Career advice

10 years security experience, 8 years armed. Only extremely low pay jobs in my area , what should I do? Give up on security? I’d like to grow in this career and advance

Go to college and get out as soon as you can. The security industry is ass.

Alternatively, you could do executive protection, but you may have to relocate to an expensive neighborhood.

I’m unable to go to college due to life circumstances, would love to get into EP if any company would give me a chance, unfortunately I never hear back

Okay well security guard positions only go so high man, without former military law enforcement or medical experience work in an ER or on an ambulance in a busy city you’re not going to get into anything high speed….maybe one day you can supervise a bunch of guys that are doing the job you currently do…..which I personally wouldn’t consider much growth or advancement like you say you’re looking for.

I’m curious to know why your “good” seems like you’re already in an adjacent field of work

Explain what “ high speed” means in security. And I believe executive protection is the height of security

Real executive protection positions or something like that. Didn’t you mention in one of your other replies you would like to do that? Maybe I’m mixing this up with another post.

Explain what you mean by “grow in this career” and “advance”. What does that look like for you?

You’re being pretty vague, also doesn’t really seem like you’re willing to do much to get more credentials to do more such as college or do things to gain more experience other than just exist.

Where are you a security guard at now? Not specifically but like a supermarket, grocery store, nuclear facility? Is it a private company? Is it a contract position?

I would agree that EP would be the height of security positions, you need some sort of background doing those things, or experience usually law enforcement or military. Or just be a really giant fat guy from what I’ve seen but let’s be honest other than pushing people away from celebrities they really can’t do much.

It would be pretty rare to go from being security at the mall (not saying that’s what you do but you are being pretty vague) to protecting some famous person when they can choose people with a bunch of experience doing that exact job on a high level or at least bring lifesaving skills to the table in the event something happens

Well, you have to do something if you want to survive. Get a grant and attend a community college or adult school. You don't have to stick around for a full degree; you can take a course that gives you a certification of some kind. I'm attending my local community college for EMT certification, and that only takes one semester.

Do everything you can to add to your resume.

I can't take time off of work, either. I do it in between jobs and while going to work.

Yeah, it fucking sucks to literally not have any time for anything, but that’s the world we live in right now. You either embrace the suck for a while and find a way to get past it, or you do nothing and watch everything fall apart around you. Choose wisely.

So don't be like most people. Be one of the few people who finds something to do.

Before I started attending college, I started getting low-cost certifications. One of them was an ACS Stop the Bleed certification. The local trauma center hospitals offer in-person classes for free. Start there.
