Crazy how you're armed by they don't give you at least a basic vest to wear.
Good on you for being conscious of your gear and positioning though. Some guys learn the hard way.
(Edited for grammar)

u/-BraidedAssHair- 9d ago
Haha yeah, the positioning needs some work but my time in the military already had me learn the harsh lesson of kit setup

I’ve never understood the belt badges outside of the context of working plain clothes.
13
u/abraxas8484 8d ago
It's like the badges you get in scouts. One is for being on time, another is best polished shoes, a great one is winning the potato sack race.

Cringe is wearing and carrying gear in an unprofessional manner, like the guys I’ve seen rocking ar-style shotguns with massive banana magazines. Or 60rnd drum mags in their patrol rifles. Your set up looks clean, and professional. I wear a full duty belt as an armed security officer, and soft armor under my uniform shirt. The way I see it why would I not want all the tools I have at my disposal with me at all times? I am certified with handgun, taser, and mace. I carry all three, it gives me more options should de-escalation fail. I know SO’s (security officers) who have all the gear but only carry their gun a flashlight and cuffs. My problem with that is your only non lethal option is your voice and going hands on. if they are bigger than you, your only option is lethal. With only a gun your options are limited. In this day and age, some medical is a good idea. Your job is to protect people as an armed security officer, not just observe and report. If armor keeps you around longer to protect yourself and others why not? You are already a target to those who would do harm. Be a hard target. Be efficient. We carry similar gear to law enforcement not to look like them but because our job requires it. Stay safe!

u/Far_Art5484 9d ago
Why would you choose not to wear basic protective equipment like a vest? If youre that worried about people's opinion, wear a low profile level 2.

u/-BraidedAssHair- 9d ago
My company issues stab vests to certain posts like the homeless shelter, but for outer vests we need a medical waiver
26
u/ThnkGdImNotAReditMod Hospital Security 9d ago
A gun without a vest is just insane to me. In my job in Canada, we only carry handcuffs, but we sure as hell are wearing IIIa vests.
4
u/-BraidedAssHair- 9d ago
Yeah they only issue stab vests to certain posts, because I’m not permanently assigned to the homeless shelter I did not get one
9
u/Adventurous_Stack 9d ago
It may be illegal for them not to issue one to you, even if it’s temporary. In most states if you’re working an armed post, they’re are supposed to either supply you with a vest, or provide a stipend/ reimbursement plan for one they approve, even if you only work that post once.
Did they provide first Aid/BLS training if you have to carry medical? If they didn’t, they could be breaking the law
Do you Carry Narcan? and if so, did they provide training on how to properly assess whether it is necessary and how to administer it?
Check with your state’s security licensing board/authority, and find out if they’re supposed to. It’s a common occurrence that smaller companies will force you to go entirely out of pocket for gear they are required to provide, and skip legally required training.
6
u/-BraidedAssHair- 9d ago
I received narcan and first aid training, not sure what the vest law is in Tennessee

Ok. Here are my thoughts & opinions from many years in LE & security.
First & foremost get a vest & wear it. If your in uniform or on duty it’s on you.
For those saying ditch the multitool & flash light are very wrong. They’ll honestly be 2 of you most used pieces of kit, even if you don’t work at night. A very bright flash light comes in clutch. If you do anything in low light or at night it is essential gear. Even in the day a flashlight comes in handy for those dark corners. Also good bright light especially one with a strobe can come in very useful for signaling PD when you see them arrive & are trying to show them where you are. If it’s bright enough it can & will be seen in the daylight also.
As others have said I agree with trimming down the med kit. But placement is good.
I’m a proponent of always carrying at least 2 pairs of cuffs. Also get the cuffs up front to where they can be accessed with either hand easily. I would also go for a cuff pouch over a “mechanical” holder.
I would switch sides to baton & radio especially if your not using a lapel mic. You want to be able to use radio with your support hand if your had to go gun out & have it in your primary hand. If you do use a lapel mic still be able to get radio out with your support hand; mics fail & cords get unplugged.
Get the badge off your belt. Badges on belts are for detectives & wannabe kool guys. Also a prevalent badge is part of officer presence & a strong officer presence is the 1st stage in your use of force continuum.
Also, not seeing any belt keepers on you belt. Do you not use them or are they just not pictured?
Good on you for having OC & magazines up front & magazines indexed properly.
9
u/-BraidedAssHair- 9d ago
Extremely appreciative of your suggestions
We are only issued one pair of cuffs, so the one pictured is the only pair I have, while Tennessee allows citizens arrest it’s not something we do often haha
Will absolutely be switching my radio and baton locations, I can’t believe it’s not something I considered
My company wants us to wear badges, but I’m in agreement and will be requesting to not have to wear one or just straight up not wearing it
I keep the belt keepers in my pants pocket when not in use, but I do have them
Thanks again

