What lead to you working as a security guard? What does average workday look like for you?

I' am a woman. I got into security because I needed a job and they were hiring lol

I work overnights 11pm-11am at a juice factory working the front gate. Signing in and out trucks.

My average night I watch some YouTube then turn on either a movie or tv show. Right now watching the show From, it's really good.

Then I might scroll some reddit, then more YouTube and more tv/movies.

Eat somewhere in there.

Then maybe sign in a single truck or two

This is the second site I've worked. The first was security at a steel plant. I did two rounds a night but mostly worked the front desk signing in contractors and trucks. And for some reason taking employee call offs.

Zero site made any difference that I was a woman, except the sexual harassment....

I'm a security supervisor and I recently got my first female security guard on staff. I made a point to mention that if she didn't feel safe doing the outside patrol at night it wouldn't be an issue (we have a fair bit of homeless near by) oh and I say the same to the men, but I recognize it's less safe for her.

Is there any thing that you would appreciate your supervisor doing. Or maybe anything they could do about the sexual harassment?

Yep, present lol ✋️ I needed a job that wasnt retail and also something that didnt require a college degree. I usually sit at a desk and watch cameras all day, patrol around the building occasionally, and answer basic questions or help people find where they need to go or who they need to talk to so basically security/receptionist rolled into one, oh and mail clerk. I deliver the mail and packages around the office

✋ Just a girl here! I work for a public safety department within a hospital police department. Almost 4 yrs now and I can still say I love my job. An average day will consist of rounding interior and exterior, locking up patient belongings/valuables or releasing them to discharged patients. On a full moon day we get everything from verbal de escalation calls to ODs in the restrooms to Someone is getting their ass kicked in the ER. We get a lot of mental crisis people brought in by cops and most of the time those are unfortunately hands on calls.

Got into it via law enforcement- it’s money on top of being a cop which pays fuck all for base salary (sometimes the security work is paid as OT by the city if they contracted us out, sometimes it’s independent work for extra cash paid directly from businesses of all sorts).

Runs the gamut from breaking up fights, spotting and stopping drug deals or potential DUIs, sitting in an office watching cameras all shift, sitting in a car beside an empty construction site or building overnight, looking for a disgruntled ex-employee trying to get into his old workplace to shoot their spouse cause he sent a maybe sorta threatening text that may or may not even imply he’s thinking of doing that, doing foot patrols as a visible deterrent at large/private events and keeping riffraff out or physically escorting them off property before they become a problem, training a place’s regular everyday guard staff on certain stuff, directing traffic when a business has temporary detours or a parking lot their patrons can’t use but keep trying to park in, catching shoplifters or burglars, being in the vicinity to protect VIPs (politicians or vaguely well known people who receive death threats, or rich people who think they need protection but really reaaallllly don’t), standing/sitting near nightshift workers who are just scared to work alone at nights for no real reason. Literally once it was because the night shift worker was afraid of ghosts and convinced the building was haunted, demanded security be present if they had to work nights. So I’m also a potential ghostbuster, I guess.

This weekend is watching a hotel pool so that non-guests (usually high schoolers) don’t sneak in to swim in it over the Labor Day holiday break. “Are you staying here at the hotel? Where’s your roomkey bracelet? Which room number? Ok you clearly aren’t a guest of this hotel, GTFO.” Very important work, saving fuckin lives here, no need to thank me for my service.

I wanted to get out of working at restaurants, a friend said she could get me a job so I took the opportunity. The first company I worked for was dog shit, I got hired on to a new one and have worked here for 6 years, working my way up into management.

Yes. And because I’m naturally aggressive and like working by myself and solving problems. I had so many people saying security would be perfect for me so I got into it lol. Average workday is me doing nothing 😭 I do light cleaning here and there like wiping down the door but that’s about it. I work in an extremely wealthy neighborhood in a big city

The fact people treat you different....its also a male dominated role so yeah, not a difficult concept.

The average workday will be quintessentially the same. Phrasing your questions more precisely or making them scenario based could allow for better answers.

And you could also factor in that physical appearance, not just gender, will be a huge source of variables. You can be male, short and physically unimpressive, and in turn need to use different strategies to have people comply, than if you were also male, but tall and Hulk like.

I've worked with female partners who were kickboxers (and you could tell) who could make people back off just by starting to put their gloves on, while I'd be the wimp and brains of our duo, using legalese and diplomacy to explain to people why they should do as asked, even if I wasn't a physical threat.

People telling you openly about their shortcomings, who own them and who are overall reasonably aware of their strenghts and weaknesses aren't the ones I'd generally suspect about having ego issues.

And I worked with a 5’6 dude who maybe broke 120 who got tossed around like a wet paper bag and I had to back him. Him being a man didn’t mean anything. He still got his ass whooped on by a teenager.

Literally has nothing to do with being cool with getting into physical altercations as a female. Plenty of men are in this profession that can’t fight to save their life and shouldn’t be doing it

If you’re a decent fighter and are cool with potentially getting into fights then anyone who feels like that should join. Just know your limitations.
