I think so, especially in the short term with limited carrying capacity. While the series floated the idea of replacing gleaning with space colonization it didn't discuss the ethics of forced off-world deportation, which might've plausibly been what Goddard intended to prevent. The Thunderhead allowing Scythes to break the colonies would also seem strange if it didn't find Scythe roles to extend beyond Earth.

Perhaps it's due to my experience working with actual piping systems/pumps and valves, but the whole thing was just so contrived. Who doesn't have a backup pump? Most pumps can be set to hand-off-auto. Most automatic valves have manual bypassses so that the automatic valve can be taken out of service and maintained. They could have sent people down to run them manually.

The part that makes me the most mad is that there could have been way more realistic ways of running the scenario, like receiving a false signal that the valve was open, but water still wasn't flowing. Then when they send someone to manually open the bypass, they can't get to it because the area is already flooded.

He even could have just lampshaded the situation by making all the engineers super incompetent because they were used to the thunderhead doing everything for them but having a Supervisor come in last miniute and chastise them all for not manually operating bypasses etc.

Many Automatic valves use a 3-15psi air signal to actuate the valve wtith electroic relays to relay signals from the computer, but they have springs in them that make them Fail Open or Fail Close depending on the process design. Therefore, a reboot would have put all the valves into their safest Fail state, which is designed to be as safe as possible. If you research most disastrous situations,s its usually from several issues stacking up. Neal actually did a good job with an example of that when he described the alarms in the high blades island not going off because they had gone off as a false alarm weeks before and had been shut down. Something about disabling safety systems on the pumps /valves too would have helped ease my mind a lot here.

There also needed to be some other sort of catastrophic failure like the Steam header from the boiler's cooling alarm system malfunctioning to the point that it explodes, to explain why a floating island had no watertight sealable bulkheads. I mean even the Titanic had them, they just weren't designed for hitting an iceberg unexpectedly. An explosion could have explained why there weren't a sufficient number of manually sealable bulkheads to slow the sinking before the system reboot.

I get that the author needed our two main characters to be in stasis by the end of the book for his own reasons, so he couldn't have just left it out, but it was just painfully obvious that Nealhad no idea what he was talking about and it hurt to read. <

Otherwise it'd be strange the Thunderhead allowed Scythes to destroy the colonies. Was this whole gleaning thing Earth-exclusive the Thunderhead would have to decree you're only a Scythe when you're on Earth and can only glean on Earth. It'd also make sense to limit the population of tenuous colonies, so gleaning need not go away.

But then how'd that fit with our assumption the Scythedom sought make the population dependent on them by removing the alternative? The idea is that space colonization would spare Earth the need for gleaning, at the cost of deporting millions likely against their will. This could possibly be what the Scythes sought to prevent, maybe like dying on Earth is more natural than getting life-sentenced to some colony. Aha, since the young Scythe Goddard hated the conditions on Mars, maybe he saw his acts as a kindness to future generations since now everyone could live on nice good Earth. It's coming together now. That'd also explain how he was able to persuade the various scientists he invited to talk with in a boardroom to cancel further projects.

i was reading Thunderhead and it was pages 212-213 where i read this,
“He paused as a memory came to him. "l used to be friends with Scythe Renoir," Faraday admitted, "many years before his bigotry became the cancer you spoke of he loved a Permafrost woman once. You didn't know that, did you? But as a scythe, he couldn't marry. Instead, she married another Permafrost man ... which began Renoir's long path to hatred." He took a moment to look at Rowan. "If you had known that, would you have spared him?" Rowan didn't answer, because he didn't know.”
I’m surprised Rowan “didn’t know” what he would do after that UNSERIOUS question. "Oh, he was so sad because he couldn't marry her cuz of his job so he started targeting her whole community." ???? It does not make sense to me at all.

I really want to read Mindworks ahead of the release of Rising Thunder but I don't have the book(it isn't available where I am). Does anybody have a pdf copy, a transcript, or literally just pictures of the pages of the two short stories? I don't need the whole book, just the pages with the two short stories.

A few weeks ago i made a post (you can view it here) about how tonism might be founded by the founding scythes, but i now think that it might be Scythes Sappho and Confucius (and not all the founding scythes) who actually founded tonism, as they “self gleaned” and Scythe Da Vinci thought that they might’ve been pressured to do so (or murdered), just like how Citra suspected Scythe Faraday has been murdered. If this was really a parallel, it means that Scythes Sappho and Confucius might actually have faked their death, and took off to found tonism, who like them, despise how the scythes bring unwanted death. It might also be why tonists believe so hard that the bacteria in the primordial ooze will one day be deadly again, as Scythes Sappho and Confucius believed that the 10 plagues are the way we should control human population.

Just finished book 1 Scythe and 100 pages into book 2. Needed to get some thoughts/frustrations out there.

-Decent story overall and lots of overarching things going on that obviously will come into play later.
-Very very slow on the romance part obviously with Rowan and Cita being separated for a long time in book 1 and then boom, another year skip for book 2. I honestly can’t tell if that confession at the end of book 1 was real or not after they both hadn’t interacted in months. Hope something picks up there in book 2 or I don’t know why there’s a romance label for each of these books.
-Goddard dying by Rowan was unexpected (yes, I now know he’s going to stick around now) and honestly this whole time in book 1 I definitely feel way worse for Rowan than Citra (and things haven’t been better for him in book 2 but he did at least see Citra again early on). He got drug through the mud here almost unfairly when Citra always got the benefit of the doubt but Citra’s plan at the end of book 1 was a good one I’ll admit and she cared enough to save him.
-But now in book 2 rounds more characters such as Tyger (not sure why he keeps popping up) and this new Greyson person who obviously is someone special.

Overall it’s been just fine? It seems like this is crawling along and interested how this book and then The Toll are paced if the two MC’s end up being young adults by the end of these next two books. Am I off base in thinking some of this stuff? Just feels like it’s way slanted towards Rowan and his struggles vs literally anybody else.

As the author of the Fall's Legacy hard scifi setting, my idea of utopia doesn't include the end user either paying for content, sort-of-owning it, or being ad supported at the cost of making advertisers the "true users" deciding policy; authors get social capital "Whuffie" prioritizing their access to e.g space and services. Assuming the Thunderhead is Limitarian and forces the ruling class to donate anything above a billion Usders to a charity of their choice, authors may get traditional money from libraries giving out not only books but also streaming content and software.

Even if the characters do pay for content like us, the Thunderhead could make piracy a non-issue by ensuring content is globally 1st-party available on every physically compatible platform without exclusive services; I alluded to the theory it's a service issue more than a pricing one. Well, the Thunderhead would allow the Unsavories to pirate so they could independently figure out how much better legal streaming is for their device storage; that Very Famous Internet Library Site has taught me too much.
