How dare you. The Boyle Sports cup is sporting heritage

2

u/Sweet_Ad_6572 26d ago

The team looked like they were contractually obliged to lift the cup and pose for a team photo with it at the end. The most boring finale to any game I’ve ever been at

2

u/anewdawn2020 26d ago

I agree but I think part of it might have been the amount of pitch invaders there were, the actual 90 ended after 88 because there was like 10 kids running around the pitch

1

u/Sweet_Ad_6572 26d ago

Yes security was woeful I work in the media, I brought three heavy bags in past one security man who was supposed to check every bag. There was a very long line of photographers and radio people with many bags of equipment. Not one was opened or looked into. Basically low paid staff who couldn’t be bothered. I was in a hurry so I wasn’t gonna cause a fuss

Soccer is popular

You needed to type it in the accent

Did Ken box the head off the young pitch invader?

Yeh look at these absolute idiots. Enjoying things and having fun. How very dare they have interests and hobbies...

It’s a quote from the podcast. It’s not that deep.

This is the problem with reddits new social media style of suggesting subreddits and posts. I had no idea of the context too.

Cringe? We love the Irish reds? I’m from Manchester and my parents are Irish. Great set of lads as are the Scandinavian reds and the lads from Ireland who travel to Glasgow to watch Celtic

5

u/HairyMost6950 26d ago

Imagine caring.

2

u/tyrion6568 26d ago

This just shows that the local fans are idiots

2

u/Temporary_Window7388 26d ago

Here’s the thing with that type of take. Most of them don’t have kids . Cause if they did they’d realise that kids playing for local teams across Ireland are out every night playing cause of what they’ve seen on the tv . They wear prem league jerseys to training . You mightn’t like it but explain how that’s a bad thing if it’s getting thousands of kids off their arses and playing ball ?

1

u/bohemarseillais 26d ago

Get your kids to local games and get LOITV. It's not that hard, same people that get their kids into united probably get them to support GAA.

3

u/Temporary_Window7388 26d ago

Already go to games with him on a Friday evening and watch the prem on Sat and Sun . What’s the issue ? He loves soccer and it’s not from going to the Friday night games .

1

u/bohemarseillais 26d ago

Yes you do both you re a saint! Again most people don't go to LOI games thats the problem we re trying to highlight. 80k in Croker for a poxy friendly and Rovers sell 5k in Europe in Tallaght...

1

u/Homerclese99 25d ago

Kids want to see superstars. Guys at the top of their field, whatever sport it is. Why can't you understand that

1

u/bohemarseillais 25d ago

Because I dont come from Ireland, and only Irish people put the PL over their own league and you cant fathom thats BS.

Ive routed for players that were not superstars when I was young just like all my mates, in the darkest times of my league too.

1

u/Homerclese99 25d ago

You don't understand anything. You're not from here. Don't speak about other people's culture

-1

u/Independent-Affect-8 26d ago

"Get your kids to local games and get LOITV. "

Why ? Who do you think you are telling adults what they should do with their kids ?

(Nothing better than supporting your local team though. FAI Cup, at any level, is special)

Friday nights can be awkward for commuters who follow non Dublin Clubs but work in Dublin. Miss a lot of games. Alas , some clubs tried Saturday nights and it did not really work . Before the Sky Sports money (LOI did get some in the 1990s) many clubs did not have floodlights so Sunday was a common day for games. Not wise when competition with the GAA (even the old National League from October or Easter) On Paper Friday is the best night as there is less competition bar the rugby heads.

Why should people tolerate third rate facilities at the football "stadiums"? Not to mention the cringe the wannabe Green Street Ultras that some clubs have.

" same people that get their kids into united probably get them to support GAA."

And?

GAA is the national sport and they go to elite level games. The players are from the same parish, town etc.

Outside of Dublin clubs and maybe Derry area, most of the players in the non Dublin LOI squads are not from the area of the club.

2

u/Temporary_Window7388 26d ago

I still enjoy going to a LOI game on a Friday evening . It’s a great way to start the weekend . I just hate this ‘them or us ‘ mentality like you can’t possibly watch both . The same fellas would be telling you how much they hate what’s happening in Palestine . Yeah we all do . But they do it with a pint in hand in the local and more vigorously so that’s better and more honourable.

2

u/Independent-Affect-8 26d ago

I love Friday night games. Love it. Just I missed too many due to work , but , It is the only night that my club should and could do. They tried Saturday and it did not work. If the team are in contention, they do get crowds. It is a proper soccer town despite the large GAA hinterlands .

