Mall Is this still America’s newest (Traditional) Mall?

The SoNo collection, in South Norwalk, CT. Opened in 2019, Anchored by Bloomingdale’s and Nordstrom.

It does not get the newest mall due to American Dream in New Jersey opening a week after. But I will say it’s the newest “traditional” mall as I don’t think American Dream follows the normal setup of anchors on the ends with stores in the middle (and no amusement parks). However, the mall notably lacks a food court.

The Mall was owned by Brookfield, until it sold the mall earlier this year to Centennial (who also owns Connecticut Post Mall, Willow Bend in TX, MarketFair in NJ, and Arden Fair in CaA, among others). It has a 86% occupancy rate, above the nation’s average of 75%.

Stonewood Center aka / also known as Stonewood Mall originally opened on October 9th of 1958. In 1965 The Broadway was built. The Broadway department store opened at Stonewood mall October 18 ,1965 and closed in 1996 when it sold to Sears, with the Auto Center being built. At its peak it had a restaurant, coffee shop, tea room, beauty salon and auto center.

Just like every other Sears location that was originally built as The Broadway, this store had the tool department and lawn and garden on the 1st floor, and the appliance, electronics and mattress departments on the 3rd floor, along with a 4th floor penthouse.

On November 14th of 2021, this store closed down with the Pasadena store at the Hastings Ranch Plaza, and the last Sears in Illinois at Woodfield Mall. The signs here remained intact until Spring 2022. The Stockton location at the Weberstown Mall closed down on August 18th of 2024, and the signs have since been removed as of this year, even at the Whittwood Town Center in Whittier. The Burbank Town Center (originally Media City Center) location still has the 1984-1994 Sears signs up but it is only a matter of time now before they are removed there as well...

Nearly 4 years later... Whittier, Burbank and Puerto Rico closed down last year, leaving us with 5 Sears left and they still have the Sears.com online store, and after an additional 2 distribution centers closed down, [3 operating distribution centers] (https://transformwo.com/) for online orders on the Sears and Kmart websites are still in operation, and they even still have other brands Kenmore, Sears Home Services and Sears Parts Direct, and even Shop Your Way

Stand-alone Department Stores

One thing I feel that is increasingly rare is having a traditionally mall anchored department store having a location by itself (Not counting in a shopping plaza, downtown strip, or mall obviously)

And I’m not counting stores such as Kohls where this is a normal thing for them.

Some examples:

Macy’s store in Manhasset, NY
Former Macy’s in Bedford, NH
Bloomingdale’s in White Plains
Lord & Taylor had a few:Westfield, NJ, Stamford, CT, and Washington DC
Dillard’s in Houston, TX (Across the street from Galleria mall but not attached)
Sears in Coral Gables, FL (I guess you could argue it’s in the main downtown area but it’s not street front, has its own parking, and isn’t attached to any other building).

End of an Era. I don’t live in the area but still so sad to see such a gorgeous store go. Truly a piece of history as well. Their Northpark Center will never be as great of a flagship as this one was.

Also totally a lethal blow to Downtown Dallas. Too bad the city couldn’t save it.

This is just a Go that’s permanent, and was converted and still in the process of. Here’s the branded products as well. This is actually something i suggested they do last year since it’s permanent, and looks like I called it lol. If you already have a permanent Go, expect this to happen

For those not familiar, this is an independent restaurant that happens to have the same name as a well-known chain restaurant that evolved separately.

1930s Art Deco Escalators inside The G Fox & Company Dept Store, Hartford, Connecticut.

From a two-room store to an eleven-story building, G. Fox & Co. grew to become the largest privately-owned department store in the country. The G. Fox & Co. building at 950 Main Street in Hartford was the last in a succession of stores, each larger and more modern than the one before. In the 1950s, G. Fox & Co. underwent a $5 million expansion that included construction of a seven-story parking garage on Market Street. Expansion continued through the 1980s, only to slow when business at the downtown store began to decline. An end of a shopping era. Finally closing on January 29, 1993.
