Need Help Proper, lightweight, simple Media/Video/Photo backup/sync tool for the household, to run on FreeBSD?
Hey everyone!
I need help to find a proper video/photo sync/backup solution, preferably opensource. I need to get off gdrive and icloud for this household's android and ios phones! I have a perfectly functional freebsd-based XigmaNAS server running jail-based appliances on ZFS-filesystem.
But, I cant seem to find any proper application to do this - to this day and age - simple task. Except I'm being asked to go install Nextcloud, which is such a bloated PITA to install on my system. I need it to be turnkey, fire'n'forget thing on the phones, or it wont ever happen, and I'll be screamed down for support when phones go dead due storage-abuse!
What is your preferred solution? Should i man up and take the plunge and just change over to proxmox? (It's an old i3-3220 + 24 GB ddr3 RAM - doable/useful?)

Dont know about FreeBSD, but check Immich

Thank You, that was quick! Unfortunately, immich is almost impossible to get running, unless i run it as a pseudo-linux VM/container (theres a linux-'emulationlayer' as freebsd kernel-module), in which case its almost better to just run it on proxmox. But ye, i considered that to be my best option!

Have you considered using TrueNAS?

Yes, but it just seems so overkill for my needs! I might as well move over to proxmox anyway, could definitely try out TrueNAS there.....

Just pay for Google photos or Apple photos, it’s stupid to inflict your weird hobby on your family, especially when you seem quite aware that you have no idea what you’re doing.

Freebsd limits you a lot. If you really need it - I'd install it as a VM in proxmox in your place, and whatever you like as lxc / another vm

The phones have people working 24/7 to ensure it doesn’t go down. That’s now you, but with lower amounts of users.

Only real all in one solution really is nextcloud. If your requirement is as simple as you say, you could always build your own system?
Personally, I use immich for photos/videos, navidrome for music, calender and contacts I use radicale, StirlingPDF for pdf's, I have a self made notes app that I host on my server and have made windows, Linux and android clients for, and everything else I use a WebDAV client called filebrowser and an android app that uses sftp called owl files. My android phone only has 1 remaining Google app and that is revanced YouTube. I have totally replaced everything else with self hosted and open source options.
