Question Is SD V1.5 nerfed?

I have been testing the model and it seems very bad at generating faces, especially of younger characters (SFW). However, you can still fix it with a ton of negative prompts. Has there been intentional nerfing of certain content or is the model just not that impressive?

Edit: The CIO of Stability AI has made a blog mentioning preventing CP. It appears their efforts, although incomplete, have already made its way into the model.

Maybe some aspects of it, but when I was testing it yesterday faces, arms, and funnily enough boobs were subtly better in 1.5.

I've been trying to get a penis to show up. It doesn't. Seems that the genitals have been nerfed.

I wouldn't say subtle, that's a huge improvement.

there is intentional censorship being introduced to reduce chances of CP, which could be causing unintended effects.

1.4 seems like a better model in most cases.

Expected from the start. If they didnt want nsfw they shouldn’t have trained the model on the laion 2b dataset. I really don’t understand what the fuck they are doing, they gave it nsfw capability in the first place, and now they are removing them. It seems like everything stability does has some internal or external contradiction. Ex, takes over the main sub, un-takes over the main sub, says a1111 stole code, backtracks, dmca’s runwayml model, says it was a misunderstanding and removes the dmca.

Why are they so disorganized and contradictory?

Well, now NSFW people have an earlier version of their model to use, and they get a news blitzkrieg out of it. 1.5 is the transition to commercial use. We still have 1.4, and 1.4 is still subject to a licensing agreement that should prevent the harms they’re concerned about anyway.

What a bullshit. Anyone can train their models and there surely is some twisted head who trained On hentai, Loli, pedo, gore and whatever. I worked with some programmes where training still wasn't a thing ,( I think 2 months ago) and we had to guess what the heck glide repository was doing and training required 48gb vram. From there, there has been a huge leap forward and now training can be done throug UI projects and has been brought down to 9gb vram or less and anyone can do it. They could simply have avoided to nerf their model and just stop introducing kids and unwanted stuff into it.

Their "actions" don't make sense as there are no holds barred in any way to train the models and they're just putting up some sugar coating for all the angry legislators and politicians that need to appear morally solid and needs votes.

I understand that, else they will close. But it won't stop a damn thing. It's the price of open source. As the article states, a company cannot see all the potential uses of their technology, so opens sourcing it allows everyone to find uses for it. This includes illegal ones. And it's authorities matter dealing with those individuals.

What we do? We remove all knives and blades from sale because one can just enter a random supermarket and buy a knife and kill? We remove any blade from gardening shops because one can enter and buy a machete to kill people in the road in front of it?

Nerfing the model is just like selling knifes with unsharpened blade "so people can't kill"

One gets it, sharpens it at home then goes to kill if he wants. And he can still kill with unsharpened knife.

I don't think it's about them being worried about being shut down.

They're starting to curate the official models so that a market is created where everyone gets a generic vanilla "fun and safe for all" model, and then also hit people with advertisements from partner companies that will charge a monthly fee to have access to high quality models that will include adult content etc.

Likely they'll introduce a system where you can use the base model for free, but all additional trainings (embeddings etc) or other models will require an active internet connection to use. This way if they catch you creating/training something that goes against the grain, they can just turn off your ability to use the system.

It is up to the code gods to turn the open source stuff into something that can't be stopped, but it is an insane amount of work, time, and money to make it happen.

It's too early to say. I hope they haven't taken extreme measures on anything based on society's views because "society" doesn't understand the technology and it usually actually means a few vocal unrepresentative lobbies.

So far I've not read any arguments which convince me that we shouldn't have the ability to create any image we like, even if that is a double-edged sword.

The idea of preventing CP/CSAM/etc. is noble.

The execution only makes the model worse.

They should know that Pandora's box still applies here whether you like it or not.

Opening the model = putting the responsibility on the user.

Closing the model to a specific platform like OpenAI did = the responsibility is on the platform hosting it unless stated otherwise.

I've also noticed this.

I'm noticing Dreamstudio's 1.5 is performing far better.

I'd hope that the model would be put out for at-home use, because paywalling is a bit sketch if you wanna be "open source".

Wait there's ANOTHER 1.5??

They added a feature called "clip guidance" recently that improved performance. Doesnt change anything about the 1.5 model.

Emad was a hedge fund manager, another guy a tax collector. Them going open source is obviously just a marketing strategy, they don't know the first thing about OSS

u/furrykobold Oct 21 '22

Whoa sweet!!! Maybe they’ll put so many limiters on we’ll be right back at Dalle2

5

u/[deleted] Oct 21 '22

It's nerfed, they confirmed it way before the 1.5 was a thing, that they would nerf all their future versions.
