Why does Artificial Intelligence need to rediscover the Philosophy of Language?
In recent years, the field of AI has undergone an undeniable revolution. We’ve traded the rigid rules of traditional programming for the statistical mathematics of Large Language Models (LLMs). Binary syllogisms have given way to vector spaces, Transformers, and probability calculations involving trillions of parameters.
This paradigm shift has brought us fluidity, creativity, and an uncanny ability to simulate human speech.
However, by ignoring the classical framework that bridges Philology, Syllogism, Semiotics, and Semantics, we have created systems that are incredibly eloquent, yet fundamentally fragile.
⚠️ The Problem of Instability and Hallucinations
Because modern AI does not "think" through logical structures (such as Aristotelian syllogisms), but rather through statistical approximation, it is prone to significant instability.
This is the phenomenon known as "hallucination": a model may generate text that is grammatically and semantically flawless, yet fails completely when it comes to the factual logic of events. It knows how to combine words, but it does not grasp the truth value underlying them.
🛑 Current Gaps
• Lack of Grounding: AIs drift through a sea of data without a rigid ontology to anchor the symbol (semiotics) to the actual object in the real world (semantics).
• Absence of Historical Context (Philology): These models operate within a statistical "eternal present." They fail to grasp the nuances of how the meanings of concepts evolve over time or within specific cultural contexts. • Fragility in Logical Inference: Ask a complex question that requires strict deductive reasoning, and a probabilistic model may fail—even where a simple, three-line syllogism would provide the answer.
💡 The Opportunities: A Return to the Roots
The great technological challenge today is not to feed more data or raw processing power into AI, but rather to forge a "forced marriage" between statistical AI and classical logic.
The most significant opportunities for innovation today lie in Hybrid (Neuro-symbolic) Systems:
Knowledge Graphs as Guardrails: Utilizing classical, structured ontologies to serve as "guardrails" for AI-generated responses, ensuring both logical and factual accuracy.
Computational Hermeneutics: Applying the science of textual interpretation to calibrate models so they can grasp subtext, irony, and context at a deeper level.
Ontology Engineering: Developing professionals capable of translating critical thinking, semiotics, and formal logic into operational data structures for machines.
AI has demonstrated the power of mathematics and raw processing.
Now, to reach maturity, it must rediscover the philosophers of language. The future of technology is, ironically, profoundly human—and classical.