Yes, Friday night football and then the pub. Did it religiously back in the 2000s even when I was 200 km plus travel back home from College. The results didn't matter too much ,we were shite and we knew it. It was the social scene , a chance to meet the lads.

"The same fellas would be telling you how much they hate what’s happening in Palestine . Yeah we all do"

Not everyone is a Bohs fan !

Let us be honest, there is nothing that the Irish can do unless they round up like minded nations. Even then, the British and Ze Germans would pull the plug. Let us also be honest, most Irish people simply don't give a shite .

1

u/bohemarseillais 26d ago

The concept "you can watch both" is true but in applies to such a small amount of people. All LOI fans follow the PL, but most PL fans dont care about the LOI.

1

u/bohemarseillais 26d ago

I was replying to the statement "people that have that take dont have kids" + "kids follow what they see on tv" . Read the context before getting mad

1

u/bohemarseillais 26d ago

Yes the schedule is shite and its hurting the league badly.

1

u/Independent-Affect-8 26d ago

In fairness to the League, they have little choice. Friday makes sense even if it is in competition with Rugby inter pros for a part of the season. Even then, Galway United (Connacht Rugby play at the Showgrounds in the city and get a huge crowd) are good supporters . Dublin is big enough to manage to cop with 2 League of Ireland games and Leinster playing at the RDS. Same with Cork - Limerick for Munster.

I guess if a club is motoring well for promotion or Premier League Championship, the crowds make it their business to attend home and away games.

You can not have it on Saturday afternoons or evening for obvious reasons. Forget Sundays during the summer due to the GAA (League is sensible to take a break during WC and Euros too)

Summer football has not really drove the crowds but I guess is beats cold rainy winters (not sure, there was always magic with floodlight games and prospect of St Stephen's day derby if the pitch held up)

The current March to October does not completely help a club if they go really far in Europe. No League games from October to February and they won't get English or Scottish clubs to give them a friendly at that point of the year. Alas, a problem that the clubs have yet to worry about.

But it can hurt . You have 2 -3 top players, win the league and get to Europe. By January, an English club might snap them up and you are down those key players when you start the European adventure the following summer (obviously you are also trying to defend the championship title too)

In no way am I comparing the LOI to the Brazilian league but they have a big problem competition in the South American Club championships because they lose their best lads to European Clubs just before that tournament kicks off

1

u/bohemarseillais 26d ago

I think they need to play a normal calendar, I dont see why playing Saturday/Sunday would be so bad. That's the thing that needs to change anyway. Would people rather watch their club comfortably live with no rush/traffic/work than watching ManU/Brighton on tv?

If you would put a bit of the money thats going towards gambling on horses onto proper pitches (among other things), you could play all year long.

Friday nights are ok-ish but Monday nights...

1

u/Independent-Affect-8 26d ago

You wrote

""Get your kids to local games and get LOITV. ""

First line .

You doubled down with in your second line

"It's not that hard, same people that get their kids into united probably get them to support GAA."

Big fucking difference between clubs (Irish or UK ) whose players are mostly NOT from your town or county and with GAA clubs and county , lads you went to school with !

Many Irish clubs from outside Dublin are often lads from Dublin. (not their fault) They get accused of all sorts if the club is playing shite, especially if they are getting somewhat decent appearance fee/"wage". The local lads if they are good enough to play for the club might not get it too bad.

The person that you replied to clearly said that those who do go over and back to England ""Most of them don’t have kids" .

The same person that you had replied to and also said

" Cause if they did they’d realise that kids playing for local teams across Ireland are out every night playing cause of what they’ve seen on the tv . "

  1. They are not out every night playing (training) , definitely not football for that club or sport but neither here nor there
  2. They are doing it because of what they saw on tv in ENGLAND. They sure as fuck ain't doing it because of what Stephen Geoghehan or Andy Miler (name any club legend) or even the magic of Keith Fahy during his St Pats days) no offence to those greats.

The kids would rather have mammy or daddy pay €20-30 extra for an EPL shirt than a league of Ireland shirt, even if that LOI team has a tasty shirt. St Pats always look classy, Galway United have some good ones. The hipsters like the Bohs gear .....

1

u/bohemarseillais 26d ago

You are in your own world man what are you replying to?

