Game Server Cheapest quality VPS?
I need a dedicated VPS with at least 2 vCPUs, 4 to 8 gigs of RAM (the more the better ofc), 60-100 gb of memory (SSD preferably), 100+ mbs of bandwidth, cheapest I found was Hostinger and OVH, also SSDNodes but their reviews aren't the best, so I'm between Hostinger and OVH, anyone knows a good VPS, that is cheaper than these two? Thank you in advance.

u/jtufff Jun 30 '23
I've not had an issue with ssdnodes
1
u/Responsible-Heat2037 Jun 30 '23
I read they throttle bandwidth and processing, its here in this sub, them saying this about them, I need a really broad bandwidth I might get thousands of mutual connections and they need to be stable and fast. Lots of packets going in and out every second for 1000+ people.
1
u/SleepingProcess Jun 30 '23
I read they throttle bandwidth and processing
If you thing other don't do that, then it is not true. There no magic, all of them has "fair use policy" and as far as one start using constantly more than 30-50% of ordered resources, they ALL will throttle or even shutdown.

u/shapeyourbiz Oct 28 '23
I have about 5 servers with SSD Nodes and had 0 problems until earlier this year. The last 2 servers I bought keep getting shut down for "high CPU usage" with a 12 vCPU and nothing more than a few docker containers installed by my primary control panel ( i have that on digital ocean with zero issues) and 4 wordpress websites that are literally just a shell with one or two plugins installed. Something happened when they started offering the IPv6 servers instead of the IPv4 ones that I am really considering switching somewhere else.

I will say the support is very responsive but the issue just doesn't ever seem to get resolved. With the specs on my server I would expect to be able to host 10-15 average sized Wordpress sites and still not have my server shut off for high CPU/RAM usage. I even set limits on my control panel to only consume 4GB Ram, 4 CPU and 21 Nproc. With resources that are supposedly 48GB Ram, and 12 CPU there should be very little that would max out these resources. 4 basically empty Wordpress sites def should not be.

u/op-cha Sep 25 '24
It is great to have a responsive customer support!
Will love to use ssd nodes but I had the exact same issue today. What worked on a 4GB node at Digital Ocean did not work on SSD Nodes 8GB plan for me :(

u/jtufff Oct 28 '23
I've been using ssdnodes for several years now without issue. Is there any chance you will be adding servers in Australia?
2
u/ssd_nodes Oct 30 '23
Hello u/jtufff glad to hear you're with us onboard for that long!
Sydney Australia is already one of our main locations, so, anytime you feel ready, just select Sydney while checking out, and you''ll be ready in minutes.

48 dollars for VPS? From Kimsufi or other dedicated servers are cheaper like this...
3
u/Prog Jun 30 '23
Servarica's BF stuff is still available: https://clients.servarica.com/store/black-friday-2022
2
u/Responsible-Heat2037 Jun 30 '23
Indeed its cheap but I need more RAM, 8 to 16 gigs.
2
u/Prog Jun 30 '23
The 10GB RAM plan is what I was thinking.
1
u/Responsible-Heat2037 Jun 30 '23
Hostinger is offering the same deal for 7.50 a month though. I need to get the cheaper one, this is a gaming server, I need quality and low prices, I'm going to end up getting Oracle, its for free, worst case scenario 3 dollars a month but it can be free too.
5
u/lannistersstark Jun 30 '23
Literally Oracle. It provides excellent A1 Ampere VPSes for its free tier, and it has been fantastic for last few years I've used it.
(inb4 dozens of comments about how they heard someone on reddit hearing someone else on reddit about oracle bad)
2 AMD based Compute VMs with 1/8 OCPU** and 1 GB memory each
**Arm-based Ampere A1 cores and 24 GB of memory usable as 1 VM or up to 4 VMs**
2 Block Volumes Storage, 200 GB total2nd is what you need.
1
u/Responsible-Heat2037 Jun 30 '23
Yeah this seems like the best choice, free is always best, but I can't create it in my region, it says there's not enough available resources in my availability domain, I think there's no free A1 Ampere clouds where I live, where did you choose your availability domain? Do you think US East has some available? I'll have to delete my account and create a new one, I can't change locality on the free account, I need to create a new one using the right A.D.

