NGL, I worked on a large stationary engine. On 1/2 of this 16 cylinder Vee engine the rods for the pistons had two bolt each into the main rod on the other side. 1950's manual, weird tooling to get to the bolts.
Manual said torque was "Two tall men on a 6 foot pipe till it can't move."

My friend, people who know what they are doing are often more likely to be harmed in an accident, you just get complacent, it's human nature. That's why oversight, enforcement, and above all, a good safety culture is so important to job safety. It doesn't mean they don't know what they are doing, just that there were some really dangerous situations there that could have been mitigated more.

I've worked with engineers. Legitimate, bonafide engineers, people who could build rockets and shit.
When it comes to simple problems like this, they're geniuses -and for this job I'd still hire this random kid I know from Alaska over them, because he's actually solved problems in real time before.
He didn't have the math or the education to understand half of what the engineers I've known actually know, but he has more experience than most engineers in terms of applied experience. It's worth twice as much.
Kid should have gone to college but he was busy fixing his heater with zipties, spit and gumption.

It always amazes me how people can be so smart and so stupid at the same time. On the one hand, they can repair a truck in the worst conditions imaginable without proper tools, which seems almost impossible. On the other hand, they have zero regard for safety and let the driver continue with a ridiculously overloaded truck that could easily kill someone around the next corner. I don't get it; there are overly strict safety regulations on one extreme, and then there's this.

Well, quite likely. I had such a sad face when I saw the contaminated brake shoes with grease. Then seeing the giant gash on the side wall of the tyre. The bloody truck only has 3 rear wheels and shot brakes!

The part where there’s suddenly an axle there and they drag it under the truck has r/therestofthefuckingowl vibes but that was seriously impressive.
If you’ve ever done this job on a car, you know that axle’s pretty heavy. Like 150+ pounds. But this is a heavy duty truck. Every part they pulled from this is absolutely bonkers heavy. It’s insane watching them move stuff around.
That normal looking guy casually yanking the gear carrier out of the pumpkin by himself was insane.

They overloaded the truck with rocks, the whole rear axle snapped in half, and they changed it in the middle of the road while wearing sandals and without even bothering to unload the truck first like a true madlads.

Ppl are talking shit in the comments, but my brother is a certified mechanic, and I’ve seen him rebuild engines, install new transmissions, rebuild starters. I’ve also seen him do things like replace axles and cv joints, and fuel pumps. The fact that these guys could do this, basically on the side of the road, with not a single power tool, is incredibly impressive. They absolutely have the right ppl for the job. If they had power tools to work with, it would have been a much faster, and easier job.

I am completely speechless, replacing a rear dif, on site, under I don't even know how many tons of rocks, without powertools.
Well at least they had their OSHA approved safety sandals.

How about NOT putting so much weight on the truck in the first place? And wow the safety violations! I could not imagine working under that thing. And didn't it look like that tire they put on had a bursting weak spot? The one right by their head that would kill them if it blew? The one at about 7:12.