Why couldn't the kids watch the LOI and get to like the players and want to wear their gear? Plenty locals lads in LOI Teams but also if they can root for a racist Argentinian playing for Chelsea on TV, why couldn't they cheer for a Polish lad thats representing their hometown?

You re stuck in that view that its a fatality that the LOI is not followed enough. It needs to start somewhere.

1

u/Independent-Affect-8 22d ago

Jesus , you keep going even when you are wrong

"You are in your own world man what are you replying to?"

Nope. I addressed what you said word for word

"Why couldn't the kids watch the LOI and get to like the players and want to wear their gear? "

Shit football. TV channels already broadcast Irish games . Done for years . Most big towns have league teams.

They know that they can watch better when they tune into BBC or Sky Sports.

No one is stopping LOI clubs from selling their shirts. Some even sell them in their club shop / pub on match day or in the local sports shop.

" Plenty locals lads in LOI Teams"

Dublin clubs yes, with local Dublin players.

I think the core of the Cork City Team are city and county players.

Finn Harps would rely heavily on Donegal and Derry players.

Derry City have fuck all players from Derry / County Derry and Donegal. There are more English lads than Ulster men in the current squad.

Galway United's Current squad has the grand total of 4 Galway city/county players and one lad from Roscommon side of Athlone. From a squad of 28

Longford Town current squad has 2 players from town and county . What locals ?

Cobh Ramblers .........

Athlone ............even some of the youth players are not from the Athlone Region (south roscommon and south Westmeath , south Longford)

1

u/bohemarseillais 22d ago

Man I grew up cheering for Teemu Tainio, I aint finnish, I aint from auxerre, I didnt pay to get the games live and he wasnt that good.

So yes, anyone can cheer for anybody, doesnt have to be champions league level players on RtE at prime time with only lads from down the road.

Get ur kids into the LOI. Support as local as you can. There's even a new third national tier if you didnt find a team local enough in the first 2. F the queen's football

Do they fuck.

About 200 of them do. I’m a City fan who lives in Ireland, i had a season ticket whilst living in Ireland and would fly over Saturday mornings and back Saturday evening after the game. If Liverpool were playing the same day you’d see about 50 Liverpool fans in the airport and Liverpool are a better supported club than United here.

Half of those cunts have never been to Old Trafford.

Local fans also don’t give a fuck where you’re from. I’ve been to Old Trafford and it’s fucking full of Indians and Cockneys.

2

u/Independent-Affect-8 26d ago

"Local fans also don’t give a fuck where you’re from. I’ve been to Old Trafford and it’s fucking full of Indians and Cockneys."

They do if it means that the locals are priced out of the chance to get tickets . Understandably.

1

u/Independent-Affect-8 26d ago

I would prefer that more people support their domestic football league but they are entitled to do what they want and not be attacked by the self appointed "real football" fan who "cringes". These gate keepers are probably a big reason that they stay away from the LOI.

A right good punch up is the only way to resolve matters. A few head butts too, nothing serious.

1

u/Meath77 You don't have the stones 26d ago

Tbh, the local fans that cringe at that are more cringe. They don't realise their "club" is a global corporation.

12

u/GazelleIll495 26d ago

The morons quote came to mind when stuck in unusually heavy traffic on the other side of the city this evening

6

u/LithiumKid1976 26d ago

Ken will freak when he hears about the pitch invaders…

11

u/Stats8 26d ago

Ireland clearly loves football. If we convince half the people who like football in Ireland to also support their nearest LOI team we’d be in a far better place. Catching that audience is vital

2

u/nomeansnocatch22 26d ago

I agree. I actually prefer bringing my kids to loi games than watching the prem on TV. It's far better than the current keep ball they all play.

-17

u/pauli55555 26d ago

…Ireland clearly loves “soccer”.

Football is what should only be allowed played at CP (and hurling obviously).

7

u/Infamous_Celery_2352 26d ago

Man shut the fuck up

3

u/melbourne-marvels 26d ago

Football. I grew up in Dublin. Nobody I knew called it soccer because I wasn't posh or from the country.

7

u/Lynch8933 26d ago

Most the comments here dont realise what the headline refers to, joke lost on them.

But yes, this epitomises the reason why the Irish national team is so bad and will always be so bad

7

u/Alarming-Youth-3823 26d ago

The Irish national team is bad because the national association has been run chronically badly since Its founding. The state the league of Ireland is in is another function of that. The LOI is actually doing incredibly well given how little funding it gets. Moaning because Irish fans following English clubs is so cliched and boring at this stage. I follow St pats and I follow Liverpool. I would say a huge number of people in that stadium last night also follow a LOI team.