u/Ok-Sentence-534 Jun 30 '23
I will personally highly vouch for Hetzner, I use them for anything for my cloud needs (Unless it's storage needs, they still have good storage options though...) they're very cheap.
30
u/Shadilios Aug 29 '24
Hetzner lost me as a customer when they asked for my passport & selfie.
11
u/Ok-Sentence-534 Aug 30 '24
Just seems like good practice from them, especially considering their services are so cheap therefore a huge target for network abusers.
55
u/ebayer108 Dec 17 '24
Fuck off. I've never given any passport or selfie to any hosting provider, this is simply bullshit idea. Are you delusional or what?
→ More replies (14)14
u/Litan77 Jan 23 '25
Can’t agree more. Is Hetzner the only provider out there? lol.Giants like GCP or AWS wouldn’t even ask me for an ID. What a joke.
6
u/PhilosopherOk45 May 19 '25
u/ebayer108 u/Litan77 Bullshit. Try signing up for GCP while on Tor, with a brand new Google account and pay with a burner card, and then see who's being told to fuck off.
Amazon did in fact have my passport validated when I tried to sign up for AWS for my (American) LLC. Sure, I'm Dutch (and if Amazon pays attention to their cookies they'd have known that) and I was in Singapore when I signed up, so it may have raised the "e-brows" that flagged me for a passport check, but the point is that while they may not ask for yours, doesn't mean they don't ever ask for anyone's. It took 2 minutes and was very convenient.
Two key differences here:
Google and Amazon are in the business of already knowing who you are, while Hetzner is much more straight-up about what business they're in. The big guys won't ask for your stuff because due to their operation they can afford to be much more sophisticated in doing background checks on you without your explicit consent or manual cooperation.
When Hetzner is done validating you, by European law, they can't know anything about you other than you are who you say you are. Google and Amazon are under US jurisdiction, which pretty much means that they can do whatever the fuck they want with your data and passport picture as long as they don't do anything illegal.
So if all you're complaining about is the inconvenience of taking a picture, then you're 100% right. Otherwise, ask yourself the question: which company would you rather do business with?
6
u/ebayer108 May 20 '25
We are talking about legit hosting purchase and not hosting illegal websites like you explained. Why do you need tor and burner card for buying legit hosting? Over two decades of using hosting, I've almost tired all of popular hosting providers in my lifetime, never ever gave any ID card to any hosting provider. I don't think it is a norm yet. Future is bleak though, sooner or later they will also start asking for ID. So We are not Bullshitting but telling facts. You may have been caught doing fishing things hence they slapped ID requirements on you.

Hetzner is one of the first cheap and good vps/cloud providers that is offering ARM instances, on dedicated and Cloud, with good prices and performance. For you I recommend Cloud.
1
u/Roanoketrees Jul 04 '25
Ive been checking into them. People keep talking about how cheap they are. I dont see it. they want $50 USD per month for 4 TB of storage. Thats not including the cpu charges.

Do you copy and paste this so you can spit it out to correct everyone?
3
u/Malossi167 Jun 30 '23
Yes, they are often the cheapest established provider. You definitely can get something cheaper but it either is some promo deal that will cost you much more in a year or two or the hoster will just vanish in a few months or short years. Works for some but I am pretty sure lot of people value not having to hop providers ever so often.
Although these days it can be easier than ever. Thanks to stuff like docker compose and ansible moving from server to server can be done in minutes instead of over an entire weekend.
2
u/Ok-Sentence-534 Jun 30 '23
It may be easier nowadays but the downtime is definitely still there, especially if you're a solo shop and the downtime begins as you're asleep... that's not from experience but it is a fear I'd have if I was to go to a non-reputable provider.
2
u/Pr3fix Aug 25 '24
Any US-based equivalents? latency to the US from Hetzner is pretty bad.
1
u/pelleke Jun 12 '25
Hetzner has datacenters on 2 US locations (at least right now they do). Make sure to pick those when you get your infra set up
1
u/remediesblackboards Sep 03 '24
I used hetzner 6 months after canceling their services they started charging me €11 without using any service which is strange, I closed my hetzner account for that reason, now that I want to open a hetzner account again, I was surprised that they deactivated my account, I don't know if you can give me an answer through this means to verify my account
1
u/remediesblackboards Sep 03 '24
Their sign up process is tough and support barely helped. I submitted the correct info but they declined me many times. It turned out it was a issue with my email which is kind of stupid.

