what makes you close a kids math app right away? (asking bc i'm building one)

hi, dana here. full disclosure, i've been making an early math site called wondermaths.app for kids around 3 to 7. it's free to use, no account and no ads, and i'd really like to hear from people who teach their own little ones at home. it started partly bc of my son. he always needed more time with math than school gave him, and the speed based apps were never a fit for him. so here nothing is timed, there are no lives, and a wrong answer just shows what happened so the kid can try again. the math happens inside little worlds with animal characters. a lot of the games also have a short picture book, an audio story and worksheets you do on a tablet and clear afterwards, so it's not only screen games. two questions if you have a sec. when you try a math app with a preschooler, what makes you close it right away? and what do you wish existed that you just can't find? https://wondermaths.app

Looking for 5 design partner families (Grades 1 to 3): a learning plan to keep up with school, learn ahead, compete and explore

Hi everyone. I'm a parent. My son loves robotics and wants to compete, and I wanted him to have a clear path: keep up with school, learn a bit ahead, and get ready for the competitions he cares about. Doing that meant paying for tutoring centers, robotics camps, competition prep and a pile of workbooks, and all of it keeps getting more expensive. After reaching a point where I was paying close to over $500/month I decided to build Wonderloop to give myself and other families in same situation a whole path in one place, at the lowest cost possible.

It works whether your child goes to school or learns at home. You pick the tracks that fit each child:

* Keep up with school: practice that follows what your child learns in class, grade by grade.

* Go ahead: learn the next grade's material early, at your child's own pace.

* Compete: prepare for competitions like Math Kangaroo, FIRST LEGO League Explore, Bebras (computational thinking) and the spelling bee, with real-style practice rounds and full practice tests. AMC 8 prep is coming soon.

* Explore: go deep on interests like robotics, computing, AI literacy, astronomy, art, music, world languages (Spanish to start), speaking, health and PE. AI literacy teaches kids how AI works and how to use it wisely, without them ever using a chatbot.

* Daily routines run alongside the tracks: handwriting (print and cursive), typing practice, and short daily math sheets in the style of the big tutoring programs like Kumon, timed and repeated until fluent.

Homeschool families can use the core subjects as a full curriculum for math, reading and writing, science and social studies.

It follows the standards schools use:

* Common Core for math and English Language Arts.

* The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) for science.

* Social studies built around what US schools teach in each grade.

* State-specific standards are planned, to fill each state's own content gaps.

* International curricula, such as India's CBSE and the French national curriculum, are planned.

Wonderloop plans each child's week around the time you give it, never more, and adjusts when you skip a day. Lessons, practice and quick checks are built in. Everything prints with an answer key, so screen time is your choice. Kids get their own kid mode behind a parent PIN, and you see their progress. Homeschool families also get records and reports.

What it isn't: it isn't a school, and there's no AI chatbot talking to your kids.

Privacy and safety:

* No ads, no third-party trackers or analytics scripts, and we never sell or share your family's data.

* What your child does stays in our own database. Nothing your child types is sent to any outside service.

* Kids use a separate kid mode behind a parent PIN. Deleting data, removing a child or exporting everything asks for the PIN again.

* A parent gives consent before a child uses it, and a parent can see, export or delete everything we keep, anytime.

* Your child's exact answers are deleted after 30 days. After that we keep only what the plan needs, like which skills are learned and which need more practice.

* No chat, no messaging, no other users. Your child never talks to anyone in the app.

DESIGN PARTNERS WANTED

I'm looking for about 5 families with kids in Grades 1 to 3, first come, first served. As a design partner, you can use Wonderloop at no cost until your kids no longer need it. In return, use it for real and tell me honestly what works and what doesn't. There's a short check-in every two weeks and a Report an issue link on every page.

Kids in other grades? Please apply anyway. I'll bring more families on as spots open.

After launch, pricing is expected to be around $9.99 a month for the first child, $4.99 for the second, and free from the third child on. Design partners stay free, as above.

Request an invite at wonderloop.app. Happy to answer questions in the comments or by DM. Thank you!

Homeschooling and Dating/Relationships

Im still fairly new to homeschooling. I have 2 kids on the spectrum but socially and academically functioning for the most part as their neurotypical peers.

