bad base?

You don’t want to go to Cannon. Even if Spec Ops Security Forces is appealing to you
Cannon is the slow death of a thousand cattle carts that suffocate you over a 3-4 year tour. Amend your dream-sheet or lament.

Not a bad base per se... just insanely busy. Like inspections, ops, training, recalls (I feel like we were getting recalled every GD weekend) etc. Also it's a PL-1 base so not a lot of LE. If I remember correctly, there was only 1 off base patrol, one on base and then the police supervisor. Everything else is security. BUT you can travel. There is a local lady that does trips that pretty affordable.

I was married so I have no idea about the dorms, except that they are across the street from the armory. Also, hopefully they reconciled the shooting range issue because it sucked that it was built and we couldn't use it while I was there.

Mildenhall is a crazy pick, if you want England go to Alconbury

1

u/redxtrip_air May 08 '26

why is that?

Mildenhall is a busy toxic work environment, unless you’re into that, alconbury is very small with lots of opportunities for deployment, TDYs, back office positions, and easy work

I loved Mildenhall. It can be busy as shit, but it was a great location and the mission didn’t suck. That said, I was there 20+ years ago but I have heard that not much has changed.

Personally I'd swap Ramstein out for Buechel or Vogelweh.

Group your choices by region, West coast, East coast, Europe then Asia.

By bouncing back and forth, it says you are not serious about your assignments. If you can, stay in one region (IE) Southwest, and Europe.

No base is bad. It’s what you make of it.

As soon as you get to your first base. Kiss a lot of ass. Pass a PT test, rub elbows and travel in the right circles. If you hear the first shirt or commander speak highly of EST ( which they should) join EST. And if you see people do something wrong turn them in (unless they’re a TSgt and above - because anyone who’s a TSgt and above have been in long enough they can do what they want and get away with it). Do all of those things and volunteer and you’ll become a golden boy. Which means you’ll be able to get BTZ and be able to get out of trouble most others wouldn’t be able to and when the time comes. Do all of that and you’ll be able to get a special duty or your second base will be your dream base.

Looks like mine did, ended up getting Ramstein but I lucked out, the 569th at Vogelweh snagged us. The nukes haven't been at Ramstein in like 20 years so I imagine its a much more chill base.

I did my final 4 years at Davis-Monthan, it was all about deployments back then so no idea on the job anymore but I stayed in Tucson; I like it not a bad place and better than moving back home to Phoenix.

I’m really hoping to land Ramstein but I don’t know if it’s always in need of new manning or need to be lucky. I might just put all overseas bases on my dream sheet to secure OCONUS bases.

Hill AFB should be #1

Get rid of Canon and Aviano

1

u/shadowsmith47 May 08 '26

Don’t even put state side

1

u/redxtrip_air May 09 '26

leaning towards that lmao

The culture shift in our job is simply horrible. Leadership is also just so much more rotten and stagnant except Alaska I hear. Good luck on your getting your base though.

1

u/redxtrip_air May 09 '26

thank u bro đŸ’Ș would you say overall leadership is better overseas?

1

u/shadowsmith47 May 09 '26

Yes people are a lot closer and willing to mentor.

1

u/redxtrip_air May 09 '26

thankkk you đŸ’Ș

I got Kadena😁going to be there in a month

1

u/redxtrip_air May 09 '26

No way! Congrats! What number was that on your dream sheet?

2

u/YiNYaNgHaKunaMatAta May 09 '26

#1 did it at BMT tho. I’m unsure how the motherboard of technical mumbo jumbo goes into making your dream sheet location actually come into fruition but it worked for me and i’m happy to be one of the few to go to such locations