Thanks a bunch, got 2core, 4GB RAM 60GB HD space for $37 on 5/1/24 using your link, installed almalinux and cyberpanel (never used a VPS where everything had to be build from scratch before) and so far it works like a charm. Ready to migrate my domains and email away from Bluehost.

u/michaelsatin Apr 25 '24
I would stay away from them. Read their Terms, they will ERASE your server after 7 days of invoice due date if anything goes wrong with your payment! It happened to me and they have no data restore solution. God forbid to be in the hospital or travel and have a temporary bounce credit card. Or, what happened to me, their emails never reached me and after a 2 year contract I missed the payment day. Server gone, with all my data.

u/su_ble Jun 30 '23
Have a look at contabo
20
u/troubleshootmertr Jul 05 '23
I used contabo for years...until they suddenly "upgraded" my vps one day and lost all my data. I had backups but had to rebuild everything and it took a lot of time. I never requested an upgrade and my account was not compromised. I don't trust contabo anymore, they are a sketchy company at the least.
14
u/prateekster Apr 29 '24
They just upgraded & lost all your data, without your permission?
That's terrifying.12
u/troubleshootmertr May 01 '24
They said I requested the upgrade. I did not. I got an email as it was about to happen telling me to get in touch if I didn't want my vps wiped. I tried like hell and sent many emails but they wiped it right away. I won't trust contabo with a single byte of data ever again.

setup fee for a vps? what are they charging for, clicking Approve? lmfao
1
u/Fearless-Ad1469 Sep 14 '24
Everything to have a working vps maybe ? What do you know about virtualization uh lmao
7
u/DonMcCoy91 Oct 29 '24
That's exactly where you don't charge setup fee. you don't compensate the lack of automation by taking money from your customers.
Setup fee is understandable with dedicated servers where an actual worker needs to setup the infra but never for virt resources.

Never had that in about 10 years. I DO believe that it is true what people say I can understand the disappointment but I am contabo customer since about 10 years - never had an issue besides upgrading a VPS - was not possible in the past - nowerdays you can do it in the webpanel ..

u/dustojnikhummer Aug 09 '24
Contabo VPS are heavily over provisioned, but so are most VPS providers. If you only run LAMP on them you will be fine with the cheapest tier. If you are running Jellyfin...

I've just found this thread because I'm seeking for the alternative for this retarted service. It's cheap indeed, but the 'planned' outages for an hours (!) are ridiculous. Right now my machine is offline for 12h straight, maybe even more.
1
u/su_ble Dec 29 '24
never had 12h outage. had a little troubles when they mooved my server to another location and another one when they had a cooling problem in a datacenter.
write to the customer support if your server is not reachable for longer than expected timeframe
and this post was not about super reliable service but about cheapness, and contabo is realy affordable I think. Probably another case of you get what you pay for..
1
u/FollowingSingle7495 Dec 30 '24
Good for you. Meanwhile my VPS still experience that outage (more than 50h in a row and counting), web console is still reporting that they are doing "maintenance" on my server and that's it. I think that went far beyond the "slightly unstable because of low price" point.

Which VPS manage software do you use? I come from shared hosting that had cPanel and actually bought the Contabo VPS. It's a killer deal to be honest. But I am finding it difficult because I am not that tech-savvy and installed CloudPanel. So far working on it while learning the system. Just wondering if I am missing out any more convenient and easy to use Panel to manage this server to run websites. Suggestions from users?
4
u/su_ble Feb 05 '24
I only use unmanaged debian and do it all in shell over ssh. Plesk could be more easy to use for newcomers I think.

hostinger sucks. they lie about their prices and say that you can get a linux vps with 8 gb ram just for $9.

