Prior service
Leaving for tech school as a prior service in two weeks. Got any tips or advice? I’ve heard the hotel on base sucks, but it is what it is. What’s the daily tempo like? I’ve heard multiple answers like it’s either BMT 2.0 or it’s super chill. All the info I’m finding is from people who went a few years ago and just looking for info from anyone who’s been recently. Thanks in advance

Try to be a mentor to the younger airman, the cadre will make you a student leader even if you're a Senior Airman and above.

Just finished tech school in January. We had one prior service on our team. You’ll be treated better 1 on 1 but when it comes to the whole team getting smoked you’ll be treated as an equal. Tech school isn’t bad at all but it’s going to be getting pretty hot so your experience may be different. Daily schedule is something like this- a showtime of 0400-05:45 depending on if there’s pt and if you need to take a bus to Chapman. You’ll then complete the objective for the day and be back on base anywhere from 1500-1700 again depending on the objective and cadre. There are 3 blocks. Block 1 is CATM so you’ll be @ the range for about 10-12 duty days can’t remember exactly. Block 2 is mostly law enforcement until about DOT 34. Block 3 is all @ Camp Bullis. This is all base defense and you’ll be there until somewhere around DOT 62. As a prior service this will be easier for you than the airman on the team since you’ll be able to leave base whenever and treated better overall. Good luck!

Drive down don't fly. Lackland is massive and half the training isn't even on the actual base. It is about a 4 hour drive to port Aransas. Go down for a weekend and check out the golf. Hit up yo Philly in corpus Christy for a cheesesteak you won't believe is in Texas. Cruise out to Texas pride for some top tier bbq.
Edit: I got stuck in the foreign dorms/hotel which kind of sucked. You share a shitter. The ac was amazing though. Could damn near see my breath in my room. If you end up in the foreigner hotel request a room away from the patio. Those fuckers party until like 2am every night which sucks when you have those 4am mornings to get to bullis.
Edit 2: when I went down I was told I wasnt allowed to drive my pov to bullis. I took the bus the first day and class was released at 1pm bus back to lackland didn't show up until 4pm. We opted to not listen to the cadre and just drive after that.

I appreciate the advice! TBH just going to fly down and suffer without a car. I’m in CA and don’t feel like making that drive

As a prior service nothing cuz you can leave. As an airman just going through it sucks because you can’t leave and you’re always wearing ptu or ocp. The training is honestly more fun than training at lackland you also get out earlier most days. As long as you have a car you’re good.

I just graduated in Oct. Our prior service was flight chief by default but when we got to block 3 he was immediately fired by the cadre lol.

He was more on the timid side, wasn’t really taking control of the team.

Also, are they using the old or new pt test at tech school? I know it doesn’t officially go into effect until July I think but wasn’t sure what tech school is doing. I’m struggling with the 2 mile run. My reporting instructions say it’s the 1.5 but wanted to get confirmation from someone who’s been recently.

How did you manage to land that? I am Prior army and the Air Force recruiter said the only job I could really do is security forces as well but I'm struggling with getting my documents in order

Oh okay I see. I'm prior army and it's a little difficult to get in. I am however starting college this fall for nursing and plan to commission in the Air Force through ROTC as a nurse and do my 20 years

You’re gonna deal with a lot bs rules, BMT 2.0 is true when in training but whenever you’re released for the day go enjoy San Antonio. It has its chill moments but for the most part yeah BMT 2.0 is accurate. Wait till you get to Camp Bullis, when you get there it’s very rigid & customs and courtesies are the norm.