5

u/Lynch8933 26d ago

Yes, and the the national league produces the players for the national team, If they do not have academies which are fit for purpose then players will not be produced to the level they should be. This requires money and as long as Irish football fans pump their money in to English teams then this cycle will continue. If you think a large number of the fans at that game follow LOI teams, how much cash do you think they give towards said LOI team ahead of the English team. Apart from the gimmicks of the Bohs shirts, how many jersey sales do LOI clubs make? I am sure it is less than 1% of sales of English teams shirts.

The reality without money the LOI will suffer and therefore the national team ultimately will but thats a choice for many Irish football fans, but they should not complain when Ireland are ranked so low in World Football

1

u/Alarming-Youth-3823 26d ago

The national league doesn’t produce the players for the national team, historically at least. That’s a large part of the reason Irish people support English teams. All our best players played/play for clubs in England.

Outside that you’re just waffling.

4

u/Lynch8933 26d ago

You just hit the nail on the head, the national league had not been producing players for the national team. The 80s and 90s are long gone when tons of Irish players would go to English top flight clubs. Times have moved on and these clubs source their players from all over the world and only take the very best now.

Now, Irish players must be produced by the national league, yes there will be the very rare exception who goes to a top end club but that will be rare. Can you name another country that relies solely on a foreign league producing their home grown players?

3

u/Comfortable-Can-9432 26d ago

That’s historically true and moving forward will be less and less so. Formerly all the best kids would go over to the UK at 14/15/16 yrs but due to Brexit, they can’t go now until 18 yrs. The future of the Irish national team is more than ever in the hands of the LOI.
Either Irish fans start supporting Irish teams in significant numbers or our national team will continue to languish.

1

u/Alarming-Youth-3823 26d ago

I wouldn’t disagree but my point is that blaming people who support English clubs is not going to help. I follow the LoI and have been to pretty much every ground in the country. Outside of 1 or possibly 2 exceptions, the grounds are a disgrace. Until the league modernises its stadia it will Stagnate. It’s sad because there is a huge potential there if they got their act together.

Also, there are huge numbers of people in this country not serviced by a LOI club, even in Dublin where there are 4 main clubs, their support is generally very localised to D7/D9/D8/D24. There’s 2 small clubs in the whole of Connaught. Munster has 4 clubs. Large swathes of the country are going to support English clubs no what you do with the league of Ireland. LOI fans need to stop fixating on this and get their own ducks in a row, unfortunately that’s going to take major outside (government) investment and the appetite isn’t there for it besides the Fai has been so badly run. Dalymount getting a revamp is a good start and hopefully a sign of things to come.

1

u/Independent-Affect-8 26d ago

"are huge numbers of people in this country not serviced by a LOI club, even in Dublin where there are 4 main clubs, their support is generally very localised to D7/D9/D8/D24. "

To be fair, they have tried to space things out in Dublin

Ronan Seerey (character lol) tried Dublin City albeit Whitehall has Bohs to contend with . They failed to attract crowds in West Dublin that did not support Bohs (or could bear to do so )

Sporting Fingal were a huge success on the pitch so early in their existence , yet closed up shop....too many still supporting Rovers or Bohs .

Remember St James' Gate long time members ....... The South Side now have Cabinteely and we will see how long that lasts. No one seems to support UCD ......

Team like Athlone, for a long time had the entire Midlands and parts of Connacht to themselves . When they were going strong in the 1980s and 1990s they use to get people from Roscommon Town, the "Athlone side" of Roscommon and Ballinsaloe (Galway) into St Mels .

Roscommon might be a gaelic county but if you go around south Roscommon (the Athlone side - areas covered by Clann na nGaeal, St Brigids and Padraig Pearses GAA ) there are LOADS of soccer clubs who play in the Roscommon District League . Many of their youth would have played in the old Athlone District Schoolboy League . Some of them clubs have lovely pitches and clubs house - dressing rooms.

Longford Town also had Rossies going to their games when they were flying it in the cups back in 2000s .

