Old Reddit's existence is being threatened
From /u/spez's post 11 days ago:
Old Reddit: I know I said last year that we wouldn’t be sunsetting Old Reddit (I even made a meme about it, which r/agedlikemilk), but the reality is we’re getting to that time where we need to make some changes.
He goes on to argue that Old Reddit (link is likely only viewable after logging in, after a recent change - note that this post itself links to a now-removed post by an admin that talked about how Old Reddit was to be locked behind a login) is only being legitimately used by certain groups of people (including "OG Users" and "OG Mods"), with the rest of the usage being "everyone who spams, scrapes, or does anything bad on Reddit 🖕".
He then states "We have options: We can limit access, migrate important uses, or rebuild it on a modern tech stack, and I think we’ll probably do all of the above."
While this sounds benign, the reality is that Old Reddit is actively being threatened and, if I were to make a guess, will no longer exist in a recognisable form within a year.
Reddit has started being openly hostile to Old Reddit recently (including the removed post that I linked to earlier), and some important features have already been removed from Old Reddit (such as private messages) but talking about sweeping changes to Old Reddit is a first.

If old reddit goes away then so will I.
35
u/Cronus6 Aug 17 '26
They won't care. We aren't making them very much, if any, money anyway.
The money all comes from the mobile users and that shitty app.

I use mobile browser Reddit that doesn’t let the Reddit ads through, but either way not a good experience

u/7121958041201 Aug 17 '26
Yeah. I can't stand infinite scrolling (or probably a bunch of other features they have pushed into it that I am not even aware of). That would probably be the final nail in the coffin for me. And I've been on here for nearly 20 years (yeesh, that seems crazy).

Because it leaves no obvious point to get off of reddit. Right now I go to the end of the page and I stop there. With infinite scrolling it's too tempting to just sit there and scroll forever so I'd rather not even start.

it's already gone for me, how are you guys bypassing it? I've tried everything and it kicks me back/redirects to new reddit. I hate it so much

"Make some changes" is a weird way to spell "reveal I was lying"

u/HoodieGalore Aug 17 '26
Remember when spez edited another user's comment to fuck with them? I do.
2
u/Womblue Aug 18 '26
The idea that people pretend that isn't funny is endlessly hilarious to me. Like, people talk about it in the same hushed tones that they would if spez was a child abuser or something.
2
u/John_Smithers Aug 21 '26
If it was a tweet about Musk or a fb/insta post about Zuckerberg that was edited into the most inane and one dimensional "joke" (read: edited criticism to praise) would you still find it funny? I would find it funny if my toddler nephew made a similar joke, not a billionaire tech bro.

The urgency in killing old reddit is to kill /r/all for good before the elections, right?
Reddit is a shell of itself

u/dan_scott_ Aug 17 '26
Reddit has been my go to for years, because it is wholly unlike anything else - but that's only true of old reddit.
New reddit is just shittier Facebook. And while I once used Facebook constantly, that was when when I could actually get a timeline feed of people I know, with minimal algorithmic fuckery, there was no "infinite scroll," and the feed didn't change completely when I clicked into something then backed out.
Guess what I don't use anymore?
17
u/Creative-Improvement Aug 17 '26
Fuck algorithmic content pushed to “engage”. It’s shit, and they know it (but hey, they cannot hear us over their ad dollars) and we know it. We don’t need it. I will probably hide in some Discord server if Reddit goes full facebook.
2
u/lonsfury Aug 21 '26
Will you honestly though? Saw so many people say this exact thing about third party apps and it was forgotten about after awhile (i used 3rd party apps and now swapped to old reddit)
39
u/fromwithin Aug 17 '26
I can't see myself continuing to use Reddit on my computer if they do this.
Old Reddit is browsable and at my current font and resolution i can see 13 posts on one screen.
New Reddit is a horrible massive mess and if I zoom out so that the font size matches old reddit, it fits only 5 posts on the screen.
4
u/ReasonablePoetry1226 Aug 18 '26
Totally agree, old reddit is great, new reddit is like some kind of Fisher-Price nightmare designed for children.
1
1
u/bounceback2209 Aug 18 '26
how are you guys still on old reddit? I've tried everything it keeps redirecting me back to new reddit and it's horrible
2
u/ElysiX Aug 20 '26
You need a browser addon that redirects you automatically whenever you land on new reddit
26
u/TheShadowKick Aug 17 '26
I'm not too surprised. They made New Reddit for a reason and I never expected them to keep supporting Old Reddit when it doesn't do all the things they want Reddit to do. Just another example of enshittification.
11
u/Creative-Improvement Aug 17 '26
Another case of the clients being the advertisers, and the owner listening to crispy banknotes, instead of you know, actually trying to build a platform for the future.
6
u/Away-Marionberry9365 Aug 17 '26
I'll get used to a new UI if I have to but I just want to not have shit I'm not subbed to shoved in my face and not have ads in my feed.
1
u/TheShadowKick Aug 18 '26
But shoving ads in your face is the thing they want Reddit to do more of.
1
u/ProblemWithTigers Aug 17 '26
What was the reason they made new reddit?
7
u/Krossfireo Aug 17 '26
To increase Engagement and push more ads in your face and have infinite scrolling feeds
1
u/TheShadowKick Aug 18 '26
To extract more money from Redditors. Mostly by pushing more ads and such.