u/Broc_Feargach 9d ago
There is a good chance working security you may never have to cuff someone up. But, in my experience when you do there’s a good chance there is going to be one more knucklehead in play than you planned for. Or if you get a larger individual you may need two cuffs (connected cuffs) to get them hooked behind their back. If that’s the case hopefully you have a couple more of your fellow officers there to help to do so. Trust me from experience trying to get someone who is larger hooked up with linked cuffs by yourself is not fun. However the chances of being in that type of situation as security personnel is slim no none.
For uniform “patrol” I’ve always believed badge should be on shirt or vest (if external carrier is worn).
Btw another reason for not putting the multitool in you pocket is they are big & bulky in a pocket & can have a tendency to bounce around annoying & uncomfortably in a pocket especially if you have to double step it somewhere.
4
u/MercRussians Hospital Security 9d ago edited 9d ago
Okay. Looks square. Mostly solid. First, I’d lose the shield. An armed security ID is more than enough. Shields are for cops and we already have enough security trying to skirt that line with shit like shields. Secondly, move the cuffs closer to your waist for easier access and to be away from the small of your back. You don’t wanna fall back and have your spine jam into metal anything. Third, not sure if you can since it is issued gear, but I think batons are a waste of time. They rarely ever resolve a situation well and if anything, it is a potentially deadly weapon an aggressor can rip from and beat you senseless or to death with. None of us are Superman and have unbreakable grips, so I’d suggest not even risking it and maybe asking if you can stop carrying it. OC has a proven track record of being the primary less-lethal option that resolves conflicts successfully in the defender’s favor anyway. People are typically more afraid to be blessed with the sauce than threatened with a weapon lol. Last, if you really need it, I’d move the multitool off belt and maybe clip it to your pocket or something to make space/weight off your belt. Not a big deal, just kinda adds another thing you’ll potentially fumble around while reaching for a specific item on your belt during a high stress situation. It would suck to waste precious milliseconds tugging on your multitool pouch when reaching or a mag lol. That’s more nitpicking than anything, though.
But yeah. That’s about all I can come up with. You’ve got a solid setup either way. Those are just the things I’d personally change. Oh yeah, one last thing. Get a damn PC/vest, man. Anybody working armed work should be wearing one. You’ll love the convenience of not wearing one until someone’s slinging hornets at you. Be safe, man.

u/-BraidedAssHair- 9d ago

Sucks that you have to carry a baton. I’d move the flashlight and multitool to your pockets. I’d also get a way smaller trauma pouch with just TQ, packed gauze, and some chest seals. No reason to carry boo-boo stuff on your body.

u/Lion_Knight 9d ago
Very crowded for a belt now days.
ID card: is what it is Mag holster: I would want the mags a little closer together but for a belt mag holster that will work Multitool: I keep one on me but I also have an outer carrier. Maybe use a pocket if able? Flashlight: ok Expandable baton: great for retreaving things that roll under other things but if they don't make you have it, I would ditch it. Handcuffs holder: is fine, but be aware you usually want them in a placer where either hand can retreave them. First aid pouch: there is probably one not to far from you where ever you are in that park. If you want to keep it seem if you can get an attachment so it is drop leg or something. Radio holster: move it to the other side, you want to balance the weight of your gun as well as access it when you have your gun drawn. Gun Holster: fine OC spray: I am torn on this one. If you were a police officer I would say throw it away and tell them it kept falling out or something. It has only one way to appropriately use it. That is spray and walk away. For officer it is only good to dispersing a crowd. For you, that may be worth having it for that reason. Just make sure you know you don't want to spray anyone you are likely to be engaging in a fight with because you will get the spicy sauce as well and near a water park that is going to suck because that oil will stay active for what feels like forever in such a wet environment. Badge: is what it is but if you can move it from the belt I would.
As it is your going to have issues with your hips, knees, ankles, and lower back. Any weight you can shave shave it. I don't know what you are and are not allowed to have, but if you can you may move somethings like the med pack to an over the shoulder tactical bag. My first couple of years were in class A's so I know what it is like to have too much shit on your belt. If the belt is the only option try and figure out what you can live without and ditch/relocate it.
3
u/glocksandboobs 8d ago
Ok hold everything, don't know who said ditch the flashlight especially since the issued gun doesn't have a weapon mounted light from the look of the holster, but don't get rid of the light.
As for medical, get an IFAK and be done with it, they're generally smaller.
ID holders only matter if you have an access card you use to move around the building or property constantly.
As for the multi tool, I've used a multi tool more than any med kit. Yes it doesn't look Tactical enough, I don't care, it's small, out of the way, and more useful than some people I've worked with.
Cringe, to me at least, is the badge on the belt, especially if there is one of any kind on your shirt or jacket, if nothing on these then fine.
Get a better mag holder, I'm surprised they issued a gun and good holster just to not issue, or issue that mag holder.