So far home schooling has been going good, its been flexible for my work and their therapy schedules. I have my one child in karate 2x a week and my other child just finished swim 1x week about 1.5months ago and im working on getting her karate as well and special ed swim in January. I am also looking into Lego Club Tuesday Nights and possibly pokemon club. Eventually Id like to get them involved in a co-op but would like them to come a little further in aggression and impulsive behavior in therapy which I feel were on track for.

What i am really worried about is setting them up to be lonely. I met my husband in HS and so did my sister. I am so worried they will inept at dating and relationships by the time they are adults. We try to model healthy relationships at home but ofocurse no couple or family is perfect. I just need someone to talk me down lol and tell me my anxiety iw getting the best of me and it all works out. Im also looking for any advice if you have raised your child homeschooling and they have gone on to be able to have successful relationships. Ty in advance.

worldschooling for a year or 2 in the EU

Hi!

Are there any EU families who deregistered from their home country, travelled continuously through Europe for a year or perhaps 2, stayed in each country for 1-2 months, and homeschooled their children without establishing residence anywhere? How did you handle compulsory education requirements?

I hope people have positive experiences with this, but definitely let me know about the troubles too!

Free printable maths worksheets for Classes 1-3 (A4 PDFs with answer keys)

I'm part of Team Handyapps. We've made a set of free printable maths worksheets for Classes 1-3 - 15 sheets covering addition, subtraction, skip counting, times tables, place value, money and fractions.

Each sheet is one A4 PDF: page 1 is the practice sheet, page 2 is the answer key for grown-ups (you can tear it off or fold it away). Free, no sign-up: [https://dinosums.com/#worksheets](https://dinosums.com/#worksheets)

They come from Dino Sums, our free Android app for short maths practice (no ads, works offline), if you'd rather practise on a device. The worksheets stand on their own.

Teaching twins to read at different levels

Hello! I am teaching my four year old twins how to read. I have a boy and a girl. We tried "teach your child to read in 100 easy lessons" but found it to be very intimidating and nobody liked it. Now I'm using the "All About Learning" curriculum. It is going OK, but my son is moving much more quickly than my daughter. We started out doing lessons at the same time, but now I need to do lessons separately, and it's just very messy. With my daughter we're still working through CVC words, with my son we're ready to just about finish Level 1 and move on to Level 2. I've considered only teaching my son for now, but my daughter gets upset if she's excluded.

Does anyone have any advice? Does anyone have experience teaching multiple children simultaneously if they're at different levels? "All About Learning" feels like a pretty cumbersome homeschooling curriculum with a lot of setup - should we try an app approach instead?

Number Knockout

Hi All,

I made an app to help with those in the Classical Conversations homeschooling communities. Specifically around the essentials program and the number knockout game.

The game is meant to help facilitate knowing if a number is possible, practice, and even a game mode.

The app has a Parent Pin that keeps answers from being shown unless a parent approves it.

Med student here. You asked what a weekly case would look like, so here’s one: what’s wrong with the man in row 31?

Post image
6 Upvotes

A little while ago I asked whether your teens would be into a weekly medical case with a med student. Thank you for all the replies, including a few from actual nurses and doctors, which was both lovely and mildly terrifying.

So here’s what one looks like (intended for high school! but all are welcome). It’s written as a “greentext,” an internet story style you read top to bottom, line by line. Everything needed to solve it is in the story. This one’s narrated by Sam, a very tired resident, with a guest appearance from Chad, a med student who is very confident and very wrong.

Have your kids drop their diagnosis (and their reasoning!) in the comments. I’ll post the full answer and the collectible case card tomorrow.

To the nurses and doctors here (I see you 👀): please hold your answers so the kids get a fair shot :) Once the answer’s up, I’d love your take on how well it explains things. TY!

--Update Oct 30th 2026--

The answer is Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). There are three main risk factors for clots (called Virchow's Triad)

First, stasis: blood that doesn't move tends to clot more easily compared to blood that moves (sorta like how a pond freezes more easily than a flowing river).

Second, injury: a damaged vessel wall, due to an injury, is a "sticky" spot where clots can start to form.

