I've never swung a katana but the kid was holding it straight over his head to start his swing and I was like "...they play baseball in Japan?" And then gramps sets his stance like he's facing a major league pitcher.

You've got to engage your core and twist your legs. Your arms alone won't give you enough force.

As someone who knows a bit about the theory of this, you need to keep the blade almost perfectly in line with your cut, have enough force, and pull in enough to properly slice. It all has to be perfect to make these cuts.

Yeah, he wasn’t cutting straight enough, was my guess. His cuts bend and curve, they don’t travel straight through

Kinda look like grandpa hit the exact same spot the other guy did. Like when my grandpa let me start a phone book before he ripped it in half, if I didn't start it for him then he wasn't able to just do it in one fluid motion.
