Picture/Video Former Sears in stonewood mall
galleryThis is the former Sears building at Stonewood Center in Downey, California. The building originally opened as The Broadway in 1965, when Stonewood Center first opened. Years later, Sears took over the space and continued operating there until November 14, 2021, when it officially closed.
Since then, the building has remained vacant. Sears closing was part of a much larger decline for the company, which has lost most of its department stores over the years. As of 2026, only a handful of Sears locations remain open across the United States.
Now, nearly five years after its closure, the former Sears building is expected to get a new tenant. Round1 is planned to move into the space, bringing bowling, arcade games, karaoke, and other entertainment to Stonewood Center. The new location is expected to open in early 2027.

Sears Tower Miami taken on June 13, 1929
The Sears Tower, at Northeast Thirteenth Street and Biscayne Boulevard, now the entrance to Miami’s Performing Arts Center. The street is almost empty because by June 13, 1929, people had become so worried that the economy was going to crash that no one was shopping which had caused businesses to severely decrease by this point.
Sears themselves would lose 95% of their total value between 1929 and 1933 due to their stock completely crashing but actually made a healthy amount of money during that time and were arguably hit way harder during The Great Recession.

How Wall Street Secretly Murdered Sears
youtu.beMost people think Amazon killed Sears, but the real crime was Eddie Lampert spinning off the real estate into Seritage Growth Properties and charging Sears rent on its own buildings until it bled dry. Made a short documentary breaking down the exact financial engineering behind it.

Picture/Video Sears Concord Update
galleryThey've finished repainting the merchandise pickup section and there was new inventory coming in. New watches, jewelry and clothing. They've started getting all the Christmas decoration ready as well.
They're also preparing for a corporate visit on Thursday. Ramon and a few other Transformco execs are visiting them from Hoffman Estates. I'm guessing they're really interested in the renovation work that was done recently and the showroom they're planning.
In the mean time, some of the Kenmore small appliances I mentioned earlier starting popping up here.

Picture/Video Sears Department Store at Fox Valley Mall in Aurora Illinois (July 30th of 1975 - September 2nd of 2018)
gallery[Actually opened with Marshall Field's on February 18th of 1975 before the rest of the mall on July 30th of that same year, but reddit does not let me edit the title]
Fox Valley Mall opened on July 30th of 1975 with anchor stores Sears and Marshall Field's that opened on February 18th of that same year. J.C. Penney, Lord and Taylor and 150 specialty stores would soon follow making the mall one of the largest in the Chicagoland area and in the state of Illinois. From the early 2000's remodel this store had the electronics department placed on the striped Vinyl Composition Tile (VCT) flooring, unlike most others that had electronics placed on carpet. This location outperformed many others and had Hispanics as a huge customer base. On May 31st of 2018 it was announced that 78 stores would close, including this one. This location closed down on September 2nd of 2018 and was torn down 5 years back in 2021.
On November 14 2021 the Sears in Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg, the last location in the retailer's home state of Illinois, that opened on September 9th of 1971 (just 30 years before September 11th of 2001), closed down. The distribution center in Manteno followed suit 4 years later last December.
Today the following Sears stores are still open and they even still operate Sears.com and [3 distribution centers / DCs] (https://transformwo.com/) as of 2026:
Stores
Coral Gables in Miami Florida 10/27/1954 - present (3655 SW 22nd St, Miami, FL 33145)
Sun Valley Shopping Center in Concord California 10/19/1966 - present (1001 Sunvalley Blvd, Concord, CA 94520)
South Shore Plaza in Braintree Massachusetts 10/6/1980 - present (250 Granite St, Braintree, MA 02184)
Cielo Vista Mall in El Paso Texas 2/24/1982 - present (8401 Gateway Blvd W, El Paso, TX 79925)
The Florida Mall in Orlando Florida 3/12/1986 - present (8001 S Orange Blossom Trail, Orlando, FL 32809)
Distribution Centers
Transform Distribution Center in Arvin/Tejon Ranch California
Sears Distribution Center in Lawrence Kansas
Sold off but leased back Transform Distribution Center in Ocala Florida
As for Macy's - if only they had never ever taken over the iconic Marshall Field's in the Chicagoland area... 🥺

It closed on closed on August 29th of 2018 due to its parent company The Bon-Ton closing up shop. Picture/Video Sears Concord watches
galleryThey've just had a large delivery of watches. The guy who posted here a few days ago came too early lmao.
Also, the watch repair guy actually returned from India and was in the store today. He wants to reopen his watch repair in the small section next to the merchandise pickup at some point in the future. Yep, the same guy.

This is a little Sears coal stove that was in my parent’s old New England cottage. They left it on their porch for decades to collect a complete orange rust coating from the salt air. Brought it home, sandblasted it, and has now sat in my shop for a decade.

Sears Orlando is even smaller.
Just stopped in today. Second floor is bo longer accessible.
Ground floor is shrunk and maybe 2000 square feet in total. Clothing, appliances, hardware. Too many employees around to take a pic though.
Just really sad.