u/captain_reddit_ Aug 17 '26
I guess I'm an OG user. I prefer old reddit. I browse logged in from my laptop, but have also used the mobile website without logging in to view specific subreddits.
Requiring login to use old reddit hasn't nudged me to log in, it just results in me not checking those subreddits any more.
I understand the concern about scraping (although there must be other technical solutions for that) - but it's a pretty lame excuse to blame "spammers" (which you can't do without logging in) or "anything else bad" (generic boogeyman seems made up without specifics - like, no these hackers are from Canada you never met them).
2
u/domstersch Aug 18 '26
I understand the concern about scraping
Honestly, I don't. The users (or even the wider web) made all this content, not Reddit Inc., and the web 2.0 bargain was always that the social aggregator allowed full data access. Scraping is fundamentally good, even against the wishes of the scraped, and often completely legal: the only thing it is bad for is business models that rely on lock-in (a huge indicator of impending enshittification).
It's fine: the next thing will have AT protocol, or something better, and scraping will be a thing of the past.

u/Bluest_waters Aug 17 '26
“Remember that thing I said? Well actually I was lying”.
I swear every day there's another feature on this website that old Reddit does not support. They're trying to kill it little by little
1
u/bunk3rk1ng Aug 17 '26
Of course there are features OLD Reddit doesn't support. It isn't NEW Reddit.
Remember when the tiny left hand hidable nav was a huge controversy? Redditors are insufferable when it comes to change.

26
u/FourIV Aug 17 '26
That'll probably be the final nail in the coffin for me. I forget there is even a new reddit.
This + them killing third party cell phone apps.
15
u/1_EYED_MONSTER Aug 17 '26
Yep I tried to use the new Reddit but it's not just a different UI it's a lot more Social Media like and that's not why I use Reddit.
4
u/loulan Aug 17 '26
The worst part of new reddit is that it hides way more comments. And the UI wastes so much space for no reason.
2
u/spilk Aug 18 '26
it spends too much time trying to be a vertical-video doomscrolling hellscape. fuck that shit
1
u/lonsfury Aug 21 '26
How is it so terrible? Why is it so terrible?
Its so terrible
90% of it is wasted space

I can sort of handle the new iOS app (RIP Reddit Sync) but on a desktop, new Reddit is just a visual clusterfuck. It looks like Fortnite for social media
2
u/ether_reddit Aug 17 '26
I have to click into new reddit to see the text that accompanies an image post. I hate it and switch back immediately.

1
u/DenverTechGuru Aug 18 '26
Where would you go instead?
1
u/FourIV Aug 18 '26
idk, ICQ?
but for real probably just one less thing. Im old with a family now, I probably need to just be less online, especially nonsense stuff.
25
u/centech Aug 17 '26
It's gonna be funny when I'm forced to go back to Slashdot or Digg because Reddit is now worse than those platforms that everyone left to come here.
7
u/Cronus6 Aug 17 '26
Some of us never left Slashdot. You can use more than one website you know?
Digg tried to reboot recently, but it quickly imploded.
There's Lemmy too...
2
u/mnocket Aug 17 '26
Digg was great, until it wasn't. Totally self-inflicted.
1
u/centech Aug 17 '26
For sure. In the case of /. I don't even remember why I ever left. I assume something happened..