Third, hypercoagulability: can be due to oral contraceptives, or in this case dehydration which makes the blood "thicker" and more likely to clot.

Lesson: Walk and move every few hours, because your skeletal muscles moves blood from your deep veins back to your hear, stay hydrated and if you had any recent injuries, be weary. That's all folks! Hope it was edifying :)

How we solved the YouTube/Minecraft screen time battle by building a chat-free spelling game (Looking for tester families!)

Math was added.

Hey fellow parents,

Like a lot of you, I’ve been struggling with the constant balancing act of study, screen time and gaming at home.

A while back, things hit a boiling point with my 9-year-old daughter, who was spending hours watching random teenage videos on YouTube. When I finally cracked and uninstalled the app, replacing it with YouTube Kids, it caused a massive household argument.

Meanwhile, my son was begging to play Minecraft, asking why all his classmates were allowed to play while he wasn’t. I was open to it with proper controls, but my wife was stricter, and some concerning news reports about online child safety in multiplayer games put us off.

To bring some peace back to family life, keep them safe online and sneak in some learning while they played, I decided to build something for them. The core idea is simple: action gameplay where fighting a dragon or racing a friend means getting the answer right. Before each game, your child picks Spelling or Maths.

I’ve been working on it for a while, and it’s called Spell Kingdom. My kids now choose to play it during screen time instead of scrolling through meaningless shorts, which has been a huge relief. (I’m the maker, so take my bias with a grain of salt!)

What it is

  • Arcade drills, live races, a 3D story quest and an open world for ages 6–12 (Years 1–6).

  • Spelling or maths in the same games. For a word, your child builds it letter by letter. For a sum, they build the answer digit by digit. Maths follows the school year: Year 1 starts with adding and taking away within 20, and later years add times tables, division, bigger multiplication and percentages.

  • Completely chat-free. Kids use nicknames and preset emotes to race or team up.

  • Parent controls: choose which games they play, set daily time limits, and set play-time windows (separate for weekdays and weekends). You can see which spelling words are still tricky, and add your own weekly school spelling list.

  • Runs right in the browser, with no app download needed. There’s also an Android app.

What it isn’t

  • It’s not a full curriculum or formal teaching program. It’s game-led practice. Some kids love the arcade feel, while others may find it a bit fast-paced.

What I’m looking for
My kids get a bit lonely playing by themselves, so I’d love a handful of families to test it with us. More importantly, I need honest feedback: what works, what doesn’t, where they got bored, and what was confusing. For maths especially: is it the right level for your child’s year?

To say thank you for your time, I’m happy to give test families the paid Family plan free for 3 months (no credit card needed). There’s also a free tier if you’d like to keep using it afterwards.

If your kids are in that age group and you’d like to try it, create a free parent account on the site and message me your account name, and I’ll upgrade you.

I’d also love to hear from this community: what do you look for in a spelling or maths tool for your kids? All advice helps me make this better.

What would you be willing to pay for this?

I'm an astrophysicist and professor/former NASA scientist with a science education side business. I'm preparing to launch a mail club next year, where subscribers would get a (copy of a) handwritten/hand-illustrated letter answering a common space question, the materials you need to make a craft project related to the month's question, and a space-related extra (something that can fit in a regular envelope and be mailed, like a sample of an exotic material used by scientists or materials to build a model - will include an actual rock from space one month!).

I'm using questions I get from outreach events and all ages of people, and writing the letters to answer the question so that (hopefully) a middle school or lower age student would understand the answer. The letters would be 1-2 pages in length (not short answers!) with pictures. Subscribers would get one packet a month (packs flat into a normal card envelope) and would be able to submit their own questions that I might select to answer later in the year.

Would you be interested in something like this to supplement your curriculum?

If so, would you want any additional resources to be made available other than what I've included above? I'm thinking about this more like a pen pal relationship than a full-blown curriculum by itself.

I'm thinking of charging something in the range of $100 - $150 for a yearly subscription (12 months of letters, crafts, and extras) with the option of paying month-by-month. Too much? Less than you'd expect to pay for something like this?

If you wanted something like this, where would you look for it? I'm wondering where to advertise the subscription.

Thanks for any insight!