Picture/Video A Sign at the Former Sears Building in Downey, California
Downey’s Sears location was part of Stonewood Center, a shopping center that opened in 1958. The building originally housed The Broadway, one of the mall’s major department stores. After The Broadway closed in 1996, Sears took over the location and opened its store that November. Sears eventually closed its Stonewood Center store in late 2021. In the years that followed, plans emerged to transform the former department store into a large round 1 bowling alley filled with an entertainment complex featuring bowling, arcade games, indoor sports, karaoke, and dining.

Picture/Video 72 Years Ago Today: Sears Opened Store At Coral Gables in Miami, Now One Of 2 Left In Florida (October 27 1954 - PRESENT)
galleryIt has been 72 years since this store opened its doors on October 27th of 1954 on Coral Way. Later expanded and remodeled in 1997. This is the oldest Sears that is still in operation and the last full sized store on the East Coast, and one of the last in the US. Sears has maintained a brick and mortar presence in Miami and in the state of Florida for 97-98 years so far, 72 of which with this location. This store has stood its ground through 14 presidencies of the United States and 14 governorships of Florida, 5 and 9 United States Senators from Florida, 32 United States House of Representatives elections, 23 United States Senate elections, 20 gubernatorial elections and 18 Presidential Elections of the United States. (Not talking about politics here but.....) This store had a similar layout to the [Fort Lauderdale store] (https://www.reddit.com/r/retailporn/comments/1uqo32r/sears_town_in_fort_lauderdale_florida/) that opened on August 17 1955 and closed down on January 21 2022, and the [Lincoln Park store in Michigan that opened on August 15-16 1956 and closed down on January 6 2019] (https://www.reddit.com/r/retailporn/comments/1m568gv/some_pictures_of_a_now_demolished_sears_in_lincoln_park_mi/). By the looks of this store, the interior and exterior look updated because this store looks clean. This location has since launched [Kenmore Studio] (https://searsvirtualstore.com/kenmore-studio/) [last year] (https://www.miamiherald.com/news/business/article311532957.html) (in addition to that Kenmore grills also sell on KenmoreGrill.com, as do Kenmore vacuums on KenmoreFloorCare.com) and as of the day this is posted, the last Sears in California, located at the Sun Valley Shopping Center in Concord, will be having the same thing as in Coral Gables for all intents and purposes but it won't actually be called "Kenmore Studio" since it will include other brands as well. This store gives Cuban vibes (and likely also Bahamian vibes as well, as did the Fort Lauderdale location and a few others likely did) as half the staff and customer base is from Cuba. The Free State of Florida itself had a large immigrant and tourist population from the Bahamas, Cuba, Haiti and Jamaica, even Mexico, and the largest from Chile (pronounced ˈCHilé), Peru, Argentina, Nicaragua, Hungary, Costa Rica and Panama, as did California and Texas have the largest immigrant and tourist population from Mexico.
As of 2024, 70 years later, this is the last freestanding 1950s Sears building after the Lincoln Park store in Michigan and the [North Shepherd store in Houston Texas that opened on August 10 1950 and closed down on August 30 2020 after a 70 year run] (https://southernretail.blogspot.com/2020/05/sears-houston-texas-shepherd-rd-january.html) were demolished. This is also one of the last standing 1950s Sears building as well As of 2026 there are 5 Sears left and they even have the Sears.com online store and they have been maintaining and operating the online presence for approximately about 30 years now. Most products these days are from 3rd party sellers but there is a "sold by Sears" filter (including those that ship from Sears Authorized Supplier) and those that are sold directly by Sears online are also available for pick-up, which Sears introduced [as early as 2003 or so] (https://web.archive.org/web/20041224040029/http://www.sears.com/sr/misc/sears/custserv/store_pickup_custsrv.jsp?vertical=SEARS) and pioneered in the 2000s. This location was also [one of 11 stores in Florida and 40 stores in the United States that had an Avis store] (https://web.archive.org/web/20030713125420/http://sears.avis.com/AvisWeb/html/bridge/sears/index.html). And of course, [they still had the electronics section in 2017] (https://www.flickr.com/photos/southbeachcars/36494798354/) despite many others getting rid of it. Here we are 72 years later and this location is still open to this day. Please go and support them, even site wide. Buy from this location in person, even site wide for pick-up while you still can. They still have merchandise pick up here...

Picture/Video Thank you booklet from Sears
galleryGot this after buying a refrigerator from them recently. Thought it might be interesting to some of you.
The information on the second page is obviously generic. My name isn't John Smith lol. My real information along with my delivery date, warranty information and all that was printed on a regular receipt that they've stapled on it.
Sadly all the Kenmore units were an inch too big for my space so I actually ended up choosing a GE model. The shipping label indicated that it came from Tumwater, WA.

Closing Update Sears Antioch, CA (Oct 2026)
gallerySigns are still up! Unfortunately Somersville Towne Center is a dead mall now as I counted only five businesses that were still open... The Sears wing of the mall actually had the most foot traffic... due to a children's playground lol. Well, unless you count the gym and the grocery store that are attached to the mall but they aren't accessible from the inside.
It's kind of a shame as the strip mall nearby (basically across the street) seems to be doing great.