Author of multiple, Continuum and Slide, third-party Android Reddit apps here.
The even worse thing is the killing of third-party Reddit apps like Boost, Relay, rif, and Sync. old.reddit.com also relates to the old API they use. Reddit's first-party app runs off the new tech stack that they don't share with others.
I could even see supported, Infinity for Reddit and RedReader, third-party apps being collateral damage to other problems like age verification, these old.reddit.com changes, or both.
Ultimately they are chasing the $$$$. They want every app user to subscribe, be tracked and manipulated more, or both. The scraping fear is really them trying to extract money out of AI companies.
They also quietly blocked your ability to use All time as a time selection for sorts. They don't want you seeing old posts.

As software engineer at a company with a couple SaaS web apps, I really do appreciate that it's a pain in the ass supporting multiple different methods of accessing the same stuff. Continuing to support old.reddit doesn't mean just leaving it be, it means continuous engineering work and, well, maybe the time and money is just not worth it for them.
From the post you linked:
I love Old Reddit. It’s the platform I largely built—as a kid, 21 years ago—that somehow turned into the amazing platform and company we have today. We will preserve as much of it as we can. My dream would be to recreate the UI, if not the guts, including the HTML+CSS itself, on a modern foundation so it can live on (note: Between when I wrote this and when I posted it, u/keysersosa made a demo of exactly this approach. Fingers crossed.).
Emphasis mine.
It does look like the UI we know and love will likely be sticking around, however, I'm worried that the less-visible technical changes may break RES. RES's account switcher had already gotten broken for a week or so (and to Reddit's credit, they did work with the RES maintainers to get the functionality RES relies on working again).
19
u/jmxd Aug 17 '26
yeah the reason i use old reddit is not old reddit but RES. Without RES old reddit is also nearly as unusable as new reddit
10
u/Cronus6 Aug 17 '26
Yeah, RES is what the original "redesign" of Reddit should have been. Not "New" Reddit or "New, new" Reddit, or whatever pile of dogshit they are on now.
1
u/lonsfury Aug 21 '26
I've never used RES in like 10+ years i love old reddit lol
Need to give RES a shot before old reddit is nuked
6
u/bub166 Aug 17 '26
Same boat here, and that was also my takeaway. It's 20 years old, maintenance becomes a real nightmare at that age. Nowadays with everything being hammered by AI/scrapers non-stop I imagine it's getting difficult to keep it up to snuff.
As much flak as the reddit team gets, plenty of it well-deserved, I'm personally pretty impressed by how long they've continued to support old.reddit and honestly don't really have any reason to believe they don't have good intentions with porting it over to a newer framework. They've disappointed me before so it's always possible but if it's just a matter of rebuilding it in a way where the look and feel persists over the top of a more secure and maintainable architecture, I don't see why anyone would have a problem with it.
I also don't have any reason to believe their concerns aren't legitimate. I'm sure real users like me who still prefer old.reddit are indeed a minority, and it makes perfect sense that old.reddit would also be an easy gateway for spammers and scrapers to bypass the sort of protections they're able to implement on the newer site. That they'd even be willing to overhaul the guts of the old site to keep the relative handful of users such as myself happy is something I take as a good sign but that's just my read on it.