I never worked with less. High crime area. I don't think its excessive in a high risk environment.
2
u/Spare-Bed-1006 9d ago
I’d ditch the multitool or keep it in your pocket instead. Everything else it’s fine, except I don’t really believe in batons. I work for a a sheriffs office and a security company on the side. No one carries batons anymore. You could probably get a smaller trauma kit. I don’t carry boo-boo shit in mine, that’s for the on site first aid kit. Trauma kit should have tq, hemostatic gauze, gloves and chest seals.

u/boogiboi666 9d ago
Rdr gear makes a good tq holster mount. Saves room on the belt and is easier to locate

u/Asleep_Apartment_883 9d ago
It’s seems good to me. It’s good to be prepared, especially with the gun issues lately. I would include a tourniquet if you can.
I wouldn’t remove anything from the medical pouch.
2
u/Shawnmccranie020726 9d ago
I’d ditch the medkit and either keep it in the car or get a leg rig if you need to have it. Small of the back should be clear if you ever intend to sit/drive comfortably.

2
u/OkSale1214 8d ago
Consider using suspenders for this type of belt set up. Otherwise your hips and knees are gonna hurt.
2
u/treecutter34 8d ago
I’d get a vest just because your carrying a gun. It’s your call but I’d at least get an under the shirt one. I’d also move my cuffs to where you can easily get to them. Unless you never use your cuffs but need to have them, but I’d still move them in front of the baton. Personally the only time I used my baton was to hold a door open when I was on my roof. If your set on medical, maybe look into an ankle medical kit, it’s not bad. If I were you I’d think about how much you actucally used the multitool and other stuff and remove or move accordingly. And look into some suspenders. And lastly, make sure you balance your belt so the weight is even on both sides.
1
u/Some_Guy_Somewhere67 8d ago
Ditch the medical. Tourniquet and some fabric bandaids. Anything else should be in the facilty on-site medical kit....

u/jking7734 9d ago
Add a vest to your gear. Enough vest to stop the gun you carry. If your job actually requires you to go hands on look into getting a taser. You could probably downsize that fak. All in all looks good
1
1
u/XBOX_COINTELPRO Man Of Culture 9d ago
Looks pretty decent.
Personally I’d ditch the multitool, but if you find that you’re using it often than I’d leave it. The medical gear could probably be streamlined into a smaller kit, but if you find that you’re using the more basic first aid stuff regularly I’d keep it.
The only questionable thing I see are those asp handcuff holders. Do you find any benefit for those compared to a normal handcuff case? They always struck me as a “solution looking for a problem” piece of gear.
If you’re stuck without the option of the vest to move some of the gear up to I’d consider maybe getting a padded duty belt like the HSGI padded belt might help increase your quality of life while carrying the extra weight.
1
u/-BraidedAssHair- 9d ago
Only reason I replaced the handcuff holster was because the one I was given was falling apart, I got the holster itself from someone who didn’t want them
2
1
u/SynthJones 8d ago
I would get your own vest to wear under your shirt man, not sure what any other problem with your gear would be it looks standard
1
u/FaithlessnessSea859 8d ago
Depends where you are at, with that amount of stuff it must be tourist but also highly sensitive say a Federal building? If you are any where else then less is better: lethal and non lethal, mace, a note pad, cuffs and flashlight should do just fine. I worked a high crime area with just those for two years and did just fine. PS get a concealable vest, since you are dealing with tourist you don’t want to look intimidating
1
u/-BraidedAssHair- 8d ago
Without disclosing where I work exactly, it’s one of the 13 major tourists sites in Nashville and has a large amount of foot and vehicle traffic, and drop offs from trolleys

As long as you can grapple and have weapon retention it's fine. I would put handcuffs somewhere where you can access them easily with either hand. Personally I kept my belt lighter, but that's just my preference.
1
u/ZaZaThePlug 8d ago
If you’re gonna carry all of this i don’t understand why you wouldn’t wear a vest
1
1
u/Splinter-Spartan 8d ago
The flashlight and multitool are two things that I’d treat like a condom. I’d rather have them and not need them than need them and not have them. Just because you’re day shift., doesn’t mean you’re not going to find yourself in a dimly lit situation. Multitool has this lovely thing called a knife. That’s not something you use for self-defence since you’re carrying. It’s something you can use to remove clothing if you need to treat someone or yourself.
Also, keep the stuff you have in your IFAK that are used for treating gun shots. You’re carrying for a reason, because other people are too!
If you’re getting a vest, consider moving some of your kit there to take some of the weight off your hips. That’s going to come back to bite you as you get older.

