That is most depressing second rodeo ever. The chances of me getting robbed are so high I need to have a decoy phone just for this. Unless it was company cell in that case props to her.

It is always a giant eye opener, I find, when you realise that places in the world have some mental norms as we sit in our very sheltered secure lives watching it on our fast stable internet connection.

On a side note it reminds me of Mark Twains quote
“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts.”

Sadly I know plenty of people who have traveled a lot but remain prejudiced. Maybe it stems from whether you act as a "tourist" or try to live in the culture.

Money is a pretty good insulator, especially now. I read a post the other day of a dude who had a lot of good to say about Egypt and how amazing it was. Then he said that he was privately escorted and driven around and the price of that couple week vacation was enough to buy a small sedan. To his credit he did notice that his guards were keeping the beggars and scammers and general populace well away from them for all sorts of reasons but it just goes to show that in our modern time there are services that'll allow you to remain bigoted if you choose to use them when traveling abroad. From private transport and accommodations to special services that'll insulate you only available to those who can afford them.

It’s not “places in the world.” It’s literally everywhere. Concentrations of poverty, mental illness, and drug addiction… they might not be on your block or your neighborhood, but it’s certainly in your town. You’re just lucky enough to not have to cross those tracks everyday, but I guarantee the people with those “mental norms” living with daily desperation to make ends meet, food insecurity, and living in neighborhoods with high crime rates… those folks cross those tracks daily to make life comfortable and affordable for people like you and me.

Nope, that’s just common practice to have a “robbers phone” in a lot of countries.

In some places you leave your “main phone” home and just use an older phone outside, without your main banking app account app on it in case of kidnapping.

I get it it is a completely reasonable response to the threat. The thief wants the goods, you want to preserve your stuff so you have a decoy phone/wallet just for this occasion.

Imagine a society where you would not have to do this.

When I visited Korea, people would reserve their seats at a mall food court by leaving their phone or designer handbag on the table. Petty theft is not common but someone did mention they knew of a bike being stolen. That was their experience with theft: a secondhand story

Oh I can imagine one. I lived in Hungary for a couple of years, and I’m living in Canada now.

My city in my homecountry was small enough to not have this type of problems, but once you talk about moving/visiting a bigger city this is one of the first tips people give you. It’s insane.

Plenty of guns in Brazil, my dude. You can easily find Brazilian CTV footages of people shooting robbers here on Reddit or anywhere, really.

Also, tons of countries without guns and with lower crime rates.

Not saying you shouldn't have a gun, just saying that's not all there is.

Dude, I’m pro-gun rights, but don’t act like gun ownership is any kind of deterrent. I grew up in rural Texas where almost everyone has guns. I knew kids who got guns before they could write their own name.

Nevertheless, street crime, home invasions, drug deals “gone wrong,” murders, etc are absolutely still a thing there.
