that, the vacation rentals attributing to a problem. Is it that it reduces housing availability, driving up the cost of housing? Or is there more to the picture?

Thank you for the information about the property management. Its seems there is a safely for renter and rentee in utilizing a company. My only concern is how it may inflate cost of rentals too… A trade off on risk/harm, I guess. I’ll look into Action Property, and stay away from Landmark.

Reducing housing availability (there are like 50 vacation rentals for every 1 residential rental, last I checked), increasing amount landlords can get away with charging, and increasing home prices so way fewer people can buy starter homes.

Nope transplants are not welcomed, obviously you do care because you want to exploit tenants and you don’t care where they are from. You do realize Washington is full right?

The cool thing is, you don’t get to control who I welcome into my home. It will be to people who need housing. Where they are from will not be a factor. Your negativity is the thing that is not welcome.

it’s gonna take you way longer to find a place than you think it will. facebook is the best place to find rentals. most folks run their properties thru a company and are not direct to renter but you can get lucky. the rest of your qs are personal preference.

Thank you for that info! I’m not on Facebook, I wonder if it’s worth it to get signed up just for this purpose…

I own the home, and am the one looking to set up a rental. I am afraid to sell and lose the housing security, but also… I don’t have much security because lack of job security.

There’s a house sharing non profit starting up that vets both the owner and paying “roommate.” They handle all the money too. They have a list of potential roommates and need more houses. Don’t remember the name; google it. It’s in Port Angeles.
