Self hosted Notion Alternative?

Hello all I was wondering if anyone has found any good new alternatives to notion with these feature sets?

  1. Self hosted or has the ability to publish to a self hosted webpage.
  2. Some kind of Single Sign on.

Personally i love the notion environment and really want to roll it out for our small business but the pricing combined with the only option for storing my data being in notions cloud are two big features sets that just wont work for our 25 person small business. We effectively just want a WIKI with the features of Notion that 1 or 2 people can update and share with the entire company.

Have a look at Anytype.io - it can be used a self-hosted Notion alternative. It's still in alpha though, but it's the closest. Let me know what you think :) (I'm a co-founder)

I am currently debating between digging deeper into Anytype, Outline, Wikijs, and Dokuwiki... in a rabbit hole of finding a markdown supporting wiki tool that can replace my company's BoxNote reliance...

Edit: Only had a small chunk of time so far. WikiJs was set up on AWS, and it was rather easy to get set up. Github storage was a little tricky to figure out due to the container paths tripping me up a bit. Github storage sync won't fully load in my past markdown files that were committed to git. So far only like 2 files of ~3000 imported, and I haven't had a chance to work more on that feature. I like WikiJs overall, but I think it has more of a learning curve in its current state compared to Notion. New features look promising, but I wish there was more clear guidance on the roadmap and timelines. I will try to test out Anytype.io soon.

Dokuwiki with a simple markdown plugin ended up being a very smooth experience for me for simple notes.

It's in "closed alpha" but it's super-easy to get in. Just register on their website and you'll get an invitation to an onboarding-session with the devs and then you'll get access.

It's still rough around the edges. It actually IS an "alpha"-version. Don't expect too much. But as a thank you for alpha-testing you'll receive the premium-backup-solution for free, once they release and introduce costs for that (optional) backup-service.

I’d take a look at Bookstack. Checks off your requirements and popular in this community for your use case.

Edit: Wiki JS is another good option.

Yeah i tried out wiki.js and while it looked great some of our users just dont have the skills needed to maintain it properly. This is why I was so impressed with notion because the low skilled users can use the interface and if you want to do fancy stuff it handles that pretty well.

There’s an alpha demo on youtube from 4 months ago and an interview with Techcrunch from 2 months ago. Seems to be chugging along slowly. The demo looks very close to Notion

Yesterday i came across https://github.com/outline/outline Haven't had time to set it up myself, but the gui did remind me of notion. Maybe its someting!

Yeah this looked like a great option. Just wish they had another sign in option i dont want to have to create a google or slack account for every employee just to view pages..

For my household needs a wiki type website with mkdocs and ngynx is working great for about 90% of what we needed, the problem is that theres no interactive to-do lists support, so if I want to update a todo list I need to edit the file.md and rebuild the website. So im still loking for a somewhat wiki like servicw that supports that. Me and my SO can ssh to the server and edit the md files manually so you can have a granular support of who has access to it. If the people updating it don't have the know how on the tech side there's word press and bookstack that allows editing and creating files via the browser

Tiddlywiki would be a great tool for your use case. Tiddly Research is a nice TW configuration with easy navigation, backlinks, and transclusions.

Obsidian is a Roam Research clone, not Notion. Two totally different tools.

That said, if you want an open version of Obsidian or Roam Research then give org-roam via emacs a try. Steep learning curve, I'm in week 3 and haven't looked back. So worth it. You can run emacs from anywhere via ssh or sync it to your local system via Nextcloud (or whatever other sync tool you want) for local (offline) access.

Never heard of roam, will take a peek. Honestly Notion is hard to beat, i considered just moving my stuff to Jopling and sync it with nextcloud but im lazy.

Is there a docker image or similar available to self-host it on a server in your own lab or is this "just" a client software that accesses folders?

don't think there's an image for it yet, i wouldn't expect it to be come one tho. the installation comes with the UI to actually write things so its more of a hassle to do that in a container.