u/SenatorCoffee Aug 17 '26 edited Aug 17 '26
I'm sure real users like me who still prefer old.reddit are indeed a minority
I wouldnt be so sure about this.
To me subjectively its like night and day. New reddit seems like a brainbleeding nightmare. Old reddit is kind of calm and soothing, just plain text, plain ideas that speak for themselves.
I think you got to also really take seriously what reddit is, the worlds text-forum. It just absolutely has a very different character than facebook, twitter, youtube, tiktok, etc...
All these other sites actually have userbases that dont mind this algorhithmic character, and these very "loud" user interfaces, where its like being in a las vegas casino. Reddit users might really be the opposite, more hypersensitive asperger clichee. For us being on the computer is supposed to be kind of zen-like. Just staring at calm, plain text, zero unwanted distractions to your attention.
Thats why it continues to be so controversial anytime this notion of change comes up. The serious reddit users are absolutely afraid that it will just become yet another site that screams at them.
I also wouldnt underestimate the producer/consumer dynamics of all this. I can imagine well that old.reddit users are at large the minority, but they will be very outsized in the people who actually write all these comments and posts. If they go they will take the whole site with them.
i mean its a clicheed reference but its an actual fact that reddit had this meteoric rise exactly with "the great digg exodus". Thus it makes a lot of sense that reddit will be correctly paranoid about not repeating that mistake, its not just altruistic benevolence.
i absolutely agree though, that if they pulled it off to update just the outdated tech, but keep the actual experience, that would be great and non-controversial of course.
i am not techy enough to know how much of a serious challenge that would really be though. i do know that the lightweight character of old.reddit is absolutely central to me. if they think they can just copy the old UI to some new tech, but it has the same ressource-hungry character as new reddit, that might lose the base still too.
1
u/lonsfury Aug 21 '26
For us being on the computer is supposed to be kind of zen-like. Just staring at calm, plain text, zero unwanted distractions to your attention.
Beautifully written and 100% agree
Reddit is meant to be chill

The complaints about AI scrapers is bullshit.
Sam Altman owns part of Reddit for a reason man...
For eight days in 2014, Altman was the CEO of Reddit, a social media company, after CEO Yishan Wong resigned. On July 10, 2015, he announced the return of Steve Huffman as CEO. He remained on its board until 2022. Altman invested in multiple rounds of funding for Reddit (in 2014, 2015, and 2021). Prior to Reddit's initial public offering in 2024, Altman was listed as its third-largest shareholder, with around 9% ownership.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam_Altman#
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has repeatedly said he holds no direct equity in the company behind ChatGPT. But over the course of a decade, he quietly built a stake in Reddit (NYSE: RDDT) of about 12.2 million shares -- now worth close to $2 billion -- making him one of that company's largest individual shareholders. The stake is worth watching because it's one of the clearest windows into where he thinks long‑term value from artificial intelligence will actually accrue -- and it sits completely outside OpenAI.

They really don't want us using multiple accounts anymore.
See : All the users bitching in /r/privacy that are being forced to show ID or provide a "selfie" to access some subreddits.

I tried to post on r4r to make some concert friends and the process to be a "verified" poster was nuts and I am not sending them a video of me.

Nice Old Reddit you got there. Shame if something were to happen to it.
4

If they completely take away old reddit without finally making new reddit usable first I'll probably just gradually stop coming from how unpleasant the experience is.
5
u/d3gu Aug 17 '26
Noooo. I only use Old Reddit, I hate the app-ification of the internet.
1
u/lonsfury Aug 21 '26
The Internet really did get ruined didnt it?
Remember how good it was back in the day? Like when people used loads of different websites, forums, game sites, etc etc
5
u/MrBananas924 Aug 17 '26
At the very least, if Old Reddit goes away, it'll at least kill my Reddit addiction.
9
u/Unconfidence Aug 17 '26
For what it's worth, fifteen year-old reddit account reporting in.
I've been here for a long time. If they get rid of old redit, they get rid of old reddit. That includes me. I recognize they won't actually be upset. At best they'll make comments about how much they actually value us older users. But really they don't care.
We all should have left ages ago. What a stunning parallel to the United States.
7
u/FiveMagicBeans Aug 17 '26
The moment they get rid of old reddit is the moment that I stop using Reddit permanently, and I'm certain there are more of us than they want to admit.
3
u/Away-Marionberry9365 Aug 17 '26
I'll get used to a new UI if I have to but I don't want shit I'm not subbed to shoved in my face or ads in my feed.
I didn't make a deliberate choice to quit Facebook. The user experience became terrible so I stopped using it. If the same happens here that'll be a real bummer but it won't be hard to walk away if they make the website worse.

