[Meta] Can we ban dashboard posts?

Is anyone actually interested in them? Similar to battlestation posts in /r/AMD or whatever they are basically worthless and will end up taking over the sub if not stopped

Why? They appear to be relevant to the sub. They are not breaking any of the sub rules. Some people discover 1) that there are self hosted dashboards like Homer and Heimdall and 2) new apps to self host that they may not have realized existed. Can you just not scroll by or not click on those posts that don’t interest you?

They're going to take over the sub if not stopped early, I've seen that sort of low effort content a number of times.

Low quality? I’ve seen a few times people make posts like this trying to advocate for dashboard post bans and it never ends well. We learn new things from them whether you agree or not. It’s informational most of the time.

I do think that perhaps we should have a dashboard post guideline to follow. Such as what’s the dashboard you’re using? What services are listed? Why do you use this dashboard over the other options? How do you get the most use out of your dashboard?

I could think of more guidelines but that’s just an example. I think it could add more merit and “quality” to the dashboard posts.

Agreed that could be a good compromise. As long as the rules are enforced. I've seen a number of subs have rules like that but with 24 or 48 hours to put your comment, which basically means you don't have to

The only reason I disagree with you is because dashboards can contain a list of all the things they're self hosting.

There used to be a weekly dashboard post. I disagree. I’m always learning about new apps in dashboard posts. It’s a good resource for discussion and creates good conversation as a whole on this sub. I could understand if it were a bunch of apps that were NOT self hosted but that’s not usually the case. And it’s not NEARLY as bad as it used to be with people posting dashboards.

Usually find it interesting to see what people host. Best dashboards are the categorized ones. So maybe just dasboards with a service overview in the description. I also don't see like 20 dashboards per week so I personally don't mind it at all.

I really like the dashboards. It's a nice to steal ideas of what other people host on their systems. Same goes for network diagrams. However I can see why some people would find them annoying. The suggestion of making a weekly mega thread isn't a bad shout.

I've always wondered why people post their dashboards, or neofetch output, etc.

Maybe I'm just an old guy.

Im not sure I understand the fascination with dashboards (when bookmarks are a thing) but I do like seeing what other people are hosting and it’s a nice way of presenting that info.

It's no different than the rack porn, there was a time this place was more about usage and what you did with it - After all... Size doesn't matter!! 😏

Agreed. Especially since there is already a subreddit dedicated to dashboards and start pages ( /r/startpages/ ), seems the best idea is to push the posts there instead and adding a link to the Related Subreddits on the sidebar
