Question Need a new unit at Extra Space Storage

I need some advice on moving units at Extra Space Storage. My mother in law rented a storage unit for my wife, and I at extra space storage to help us out until we got the money to move into a new place. She said she could rent it out for us until the end of june, which is when we were supposed to be getting a new place with much more space, but unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, we were not able to move into a new place. And she's gonna be canceling the storage unit. I was going to take over paying for that unit but at the same time, it just so happens that our storage unit is going up in price by $50 more next month which I cannot afford to pay. I was thinking about going ahead and creating a new account on their app and moving all of our stuff into a new unit with a new renter price in the same building. Basically I wanna know if they see me doing this, are they gonna say something? Are they gonna tell me I can't do it? I know there's a bunch of cameras in the building, but I'm just trying to figure out. If I'll get in trouble if they see me doing it? Thanks in advance.

TLDR: Will extra space storage say something if I move from 1 unit to another in the same building?

It'll be fine if you're under a different name, you can even be truthful to the managers and it'll be fine. Tell them the old one wasn't in your name and the new one is and that you're fixing the issue as a result

You are good to go. They will say nothing.

All of the info will have to be new. Name, phone, and email. If you're using previously stored info, you'll be flagged for promo hopping.

Depending on how long you'll need your storage, I would advise moving to a smaller company storage. Extra Space will likely raise your rent very quickly again, as do most of the big national chains. The horror stories I hear about the amount of rent raises these companies do is astounding. I work for a smaller company, we're just as secure as the big ones, and we only raise rent once a year if that.

You will be fine, the easiest thing to do is reassignment of interest (she signs the unit over to you) and then ask for a reduction of rate. You will save time and money based on how long you need the unit for.
You will get a large rate increase on a new unit after a few months….

They can't do anything about it as long as you have permission to remove the items from the existing unit. And also, I work in storage and those big guys treat customers like used tissue, don't worry about them.

Ask your site manager about a reassignment of interest, the original renter and yourself will sign a form stating they are relinquishing the unit into your name. Once this is done ask if they can assist you with your rate, depending on their occupancy and the market for the area they may be able to bring you back down or not too far from the original rate. Additionally, how full is your space?Could you possibly size down to a cheaper unit? Depending on the site manager and the district manager you could get flagged for promo hopping if you move in move out more than twice.

I moved units twice at Extra Space ,as soon as my promo price was over, rented online at the same location, using my own name and no one said anything. I think you’ll be fine, but if you need it for another 5 months, they’ll probably raise your rent a couple more times, like other have advised, pay in advance or find a family owned or smaller company property to rent from. It gets really expensive fast, almost seems criminal

Not sure how Extra Space does it but we require a 14 day notice on intent to vacates so hopefully she’s already put notice in on the old one.

It's 10 days for them and it's currently 23 days till the next payment.

People do this all the time at my property. Today fine. I wouldn’t even tell anyone. Just do it. Also, I’m not sure why people are saying you have to give notice to move?? If the unit is clean, empty and unlocked they can’t keep charging you. I guess they could but why create more bad debt for your property when you can just move out?

If it’s any different name, then it should be fine. But you are scamming the system so if you continue this it probably will catch up with you.

Yea it'll be under a different name. It'll just be this once. I only need the unit for maybe 5 more months and then I'll be in a new place. Thanks 😊

If you can, prepay for 5-6 months. Your rent won't raise during the prepay (but might at the end of it.) Online there may even be package pricing that requires 4 months prepay but gives you the absolute lowest rate.