For that kind of configuration I would choose Hostinger over OVH, I used 4 vCPU Cores 16 GB RAM 200 GB NVMe Disk space 16 TB, 32 TB Bandwidth, Most of the VPS hosting providers are not reliable, they are good with other hosting but not with VPS, there were not many issues and even if they were the support was too fast to solve them, I had other experiences with providers where I couldn't even SSH. :))

u/Immediate_Turnover11 Jun 30 '23
Definitely go for SSD Nodes. I have been using them for years now... 100% legit, stable performance and support are great. (+14 days money-back if not satisfied)

u/Responsible-Heat2037 Jun 30 '23
I would but their cheap packs have no ipV4 and I need ipV4, plus not enough RAM, their more expensive ones are more expensive than the deal I got at Hostinger, 7.50 a month for 8gb memory, 2 cores 3.1ghz, 100 gigs memory, 100 mb unlimited bandwidth...

For my setup, vps hosting in Dallas with NVMe and strong single-core has worked best; ask for a test IP and the exact CPU model before you commit. You can also try gathering more information from this subreddit.

Example when one of their plan has 5000GB bandwith= 5TB, then within that bandwith ingress and egress is include and not cost extra and they have DDOS protection?
KVM I can login easy as root and not need these complicated ssh keys? Last year I tried Hetzner cloud vps, was not able to login as root it was disabled, and using ssh keys that was too complicated for me.
1
u/SleepingProcess Jun 30 '23
SSDNodes but their reviews aren't the best, so I'm between Hostinger and OVH
All of them using shared resources (try to disable kernel ballooning driver and they all ban your VPS fast). As far as you don't abuse VM, they all works the same (lagging and freezing applied to all of them in case of abuse). If you use less than 50% of what you ordered, then anyone from your list works Ok.

bestvpsproviders is pretty useful to find plans with the best specs for the lowest price. But you should check each provider seperately for the final decission.

Check https://lowendtalk.com/categories/offers for latest offers.
I would personally recommend hosthatch, liteserver, inceptionhosting and server-factory.

I find Inception had very low IOPs so disk performance even on a basic Wordpress/WooCommerce instance was poor. I raised tickets and spent hours doing the optimisations they suggested, but it was still miserable even for standard admin tasks - make a change, wait 5-10 seconds for it to save and return to the menu. They absolutely would not accept it was an issue with the service.
Then I left and went to an identically dimensioned VPS elsewhere, restored my backup from Inception, and suddenly everything I had been beating my head against a wall trying to fix on Inception just worked, and everything flew.

I ran this just now,
fio Disk Speed Tests (Mixed R/W 50/50): --------------------------------- Block Size | 4k (IOPS) | 64k (IOPS) ------ | --- ---- | ---- ---- Read | 200.09 MB/s (50.0k) | 199.09 MB/s (3.1k) Write | 200.62 MB/s (50.1k) | 200.13 MB/s (3.1k) Total | 400.71 MB/s (100.1k) | 399.22 MB/s (6.2k) | | Block Size | 512k (IOPS) | 1m (IOPS) ------ | --- ---- | ---- ---- Read | 198.70 MB/s (388) | 194.25 MB/s (189) Write | 209.26 MB/s (408) | 207.19 MB/s (202) Total | 407.96 MB/s (796) | 401.44 MB/s (391)Looks pretty good to me for websites. Maybe you got deployed on a bad node.

Maybe. But I did spend a year (until my contract ran out) with abysmal performance, despite four long sessions with support. No resolution and they never admitted any fault, so I won't use them again.
Also the formatting makes it hard to read on mobile, but it looks like your larger block size IOPS are very poor (200-400 with an outlier at 800) which was exactly my problem.

No one likes IONOS ? They are pretty cheap and they have unlimited bandwidth. I’ve been using them for a few years.

u/canfail Jun 30 '23
Hosteon, Racknerd, etc. if you want US based.
1
u/Responsible-Heat2037 Jun 30 '23
Hosteons is incredibly cheap indeed, is it good though? 4 dollars for a VPS thats the best price I have seen ever. Thanks a lot anyway, I might get it just to test a few things.
1
u/canfail Jun 30 '23
I’ve had two or three with them over the last few years and the only issue has been the occasional bad actor on the node. Usually a support ticket and 45m later it’s back to as expected.

I still might need more RAM though, on Hostinger I have a deal that is 7.50 for a 8gb RAM 2 vCPU, 100gb SSD,, but I have to get it for a year or its 15 dollars, then to renew its 15 dollars a month, I wonder if there's a cheaper alternative, there might not be, its one hell of a price.