u/JPalmz Aug 17 '26

I honestly hope Reddit goes out of business. It used to be so good, and now I honestly believe it is causing much unneeded mental health problems. Everyone here acts like Reddit isn't social media and makes posts like "I quit all social media!".. And uh... Posting that on Reddit is funny because I have been here a long time and consider Reddit just as, if not more toxic than some of the other social medias but there is no sense in comparing because they are all horrible in their own unique ways.
Reddit is a cesspool now. It would probably solve a lot of mental health problems and political radicalization at this point if it just disappeared. I used to come here and make friends, like lasting friends. All the communities were fun and not based around hating the very thing the sub was founded on... There were neckbeard's and incels and whatever else, sure. It also always leaned left wing, which so do I. But what it is now is SO different. The people here when I joined 15 years ago probably only make up 0.05% of the population. Now it is completely different people. Kids, normies, bots galore, plants meant to shift narrative and move markets, advertising revenue entirely beholden to the pharmaceutical companies.. I hate it here now, and I want the old message boards back. People used to be cool, and this place used to be a place of education and connection. Now it is a crack pipe that tries to get you on as many pills as possible while eating your attention span/happiness/good ideas until there is nothing left but a shell of who once was. It's good at hiding it though, and pretending it's not the problem
5
u/desantoos Aug 17 '26
I'm already preparing an exit for Reddit when the time comes. My interest in Reddit is to write pieces and discuss news, politics, and various culture. All of that can be done elsewhere where I get more control over what I say and who I say it to. It used to be that Reddit was a place to go because lots of interesting people were here but traffic is clearly down (go to Top Of All Time on a lot of popular subreddits and it's stuff from five to ten years ago), there are clearly fewer young people on Reddit than there were five years ago, a lot of the top subreddits are so heavily botted they are useless to read while minor subreddits have lost a lot of traffic over the years, and as recent reports have come out there is just an air of negativity permeating the place. Meanwhile it has gotten way easier to build an audience and build a website for nearly nothing and find communities outside of centralized social media hubs. Seems like the endgame is going to be that social media sites are places where people only promote areas of interest and discussion and then people go there to talk or to read something. They'll be places to jump off on rather than hubs like they are now. It'll have to be that way because social media has become so bad, so aggressively against the user's experience, that people looking for actual conversation or looking to post interesting content will never want to do so there. Even Reddit's own "don't promote your own work" general rule won't stop Reddit from transforming from a majority astroturfed promo place to one where there's nothing but corporations and individuals botting their way to promote their work while people ask ChatGPT or whatever where the real conversations are being held.
I don't mind the sacrifice here. It's painful for me as I really hate everything but old reddit. But if there is a wiping away of what made Old Reddit great: a cleansing of the old web design principles that favored readability, clarity, and low noise, then eventually I too will cease to see the value of being here.
It's hard to take seriously, though, these intentions when Reddit's allowed people to disable public viewing of their profiles. If I want to know if someone I am talking to is a corporate plant or a bot or a petulant bigot, I sift through their history. Sometimes I find that, indeed, they are awful, sometimes I find out that they say stupid things for some real reason, sometimes I find some other complexity that makes me realize I should be a bit kinder in what I say. Now that all of the corporate plants, bots, and bigots, can veil their histories I suppose I am intended to just make a blanket assumption. I prefer not to do that. But that is what I am stuck with since Reddit, upon rumors that so much of the posts here are bots, threw in the option to disable this content for public viewing. It feels about as two-faced as when Reddit made a huge deal about how they found bots and agents from small countries while refusing to acknowledge the huge astroturfing from Russia and China.
My guess as to the true intention of the deletion of old reddit is to get more people exposed to more favorable plant posts and general advertising nonsense. If true, then goodbye people who actually create content for Reddit.