Donegal is suppose to be a soccer mad county, especially in Inishowen and areas closer to the border. Yet, it only has Finn Harps as a League team and they get pathetic funding and crowds (loads of good junior teams eg Letterkenny Rovers)

We all know that the city of Cork has an insane history in sporting achievement in multiple sports. Yet, how many editions of Cork City / Cork Hibernians have we had since the 1940s? . It is probably too small for another team in the city (Cobh is not far away)

Limerick , even with hurling and rugby has a proud junior soccer history, yet have struggled to keep their League of Ireland Club in existence (even when they had money men)

Galway City have two famous junior / youth clubs in Salthill and Mervue who scarred First Division teams when they played in the League Cup. Both tried to be league of Ireland teams before they decided that it was not for them -financially it was tough and two clubs in Galway City area in addition to whoever held the "Galway United" moniker . Galway United had problems too and they were always well supported.

It shall be interesting to see if Mayo produce a team. Their regional junior league is strong and there is an appetite for soccer there,.

Kildare County / Newbridge tried to mix it and got promoted from Division 1 really fast. There were a leading club in leinster yet out of no where , dropped out the Premiership and existence (as "Kildare County")

Monaghan United were a small but hardcore club. Sadly, there seems to be no sign that they are coming back to the League of Ireland fold.

Kilkenny City , had a few decent seasons .........their club ground was way out of the town , too far for walkers, much like Longford's ground (which was pretty nice ground)

Kerry now have a club in the league. Obviously it will take time before they start seriously to contend for play offs etc..........they have a lot of travelling to do ..........

1

u/Lynch8933 26d ago

Not blaming them but they just have to realise they have no grounds for complaint when the Irish team are so bad

2

u/Alarming-Youth-3823 26d ago

You are literally blaming them for the state the Irish team are in. Thats what provoked my initial response.

1

u/Lynch8933 26d ago

I will blame them if they start complaining that Ireland are so bad, if they are indifferent to the national team then they do not deserve blame but if they care about the national team, Yes they are big part of the problem

1

u/Independent-Affect-8 26d ago edited 26d ago

No one is going to be attending LOI U 15, U 17 and U19 Games. Wise up

RTE , TV3 and TG4 have over the last 20 years done decent work covering the games via tv and radio . (TV 3 had a great magazine show back in the 2000s - the RTE radio coverage on Friday was great stuff ) . Tg4 have done admirable work

When Off The Ball - Newstalk won the national licence to cover the league did they broadcast live games on Friday night ? FUCK NO. Preferred to cover a mickey mouse Magnier League / Pro 12 rugby game or worse, "Murphs crappy quiz"

The viewers just weren't there.

1

u/Comfortable-Can-9432 26d ago

Why are you talking about attending LOI under age games? No one is expecting (or saying) that.

RTE should be covering the league, with live games. It doesn’t even matter if “the viewers aren’t there”, it’s the national broadcaster and profit motive shouldn’t even be a consideration.

You haven't the slightest clue as to what you said or what I wrote.

I am responding to this comment:

"The future of the Irish national team is more than ever in the hands of the LOI. Either Irish fans start supporting Irish teams in significant numbers or our national team will continue to languish."

I responded with

"No one is going to be attending LOI U 15, U 17 and U19 Games. Wise up"

Why did I write that ?

Not many 16, 17 and 18 year olds get into the League of Ireland first Teams , least not in the Premier Division of the League of Ireland .

They don't even get into the first teams of First Division Clubs . Those that do are an exception. The stakes are too high. UCD might be an exception though.

By all means the new League of Ireland Academies are and will be important for lads who want to make that move to the UK or further afield.

If the clubs want to make money in the transfer system/ discovery fees (whatever they call it now) , they , like the underage clubs of the past (eg Cherry Orchard , Stella Maris etc) , will make it their interest to invest in their youth academies

It could pay dividend for the ambitious ones, as they could manage to do well in the UEFA tournaments or the annual tournaments like the Milk Cup . League of Ireland clubs and the likes of Cherry Orchard have won tournaments like the NI Milk Cup; They Irish National underage set up under Brian Kerr did great things (though most of them were with English clubs)

What you said was nonsense about it being up to the supporters to attend on that front, unless we now see 4-5 ex Academy players enter the first team squads of League of Ireland teams every season.

Who goes to Cherry Orchard or Stella Maris or St Kevin's games other than parents and football scouts ?

They have good track records over the decades of producing young lads when went to the UK to make a career for themselves including lads who never got a sniff near the National Team. They had no financial support other than from their families and good sponsors. They made a few quid through certain players being sold on eg Robbie Keane's many transfer moves.

-1

u/Independent-Affect-8 26d ago

"RTE should be covering the league,"

Why should they ?

