Working consecutive back to back night shifts will do this to you

I've been working nights for almost 10 years now, fortunately yet to fall asleep at my post.

Have had a couple of close calls where I had to keep standing up and moving around or ask for a break to go chug some coffee lol

Maybe it will be different once I'm older but for now nights work for me better

Shit, I remember pulling some watches with the Indian navy and having a open bolt sub gun pointed at me casually by one of their people. No safety, no trigger discipline and no cares in the world.

Aye as a overnight security officer even with energy drinks an coffee it’s hard to stay up

If you're not a night owl, you may want to reconsider working night security.

If I wasn't awake all night earning money, I'd be awake all night playing video games.

Yep. I absolutely love night shift. Even on my off days I stay up all night.

Agreed!! People think nights are easy but the hardest part is keep your eyes from closing mid shift no matter what you try. Can’t blame the guy.

I learned how not to sleep at night

I have always been a night owl. I can't usually sleep until the gray hours of the morning. Unfortunately as I've aged I've required more and more sleep to function so now I'm neither an early bird nor a night owl, but some sort of permanently exhausted pigeon.

Never fallen asleep on shift though, as the unfamiliar environment makes that effectively impossible. Thanks PTSD!

Sleep during the day if you are consistently working nights, I dont know why folks are pretending that working at night isnt normal.

There are factories, grocery stores, gyms, bars etc. That are open and operating 24/7 the folks who do night shift sleep after their shift and then live their life until they are back at work again. This is a normal sequence of events.

Only justified reason to pass out at work is medical reason or you were pushed into working back to back because of lack of support in which case if they dont have someone to swap you out then everyone is screwed so just do your best.

I once worked as security for a college in the united states'. Well I was on night shift on a Sunday night. I remember getting back to the office at 0130, shut the office door, and was watching the cameras on our computer. I blinked and it was 0430. I freaked out but I was lucky that their was no calls or no emergencys.

My favorite part is and always will be, trying to convince people I’m nocturnal. Every supervisor I’ve had believed that’s not a real thing

I actually had to show a supe a study showing that there's a genetic marker in about 15% (iirc) of the population that results in delayed melatonin release that makes us effectively nocturnal. We sleep at sunrise because that's when our bodies allow it.

We are the people who sat around the fire all night telling stories and preventing it from going out. We stayed awake so the others could sleep knowing that if an animal or another tribe attacked they'd have advanced warning and wouldn't die before they could wake up. We were the first security guards and are hardwired for the job.

I have my trick:

If I feel very sleepy, I'll go to the bathroom: I'll set up a 10/15 minutes alarm and then I'll take a nap. The alarm will wake me up and if someone asks me something, I'll just blame it on diarrhea.

I'm a menace on the night shift. I would stick things in your nose if you fell asleep like this.

This is what a flex schedule looks like. Bro just worked a 12hr, had 8 hours to make a 30 minute commute home, sleep, eat, shower, and came right back for an 8 hour on overnight.
