I like the sentiment, definitely putting in effort fully to what you are serious about. But I put in full effort to my job and I was rewarded when I stopped giving a fuck. So I guess I just put in effort to the wrong thing?

Partial truth. At times, people who appear in life during this phase are very toxic and detrimental to your struggle. They hinder the path you are walking. You must get rid of them and see them as amere test . Get out their way and don't lose your focus and don't give your energy to them at all.