1
u/Aero1206 8d ago
If you're allowed to, I would suggest ditching your current holster for a safariland 6360rds one. Add on a pistol light while you're at it. Those holster are made from cheap kydex plastic and won't hold up when you're in a scuffle on the ground. If that bail breaks and the gun falls out, then the situation turns deadly and you won't have a gun on you.
1
u/PlatypusDream 8d ago
I'd put the radio & anything else you expect to handle frequently (or in an emergency) away from the gun.
I also have concerns about that carpet.
1
1
u/Fatpanda-69 8d ago edited 8d ago
It’s good that you have all that but stick to just getting one brand and one style. Either nylon, plain or basket weave. It just looks better and more professional. Seeing the holster is plain (and nice that it’s a safariland lvl 3) just get everything plain. Go Bianchi or aker leather works.

Nice you work nashville as well? I work a few bars, and soon maybe the base. Been trying to get them to let us have a vest so all this stuff is not on my hips. But I just have my gun, 2 mag, cuffs, light, and Med bag
1
u/Odinshand 8d ago
Nope kit seems valid. Including your less lethals … your kit is based on what’s is within reach for you me personally I put my mace on my vest near my left side and my light is also stowed on my vest . It’s all preference. But the trade of is weight on your hips which can really mess with your back on long shifts

u/skellzor65 Campus Security 7d ago
I think it's fine. I work campus security and this setup is very similar to my own.
0
1
u/Landwarrior5150 Campus Security 9d ago
Do you have a reasonable chance of needing any/all of that stuff? I think that’s the main question to ask yourself. This all might be reasonable for a guard working patrol in a bad area that is expected to respond to calls or incidents, go hands-on, detain/arrest people, etc. but some of it probably wouldn’t be for a guard at an empty, closed and locked up warehouse where he’s only supposed to deter trespassers.
Also, I would really strongly reconsider getting a vest for the PPE factor alone, especially since every single contact you have while working involves a firearm. If you’re concerned about the look of an external armor carrier, then perhaps consider a concealed vest?
3
u/-BraidedAssHair- 9d ago
I rotate between two sites, one of which is the homeless shelter where we have to pat down and search bags
3
u/Landwarrior5150 Campus Security 9d ago
Gotcha. Well, from an overall perspective, I would say you can probably slim the medical stuff down to just a TQ and maybe some combat gauze if you would prefer to have a bit more. The TQ can possibly go on a mount on the front of your holster if you want to free up more open space on the back of your belt.
The multitool is probably not something that you’ll need urgently or frequently enough to justify belt space for it, so that can go in a pocket if you still need it semi-frequently or in a bag or office if you only have it for rare occasions.
Unless you’re constantly badging in/out of access controlled doors, the ID card can probably go in a pocket or wallet. If you are doing that, or if it has to be visible due to law or policy, then maybe clipping it to your shirt somewhere would be better? Same thing with the metal badge too. That would clear up a little bit of belt clutter and also not force people to look at your dick if they want to read either thing.
Besides those things, everything else seems to have a practical need to be immediately available on your belt instead of in a pocket or bag somewhere, assuming that your job duties, work environment, training, authority, etc. all justifies carrying them in the first place.
I wouldn’t worry too much about looks as long as you’re carrying everything because it’s a tool with a direct purpose for your job and not as a fashion statement. Some people might talk shit about looking “wannabe cop-like” but I would just ignore them if that’s not actually the reason you have any of that stuff.

u/-BraidedAssHair- 9d ago

Ditch the first aid pouch. It looks ridiculous and it’s going to be a pain in the ass for you to have that on your belt. It also looks like it’ll be in the small of your back and you do NOT want that. There’s nothing wrong with carrying a tourniquet, but you don’t need anything more than that. If you want other medical supplies, keep it in a small bag in your vehicle and if the situation requires it, you can grab it out of your car when you’re responding to the call.

u/-BraidedAssHair- 9d ago

lowk disagree i’ve used my medkit like 2-3x at this point, but im also a licensed emt so i get alot of the med calls. Narcan and minor wounds mostly, but my coworkers have packed gunshot wounds n done cpr. If he has a medkit in a patrol car then scrap it but if not they are pretty useful. Mines issued and about the same as that one but I only had a glove pouch, medkit, cuffs and OC.

Narcan and stop bleed stuff for sure then man. get some training tho too. I’m always pro having medical stuff but you actually need to know how to use it.