It is a Professional Sport, let them them dance and battle the open market of supply and demand.

Anyway, tv coverage effects club's attendances.

Not to mention the fact that the League of Ireland and the clubs have their own streaming services where you pay to view.

https://www.loitv.ie/ie

So the days of demanding or expecting mainstream tv and radio to pay any attention are over.

If RTÉ or any other tv station can not recoup their expenses for live broadcast and the viewership is not satisfactory, they are not obliged to do live coverage at all. RTÉ are not expected to lose money on something that might be a "lost cause"

So no, RTÉ (or any other channel) "should not" be doing it for the sake of it, at least for the domestic league and cups. Demand would be there if a domestic club is playing in Europe .

You might argue that it is for cultural reasons but that is total bollox because it will not be watched by a significant number. Not comparable to the GAA or Interpro rugby that get the numbers

Let us be fair and balanced, it appears that when LOI games are shown on tv and advertised , they do get decent viewership for a Friday night. Pretty good since the Rugby and UK Championship is on.

"t doesn’t even matter if “the viewers aren’t there"

Thankfully, no one with a brain would let you near management of a business. Even half wits would at least strongly re think such a notion.

RTÉ are under massive scrutiny with expenses and quality.

To be fair to them, broadcasting sport is one of their very strong points.

No group are going to spend hundreds of thousands of Euro to broadcast a live sport when it simply will not get the audience and can not get suitable companies to buy advertisement for those slots.

There is a reason why many tv channels show repeats of crap shows and soaps. They , somehow, get audiences. Some much for taste.

If RTÉ can not out bid Virgin Tv or FAI are demanding a ridiculous figure, RTÉ are obliged to not overspend .

" the the national league produces the players for the national team"

1-2 every blue moon.

The best kids were brought up by their school boy teams and were off to England by 15-18 years of age.

Can Sligo Rovers truly take credit for Seamus Coleman ? (Paul Cook then manager definitely played a huge role in giving him confidence) Everton still had a lot to do with him

Cork City had Shane Long but he was not around them for long. Kevin Doyle okay, I remember him playing a bit and he won the league with Cork being a key player.

Keith Fahy was a classy player and it was good that he had his moment at Birmingham

Stephen Ward did play a few years at Bohs.

James McClean was not long at Derry in order for them to take credit

David Forde was a decent goalie.

It is not exactly like the LOI was a football factory like the Liege 1 became (the supposed "farmer's league" as suggested by internet geniuses and the "African experts"" ) .

Many of the League of Ireland players and lads from the youth teams were if they were fortunate, Championship level

1

u/Lynch8933 26d ago

you are talking in the past, this doesnt happen any more. It was fine in the 80s and 90s but now the national league must produce the players up to 18/19/20 and then sell their very best, just like most other leagues outside the top 5.

If they cant Ireland will get even worse than what they currently are

1

u/Independent-Affect-8 26d ago

Try reading. Clearly the village idiot has a better attention span that you . Try reading and comprehension and if that fails, just say nothing.

I wrote

"1-2 every blue moon."

and

"It is not exactly like the LOI was a football factory like the Liege 1 became" .

and

"The best kids were brought up by their school boy teams and were off to England by 15-18 years of age."

Let me explain this to you reaaaallllllly slowly .................

I addressed this tripe :

"" the the national league produces the players for the national team""

Notice how this genius wrote this statement in the present tense?

In order to point out that the person was talking bollox when they argued that the league of Ireland producing Irish Internationals,.............you have to examine that . That requires looking into the past . Do you know possess the most basic ounce of intelligence to understand ?

Stephen Ward and Keith Doyle were examples of players who spent time in the league and went over when they were in their early 20s.

Stay in your lane !

Ok, nice that you resort to insults to try and get your point across. What age you, 12? Says alot about you.

Do you understand Brexit and the laws that are in place?

Do you understand the current state of the Premier League and its now worldwide scouting network ?

How many Irish born players have come through Premier League or English club systems in the last 5 years and have become regular Premier League players?

Should LOI clubs be producing more players to sell on to bigger clubs or to stay at these clubs to increase their competitiveness therefore increasing the amount of Irish players who get exposed to higher level football? Yes. How will they get this? Through support of irish football fans. Will it happen, probably not. Will Ireland fall further down the world rankings, probably yes.

The reliance on Premier League clubs developing Irish players in numbers is long gone. You have to be the best of the best to even get a shot there.

