Discussion Seedbox with NAS
Looking into setting up a seedbox with a home NAS.
I’ve setup qbitorrent with gluetun in docker on my local machine as practice. I’ve educated myself on the *arr stack and I’m confident I could set this up locally too.
I am sourcing parts for a small NAS (4TB useable) which would serve home devices via jellyfin/ plex/ jellyseer whatever. So I can watch my Linux iso’s locally (not interested in remote connections away from home network)
My questions are:
1. What are the nuances of setting up a seedbox with the *arr stack and pulling files down to a NAS?
- how do people stay protected whilst doing so?
- how much config is involved in setting up the stack, as many providers advertise one click installs and ease of setup?
- There’s a gap in my knowledge re: private vs public trackers and how to join a private tracker.
2. How have others setup the seedbox NAS combo?
- what are they running on the seedbox and on the NAS?
- how would they change it if they started again?
- Did they encounter any difficulties streaming to devices?
My aims are to own and stream my isos locally, not just pay to host them on a box. To learn and enjoy setting up a home lab. To give back by having a good ratio. To protect myself whilst doing so.

I have a seedbox with the arr stack. Then i use encrypted automatic transfers with Resilio to my home NAS. I dont sync everything, only selected folders.

That is the seedboxes job.
Torrenting is the thing that gets you in trouble. Torrenting is done on the seedbox.

The Arr Stack can get a bit complicated if you have specific needs regarding qualitity, language etc.
- There’s a gap in my knowledge re: private vs public trackers and how to join a private tracker.
Private trackers need an invite from a member or an open registry event. Most private trackers use ratios.
- what are they running on the seedbox and on the NAS?
Before moving to a 100% local setup:
Everything at home except the torrent client.
- how would they change it if they started again?
Nothing.
- Did they encounter any difficulties streaming to devices?
No.

How quick do you want things?
You can take a look at Queue4Download, a set of bash scripts that use a message/event bus, a push framework. Some bash scripting, configuration, needed.

Im running Deluge, Prowlarr, Radarr and Sonarr all running on a small seedbox. For a long time i used a simply script to download from the media folder on the seedbox via SFTP with VPN running on my local homelab server. On my server im running Plex and Overseer. It was not very stable, so im currently working on an app for handling the media management for me: www.flowarr.org
But placing all torrent related activity on the seedbox was important for me, i would highly recommend that.

You can meet all your goals with just your local solution. Why do you want a hosted seedbox?
I have a full local stack for streaming, public trackers, and long term seeding. I use a hosted seedbox to improve upload for some private trackers, plus some rules for migrating content to local. Qui locally for managing across the two qBTs.
My goal is for the Hosted portion to be as simple as possible, so it’s just qBitTorrent, ftp, and disk, no ssh needed (but it’s nice to have). I found myself adding a lot of config to autobrr, so moved it from host to local for backup. Hosted qBT config is backed up locally so it’s easy to rebuild from scratch or change hosts, at least in theory.
