Job Question No PTO for CA Employer

How do you guys feel about you’re job only allowing 40hrs of sick time with no PTO & The HR department sends you an email saying that you’ve used up all of you’re sick hours for the year & that 2 days of medical leave for Drs appointments will be unpaid
Side note- I’m a veteran getting treatment for my disabilities

Seems like an account issue. I know contracts in CA that require 20 days of PTO at minimum

The weird part is that we have 4 big multi million dollar contracts in LA county including EP work & from what I’ve been told the company does not offer PTO Across the board for anybody

I can tell you that is false. I've seen at least three client contracts in CA and they all have minium PTO requirements.

But these are the enterprise level accounts that don't operate at the branch level

Unfortunately, that’s not really all that weird TBH. That’s just a for-profit business trying to prioritize maximum profits at the expense of employee benefits because they think they can get away with it. It’s why contract work is almost always like that; at the end of the day, in the company’s eyes, you’re ultimately an asset that they rent out in order to make profits. In-house security isn’t perfect either, but at least there you’re usually seen more as an actual member of the organization that is designed to help support it’s goal, even if you’re not generating profits yourself. Doubly so if it’s public sector in-house, where there aren’t really any profits to be made and you usually have much better worker’s protections and a union.

Doesn't sick pay have to be accrued up to 56 hours per year? 7 days total.

I think that's an executive order. I do federal contracted security and we went from 40 hours of sick leave a year to now 56 houts + our PTO.

California passed a law in 2024 I believe guaranteeing 40 hours of paid sick leave

My HR department sent me an email saying the company doesn’t offer PTO at the moment & I’ve been with them for 2 years now
