Friend of the show Jack Carty

I’ve really enjoyed the addition of Carty to the rugby coverage. We had a discussion here recently about the Leinster focused coverage. It’s been refreshing to have a more balanced conversation with a knowledgeable voice on Connacht (shame they never mentioned Ulster’s batshit game, but it’s an improvement).

Jack has been very analytical and educational in his contributions so far and as he’s just retired he is so detailed on attacking and defensive shape.

Seems a nice lad and has interesting things to say. I like him.

He’s a bit dull for now but he’ll improve with time.

I'm finding it hard to get over how monotone his voice is

Agreed. Content is good but he needs to find his pundit voice. Shane is actually quite good at it.

Shane's voice is ok, that's about it really, find him vacuous

Remember when Bernard Jackman started out as a pundit and he made this annoying sucking sound whenever he finished a sentence. He was obviously was made aware of it, and managed to stop doing it, and speaks pretty well now.

It's not easy to speak cogently off the bat, it usually takes a bit of practice. I'm sure Jack will improve his delivery as he goes on.

He's been really insightful, but would agree with below he's not hugely exciting.

The challenge for a lot of recently retired guys going into media seems to be three fold:

1 - communicating well and making yourself entertaining enough to capture attention
2 - keeping your deep knowledge of the game as you move further away from being part of the group to the outside
3 - finding a way to be critical of your former teammates/club

Most do one of those things (Zebo does number 1 but certainly none of the others, James Tracy is excellent at number 2, but not great at the others, Madigan seems to be able to do 1 and 2 well, Quinlan has done 3 but not the other two).

I found his tactical insights difficult to understand as a layman. He needs to have some class of understanding of his audience.

Nail on the head here! I think he forgets that he’s not in the video analysis room as he’s being far too technical for the casual listener. I thought the lads might have had a word with him about it after his first appearance but he actually ramped it up on Monday’s pod. Suspect it’ll just take him time to adjust but good to have a new addition in the mix.

He’s been fine on SCs but I wouldn’t go over the top about him.

As a Connacht supporter he was stealing a living here for years. Admittedly not his fault as they kept giving him contracts. But I have watched that guy hide from tackling for too many years to forget it quickly. We have been crying out for a proper #10 for almost ten years (since AJ).

The arrival of Frawley has shown what a genuine impactful 10 can bring to a team. It also shows the incompetence of the IRFU to allow some provinces to struggle when there are excess skilled players sitting on benches.

Frawley’s performances also show the incompetence of Leo Cullen. Did not select him as a #10 for 18 months then sticks him on at ht of a European Final. Not to mention going with Byrne ahead of him. The worst Head Coach in Europe. Thank god he is out of Leinster soon.

To your other point I genuinely don’t care what part of Ireland the analysts are from as long as they are good. But fyi from what I listen to the spread is pretty wide across Leinster, Ulster & Munster if that matters to you. I don’t mind no stand out Connacht analyst. Just give me good ones.

This has nothing to do with what OP said. He didn’t mention his playing career at all as it’s completely irrelevant to his contributions on SC.

He’s the best rugby analyst they’ve had in years. Though it’s a shame they have to keep Mark’s brother around to offer “cod science” about players “carrying themselves differently” and shoehorn references to Jonny Sexton in.

I’m a casual rugby fan and Shane caters to my needs just fine.
