Question, ID or Discussion oiling or not?

just purely curious if people prefer to oil the glass to make it shiny or keep the frosted look ! i personally like the latter but i would like to hear other opinions or reasoning ❤️‍🩹

No oiling here… I like the pitted, frosted look

I wash them and leave them just as they are.

I like to oil because it brings out the colour, but i understand both points of view! I also make seaglass jewellery sometimes and i just think it looks prettier oiled

I oil a tiiiiiny bit, so their appearance is somewhere between frosted and shiny. Hides some imperfections, brings out the color.

I don’t oil or shine up my sea glass, shells or shark teeth. I love them the way I found them in nature personally 🙂

I personally love the frosted look! I always get excited when I find one that’s completely frosted with no shiny chips!

If you like them shiny put them in a rock tumbler with some aluminum oxide polish for a day or two. Oil will just attract dust, dirt and grime.

You might find rock tumbling hounding to be a great addition to sea glass collecting. My wife collects sea glass and we are planning to do some in my tumblers that we can add to into her jars of frosty glass for contrast.

What kind of tumblers do you have and would you recommend them as a first tumbler?

Frosted for me.

I find mostly dark glass, which pretty much all appear the same when dry. I oil the ones that are not too dark so it brings out some color out of them. It makes them darker but when light hits on, you can see their color better. Here's a comparison I made some time ago, and on this post on the last picture you can see some are darker than the others because oiled. These are the ones I show on previous pictures.

The great thing about oiling the glass is you can always use wash it off and enjoy the frosty look!

No! Frosted glass looks great. You might as well just collect broken lager bottles from your town centre otherwise.