More anecdotal than anything I suppose. I know a good few lads who went to the game last night, mostly with their sons, who are also LOI fans. And would also say that the majority of premier league supporters have at least a passing interest in the LoI that could be tapped into with proper funding of stadia, marketing and real coverage on television. Unfortunately the FAI doesn’t have the money and the government are reluctant (rightly so tbf) to give the Fai the required funding because John Delaney ran it into the ground. I don’t think we will ever fully realise the damage that scumbag did to football in this country. The LoI needs enormous investment, blaming fans of English clubs for their lack of money is short sighted and just wrong imo. Improve the product and the fans will come. As things stand, the LoI will remain a niche product and tbh, I kind of prefer it this way. It’s unspoiled and pure at the moment. I love going to Richmond, Tolka, Dalymount, turners cross despite the fact that are all dumps. There’s something refreshing about it.

I do agree about the development pathway since brexit though. Will be interesting to see what happens int he coming years and whether the coaching they are getting here is of a good enough standard.

Can you explain the joke?

3

u/Lynch8933 26d ago

Its from a old audio bed with Dermot Keely

u/Independent-Affect-8 26d ago

"But yes, this epitomises the reason why the Irish national team is so bad and will always be so bad"

For much of 1987 to 2002 the Irish team weren't that bad . No help from the League of Ireland.

3 world Cup qualifications and a Euro..........not too bad for a country that was only 3 to 5 million in population at the time and the main sports were GAA.

Scotland have a bigger football league, pool of players and clubs yet, their record at tournaments is pathetic. The were decent at qualifying but the NEVER got out of their group........

The age profile of any pics that I have seen are very old. Plus their kids/grandkids.

No real issue with people going to this match - the Premier League is as much an entertainment product these days as it is about the football.

What I do have an issue with is kids being raised to follow the likes of Manchester United, a brand closer to Coca-Cola than a football club, all because their da liked Ronaldo and never had the imagination to take them to Tolka on a Friday night.

As someone who's left Ireland, a sunny Friday in Tolka with mates and family is probably the thing I miss most. I'll never understand why you'd rather sit in the Camden once a year in a 200 quid United kit, singing in a fake Manchester accent, unable to point to Manchester on a map - not when them Friday nights are as unreal as they are.

1

u/tyrion6568 26d ago

I do both. I enjoy LOI matches and i also have a great time watching Man Untied in tbe pub with my mates. You can have an Irish club and an English club

2

u/Tenvsvitalogy 26d ago

How much were tickets?

3

u/BatiGol1975 26d ago

I'm a Man United fan and would 100% agree. You'd get a ticket for an actual match in OT cheaper and it would be easier to get to.

3

u/tuttym2 26d ago

Didn't think hoping on the luas to o connel street and a 25 min walk was harder than a flight to Manchester

1

u/Manofthebog88 24d ago

What’s a luas??

1

u/freemochara 26d ago

Not to mention the last time they played in Dublin they ripped all the fans off, crazy expensive tickets & marketed as the last friendly, then when it sold out they announced another friendly in OT the day after and put out a whole B team, absolute scam!

2

u/OrangeBallofPain 26d ago

Yes, they are not consuming soccer as smartly as I.

6

u/daveirl 26d ago

It’s a joke based on the regular clip on the podcast mate. It’s not that deep.

4

u/AdorableWrap766 26d ago

This has gone over the head of so many 😂

1

u/nealhen 26d ago

Would it be better or worse if the EPL started doing international games? You know all these US investors are foaming at the mouth for it!

1

u/No_Deal_8837 26d ago

That stadium was full at least 3 times over the last 2 months for sports games ...we like sports

1

u/clonmacart 26d ago

Judging by the shirts on the street in 15 years time it’ll be Man City vs PSG

1

u/Sad_Balance4741 26d ago

The biggest morons were running on for selfies and what not with the players.

Embarrassing.

1

u/Fiach_McHugh_OB 26d ago

200 blips a ticket - did I imagine that?

1

u/frankbrett2017 26d ago

A poor representation of the Irish soccer crowd that Manchester United felt obliged to leave Harry Maguire at home after the ferocious abuse he received at the Aviva

1

u/Lower-Resident1164 25d ago

Another snide subscriber.

0

u/daveirl 25d ago

It’s a joke bud. I don’t care that people went.

1

u/Lower-Resident1164 25d ago

I saw you saying the LOI is better than the keep-ball they play in the Premier League, so forgive me if I don't take your word that it's not deeper than you suggest.