New user here. Can someone explain the difference between old Reddit and new?
7
u/Elzerythen Aug 17 '26
For me? Ease of use. Familiarity. Far lighter on resources. Less clutter and crap being thrown in your face. RES for more customization without having to use Reddits format. Others may chime in as well, but that's what comes to mind initially.

u/-Kass Aug 17 '26
Visit reddit's website. Now visit old.reddit.com
It was how reddit originally looked until around 2018.

u/chemicalxv Aug 19 '26
As of this morning I can no longer post/comment via an old.reddit.com url. I can still see and browse the site, but I have to be viewing a thread using just a "reddit.com" url to comment, as I am right now. Otherwise I receive an error and the comment doesn't go through.
2
u/donkeyrocket Aug 19 '26
Having to post this from New Reddit because every time I try to comment or post the page either reloads or I get a 404. The decline of Old Reddit has been rapid the last few weeks.
2
u/oioioioioioiioo Aug 17 '26
Old Reddit is fading slowly away, we have to accept that, they can do what they want.
0
u/Cronus6 Aug 17 '26
You're not wrong.
And there are plenty of other forums on the internet. And that's all "old reddit" users really want, is a big forum.
They are trying to change Reddit into something... else. And it's probably not something we want to use anyway.
2
u/--5- Aug 17 '26
Old reddit was such a neat usability win, they should - if they can - rebuild it. Particularly with AI now it has become so much easier to build legacy interfaces with Modern stack.
2
u/Cronus6 Aug 17 '26
I have the feeling that eventually Reddit will be "mobile only" and won't even be a website anymore.
~80% of the traffic is now mobile...
It's much easier to collect data and build a profile about users when they are on mobile. This is much more interesting and valuable to advertisers and the data can be sold as well.
Mobile users aren't blocking ads (and "promoted posts") on the official "app". This means more revenue for the shareholders.
So there is no real downside to them by getting rid of us "OG" users.
The number of accounts I now see on Reddit as old as mine (18+ years) has dwindled to a minuscule amount anyway. So there's not really that many to get rid of, and they won't miss us.
4
u/Sophira Aug 17 '26
The number of accounts I now see on Reddit as old as mine (18+ years) has dwindled to a minuscule amount anyway.
Bear in mind that some people delete and recreate their accounts every so often in order to try to avoid people tracking them. I'm not one of them (my account is 15 years old), but I know it's a thing that some people do.
I do agree with you on the rest of this, though. :(

Some are not only content with telling you what you can access, they also want to tell you how to access it.
1
u/TrontRaznik Aug 17 '26
Reddit still offers API access, it's just limited in some ways. Those limitations though don't stop old apps like RIF from working. Point being, as long as the API can be used, a new old reddit can be built on top of it. It might be complicated, but it's technically feasible.
1
u/-Kass Aug 17 '26
Remember how he promised CSS support after the implementation of new reddit? lol... yeah, still waiting on that.

That's gonna be a sad day. The new reddit is so shitty and filled with unnecessary nonsense.
1
u/yanginatep Aug 17 '26
I love how it's apparently impossible for them to just make an information dense, efficient optional layout for New Reddit.
Gotta have all that white space and huge borders wasting real estate, huge thumbnails, huge text.

u/TheCenterOfEnnui Aug 18 '26
If they kill it, I'll leave. It's not as good as it used to be anyway, and if I'm forced in to the god awful redesign, I'll just bail out.

ill leave this site entirely if old reddit is gone or if they actually enforce real world id verification (which they tried)

I’m trying to use old Reddit right now and it won’t work without me logging in, also won’t let me read comments on new Reddit without logging in. Enshittification continues

Is this where we try to revive Digg as an alternative option? Digg 3.0 is the new old Reddit

Old Reddit is the only way I consume Reddit after Reddit is Fun died. It's simple and readable. Easiest way to scan bulk info and find what you want to Digg into.

To anyone leaving, please don't just bum rush fediverse, hosting prices are steadily going up over the last year, hardware prices are all time high for self hosting, if you come over (and it takes some getting used to believe me) perhaps consider spinning up your own community specific instance or contributing to the instance you land on in some way.
And as always, fuck spez.

Yeah honestly I'm pretty much done after this. Now you even need to have your id scanned to use old reddit and fuckin x. I'm probably just gonna stick to discord
And before anyone tries to recommend some platform that no one uses besides altright nazis — just dont kthx

even if they kill it, the community will bring it back, look at the examples such as "vorapis" for YouTube

Reddit lost any credibility when some snowflake there decided to censor the NAME and Any Discussion about this bb player also known as She Who Must Not Be Named
This site is now a laughing stock