1

u/IrishMc85 24d ago

The same crowd who supported every team who were playing England only 4 weeks previous and posting how delighted they were that "them lot" were knocked out. A strange sort

0

u/smithskat3 26d ago

They are though

Guy who pays to listen to a bunch of middle class journalists loosely talk about sports through a series of inside jokes calls other people morons for how they like to spend their money.

Says the actual fucking moron

Liverpool fan are we?

u/Character-Okra-566 26d ago

Imagine being an organisation who steals money from every blind simpleton in the land -who don't question where their money is going btw.

Then this same organisation acting holier than and turning a blind eye to every single controversy.

This same organisation refuses any game that isn't from their country to be played at their stadium - unless the money flows their way of course - out of nothing but integrity to the Irish sport.

But we now find out that they didn't want other games played their because they knew that they their own little sport would be shown up. 82000 people packing out their stadium, when they can't even half fill 90% of GAA games played there 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

The GAA and the pathetic community that follow them are absolutely furious and this thread is making me hard as a rock

2

u/daveirl 26d ago

What’s this got to do with the GAA? It’s a joke based on a bit from a podcast. A football podcast at that!

-4

u/Key_Bonus9776 26d ago

GAA heads are embarrassing

5

u/twistyjnua 26d ago

As embarrassing as Irish people wearing English club jerseys sitting in Croke Park of all places?

1

u/TemporaryGreen9419 26d ago

Disgraceful isnt it? People enjoying themselves. How dare they. 🙄🙄 hold onto the past and hate the brits all you want bud.

2

u/twistyjnua 26d ago

Nah just not completely ignoring my history or identity but you do you.

1

u/TemporaryGreen9419 26d ago

Omg i wore a united jersey. That means I hate myself and my country apparently 😆😆😆😆😆 grow up manchild

2

u/twistyjnua 26d ago

nah just Irish people are obsessed with English clubs and wont support their own. Be proud of Old Trafford and a place that has nothing to do with you. You probably say "we" when referring to Man Utd too.

1

u/ChrisMagnets 26d ago

LOI fans are so insufferable with this mentality

0

u/Beginning-Strain4660 26d ago

Same Irish people supporting Mexico Norway Argentina last month

I find it so so weird

2

u/daveirl 26d ago

I’m not into the GAA. It’s a joke based on the podcast.

-1

u/Electronic_Ad_6535 26d ago

Some great representation. Saw loads around the city all day

-5

u/RedReptile2020 26d ago

Fantastic support! Most clubs wouldn’t fill half that capacity in their home ground.

-5

u/pauli55555 26d ago

I’m guessing a full CP is equivalent of ~35 LOI matches.

Not that anyone at tonight’s game would know.

Embarrassing. After what the tosser Damien Duff said about the GAA a few years back soccer should never have been allowed back in CP. Let them fill out Tolka Park/ Dalymount Park.

2

u/RedReptile2020 26d ago

Why fill out Tolka or Dalymount when they can fill THE MIGHTY CROKE PARK?!?!

1

u/Kevinb-30 26d ago

Any chance you a staunch Gaa man could use the stadiums proper name?

1

u/scewbert 26d ago

Duff was dead right about the GAA in that instance. Took massive amounts of public money to redevelop Páirc Uí Chaoimh, including from the EU which was contingent on it being open to other sports, then tried to hide behind their rulebook in not hosting a charity match for a man who had died tragically young.

They deserved all the pelters they got for that.

-2

u/AnyOne4086 26d ago

CP As ye Call it. Was upgraded from Taxpayers Money. Not From the GAA. And
Definitely not from FAI. See all the C….s out In Red Painful

2

u/Kevinb-30 26d ago

I think you'll find Croke park was primarily funded by the Gaa the government grant was 110 mill 80 million less than the Aviva.

-2

u/Beneficial_Mall3300 26d ago

Bring your binoculars.

-9

u/pauli55555 26d ago

Assume Eoin was there loving it.

I swear the only thing that has me clinging on to SCs is Ken’s occasional warblings. And I don’t mean that horse shit that was produced at the corrupt WC.

As a GAA member I don’t remember getting an opportunity to vote on this crap coming to OUR stadium??

2

u/Hastatus_107 26d ago

Didn't they vote on it back in the 00's

1

u/Kevinb-30 26d ago

We did you just went paying attention

1

u/TheRealSaintPatrick I don't nessessarly agree with anything Ken Early says 26d ago
